A 996 mb low near Cape Lisburne will move to 100 NM north of Cape
Lisburne as a 1010 mb low by 3am Wed, then weaken. A weather front 
over the Eastern Bering Sea will move over SW Alaska tonight and 
then move inland and dissipate on Wed. A strong storm south of 
Adak will move into the southern Bering Sea by 3pm Wed, to the 
Bering Strait as a 989 mb low by 3pm Thu, and to near Wrangel 
Island as a 1003 mb low by 3pm Fri.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet conditions continuing across northern Alaska this morning.
Main weather of note is persistent strong north to northeast winds
gusting to 50 mph along the northwest Arctic Coast at Point Hope
and winds beginning to increase through Alaska Range passes. A
pattern change is expected to occur in the Monday to Tuesday time
frame, resulting in increasing potential for mixed precipitation
and then snow for Fairbanks...stay tuned for updates to the
forecast as this event approaches.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level pattern consists of a persistent longwave trough
extending from Siberia southeast into the Gulf of Alaska. Ridging
across the heart of Alaska will weaken with time, as a strong
closed low will strengthen in the northern Pacific and move north
into the Gulf of Alaska by Monday morning. This will lead to
strong southerly flow across the Interior portions of the state
through Monday night as the closed low moves north over the Alaska
Range. As this closed continues to move north, flow will become
more southwesterly across the state going into Tuesday evening.

At 850 mb, warmer temperatures anywhere from 0C to -6C will
generally persist across most of the state through the short term.
Colder temperatures look to momentarily settle across the
Interior on Tuesday before another push of warm air occurs on
Wednesday, potentially bringing above 0C air north of the Brooks
Range later in the week.

At the surface, low pressure moving north into Bristol Bay will
spread widespread snow across the West Coast and Western Interior
today. A stronger surface low will move into the Gulf of Alaska
by Monday morning, bringing potential for more snow, including
portions of the Interior as the front reaches north of the Alaska
Range by Monday evening. As surface low pressure moves into the
Interior, chances will increase for snow in Fairbanks on Monday
night and into Tuesday.

Eastern and Central Interior...
The main weather concern for today is gap winds in the Alaska
Range, as southerly winds gusting to 65 mph will develop this
morning and persist into tomorrow morning. The next situation
being monitored is the potential for mixed precipitation
beginning Monday night for portions of the Interior, including the
Fairbanks area, before transitioning to snow Tuesday morning and
lasting through Tuesday night. With this surge of warm air from
the south, temperatures are expected to remain well above the
climatological norm through the middle of the week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low stratus is currently affecting portions of the central and
western Arctic Coast, with clear areas well into the 20s below
this morning. Easterly flow across the North Slope is expected to
continue through the short term. Conditions remaining relatively
quiet, with the exception of increasing chances for snow along the
northwest Arctic Coast for tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to
generally warm in this region over the next several days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Strong winds continuing across the West Coast this morning, with
Point Hope observing wind gusts to 50 mph. Winds are expected to
gradually decrease through today. Increasing chances for snow is
expected to spread north across most areas of the West Coast and
Western Interior beginning today, with at least a chance for snow
persisting into the middle of the week. Temperatures are expected
to remain near to slightly above what is normal for this time of
year through Tuesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Days 4 to 7...The longwave pattern over the Bering Sea
will send another shortwave trough across the West Coast and into
the Interior beginning Wednesday morning. This feature will bring
another chance for snow for areas of the Interior through
Wednesday night.

The active pattern looks to continue with another strong surface
low pressure system behind the event on Wednesday, set to impact
the West Coast beginning Wednesday night. Details such as
low/frontal placement and extent/magnitude of warming with this
system remains to be seen, but there are hints of mixed
precipitation possible going into Friday with this feature.
