Low pressure across the area with a 990 mb low near the Bering 
Strait and a 981 mb low is near St Matthew Island. The low
pressure will move inland tonight as weak high pressure move into
the area. A strong low that is near Kamchatka will move into the 
Western Bering Sea with a front extending E along 50N Sat 
evening. The low will move NE into the north central Bering Sea 
as the front moves to the Lower Yukon Delta Sat night and into 
the Western Interior by Sun morning, while the low moves into 
Chukotka.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Today should be the last really cold day over the Interior and
North Slope as a series of weather systems move from the Bering
Sea east across Alaska through early next week.

A weather front over the Eastern Bering Sea is causing blizzard
or near blizzard conditions along the West Coast now, that will
spread into the Western Interior and North Slope tonight. Light
snow will then spread to the Central Interior Thu, and over much
of the Eastern Interior Thu night and Fri.

A second storm moving east across the Bering Sea on Fri will
bring 4-8 inches of snow to Southwest Alaska Fri PM into Sat AM,
with 2-4 inches across Northwest AK and the Central Interior Fri
night and Sat, while the Eastern Interior and Fairbanks area will get
light snow Sat and Sat night.

A third, and much stronger and more significant storm, moving
into the Western Bering Sea on Sat will spread blizzard conditions
and heavy snow into the West Coast of AK Sat night, to the
Western Interior and Western North Slope Sun. Snow is expected to
spread into the Eastern Interior Sun night, then becoming heavy on
Mon and continue into Tue. Up to one foot of snow is possible
from the Brooks Range south, and northwest of Delta Junction,
early next week. There is even a chance of mixed or freezing
precipitation southwest of the Bering Strait to Minchumina from
Sat night through Sun.

This third storm will bring southwest gales blowing across the
Bering Sea Sat into Mon, and across the Chukchi Sea Sun into Mon.
This will bring a possibility of coastal flooding along the West
Coast and Western Arctic Coast Sun into Mon. At this time it looks
similar to the storm surge and flooding that occurred along the
West Coast a week and a half ago.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a trough stretching from the
North Pole south over Western Canada, a ridge over the Eastern
Pacific and Mainland Alaska, and a second trough over the NW
Pacific, The Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. This pattern is
becoming progressive as a series of strong short wave troughs make
their way east. The ridge will gradually flatten through the
weekend as a series of strong short wave troughs makes their way
inland. From Sun into next Tue, southwest flow aloft will bring a
series of strong short wave troughs NE over Northern AK before the
ridge rebuilds by the middle of next week. This all means that Nrn
AK is now on a warming trend to be well above normal by the
weekend, and then cooling back down in the second half of next
week. It also means that the West Coast and North Slope will be
very stormy with a series of snowstorms and blizzards, and that
the Interior will see periods of significant snowfall through
early next week.

Surface...
A 972 mb low 200 NM southwest of Gambell will move to near Gambell
as a 990 mb low by 3pm Thu, then move into the southern Chukchi
Sea as a 1003 mb low by 3am Fri, then dissipate near Point Hope
by 3pm Fri. The occluded front associate with this system that
lies from the Gulf of Anadyr to Bristol Bay will move to Point
Hope to Bethel to Bristol Bay by 3am Thu, to Point Lay to McGrath
by 3pm Thu, to Wainwright to Denali by 4am Fri, and then to
Wainwright to Old Crow to Burwash Landing by 3pm Fri. Heavy snow
and SE gales force winds will occur along the front tonight, with
winds decreasing Thu as the front moves inland. East winds along
the Arctic Coast will increase close to gales forecast as the
front moves east and causes the surface gradient to increase, and
will cause low visibility in blowing snow. Snow will move inland
with the front and snowfall amounts will decrease the further east
the front moves. Expect 3-6 inches of snow along the West Coast,
2-4 inches in the Western Interior, and 1-2 inches in the Eastern
Interior with this front through Fri.

A second low will move into the southwest Bering Sea by 3am Fri,
to near St Matthew Island as a 982 mb low by 3pm Fri, and to
Norton Sounds as a 1000 mb low by 3am Sat, then moving east across
the Interior on Sat. This will bring 4-8 inches of snow to
Southwest Alaska Fri PM into Sat AM, with 2-4 inches across
Northwest AK and the Central Interior Fri night and Sat, while the
Eastern Interior and Fairbanks area will get light snow Sat and
Sat night.

A third and very strong low will move into the southwest Bering
Sea on Sat, to the Northern Bering Sea on Sun, and to north of
Utqiagvik on Mon. This will spread blizzard conditions
and heavy snow into the West Coast of AK Sat night, to the
Western Interior and Western North Slope Sun. Snow is expected to
spread into the Eastern Interior Sun night, then becoming heavy on
Mon and continue into Tue. Up to one foot of snow is possible
from the Brooks Range south, and northwest of Delta Junction,
early next week. There is even a chance of mixed or freezing
precipitation southwest of the Bering Strait to Minchumina from
Sat night through Sun. This third storm will bring southwest
gales blowing across the Bering Sea Sat into Mon, and across the
Chukchi Sea Sun into Mon.

.DISCUSSION...
Models verify well aloft at 12Z, and show similar solutions aloft
through Sat. Models maintain similar patterns aloft into early
next week, but start to see differences in timing, strength and
location of short wave troughs from Sat night into next week.

With precipitation, the ECMF is about 6 hours faster than the NAM
and GFS moving precip east starting from right now. Since the ECMF
is too fast from the get go, favor the NAM and GFS with precip.

At the surface at 15Z, models verify well on most features but all
are 5-7 mb too weak on the low in the Western Bering Sea. Since
this increases the gradient across all of Northern Alaska, will
bump up model winds 3-5kt over the Bering Sea and West Coast
through Thu to account for this, and 3-5kt over the North Slope
and easterly drainage areas of the Interior (such as Delta and
Eagle) through Thu.

Bottom line for models is that we will use a blend of the NAM and

clouds. Will use a blend of the GFS and NAM for winds, but bump up
winds 3-5kt over the Bering Sea and West Coast through Thu, and
up the winds 3-5kt over the North Slope and easterly drainage
areas of the Interior (such as Delta and Eagle) through Thu.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
This third storm will bring southwest gales blowing across the
Bering Sea Sat into Mon, and across the Chukchi Sea Sun into Mon.
This will bring a chance of coastal flooding along the West Coast
and Western Arctic Coast Sun into Mon. At this time it looks
similar to the flooding that occurred along the West Coast a week
and a half ago.

...Significant Snowfall Possible Early Next Week...

Heavy snowfall is possible Sunday night into Tuesday across the
Central and Eastern Interior, including Fairbanks. This weather system
also has the potential to bring gusty winds to the area, along
with freezing rain.

There is still a lot of uncertainty with the exact details of this
