Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Very cold temperatures across northern Alaska will begin to
moderate somewhat south of the Brooks Range through Thursday as
clouds and chances for snow move through the area. Cold
temperatures will settle back into the Interior by Friday.
Attention will transition to the West Coast on Thursday as a
strong surface low pressure system will bring increasing southerly
flow and snow through Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
Troughing aloft and general low pressure at the surface remains
anchored over northern Alaska this afternoon. The trough aloft
will rotate more into a north to south orientation tonight, with a
shortwave trough lifting north of the Alaska Range Tuesday night.
This trough will bring increasing chances for snow across the
Interior tomorrow afternoon and lasting into Wednesday evening.
This trough will then begin to slide east going into Thursday as
strong ridging builds across the West Coast. Northerly flow will
develop across the state, ushering in colder temperatures again
going into the end of the week. Models remain in good agreement
going into Friday.

Looking further, a strong closed low with an associated
shortwave, will quickly move into the Bering Sea on Friday. This
feature will continue to be monitored as strong southerly flow with
widespread snow would develop across the West Coast with this
pattern.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Bitter cold temperatures across the area will warm south of the
Brooks Range tonight, as clouds move in from the south and linger
over the next couple of days. Chances for snow will increase from
Lake Minchumina east starting Tuesday night as a weather front
lifts north of the Alaska Range. This front will continue to move
north and reach the eastern Brooks Range by Wednesday evening.
Despite this warming trend, temperatures are still expected to
remain well below normal, with another round of 30s and 40s below
possible by the weekend as skies clear out.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Extensive cold temperatures continuing along the Arctic Coast and
the Brooks Range through the short term. Wind conditions will
remain calm east of Utqiagvik, with northeast winds to 10 to 20
mph from Utqiagvik west. Wind chills along the northwest Arctic
Coast near Point Lay will also be an issue as temperatures will
remain in the 20s to 30s below zero tonight and through tomorrow.
Temperatures will continue to remain in the 20s to 30s below along
the Arctic Coast, with 40s below along the Plains going into
Friday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cold and calm conditions continuing along the West Coast and
Western Interior for the beginning of the week. From Norton Sound
south. A slow warming trend will occur over the next several days,
but will remain well below normal. A transition will occur on
Thursday, as strong southerly flow develops Thursday night. A
weather front associated with this storm will move to the West
Coast by Friday, with snow developing. Details remain limited at
this time, but active weather expected going into late week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Model guidance is
indicating strong southeast to southwest winds developing across
the West Coast Thursday night and into Saturday morning,
increasing potential for recently formed sea ice breaking and
piling on beaches for areas such as Scammon Bay.

Extended Days 4 to 7...The quiet weather pattern that has
dominated over northern Alaska looks to transition to more active
going into Thursday and beyond, particularly for the West Coast.
Strong southerly flow developing on Thursday along the West Coast
would bring warmer temperatures along with snow as the weather
front pushes inland. After this first weather system, certainty
remains good for the pattern to remain active going through the
weekend. However, certainty remains low on what areas could
continue to be impacted, particularly the West Coast.
