Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow and flurries over the Central and Eastern Interior
will continue to diminish tonight with low wind chill values
through the Alaska Range Passes improving as winds diminish late
tonight and into tomorrow morning. Blowing snow and low wind chill
values will continue over the interior highway summits into
tomorrow. Snow and wind will increase rapidly tomorrow afternoon
over the eastern Arctic with Blizzard conditions developing near
Kaktovik and low visibilities in blowing snow developing near
Prudhoe Bay.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...The 17/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis as well as the 12z upper air observations and
verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model spread
remain minimal in the short range and well into the mid range on
synoptic scale feature position, track and strength. Extended
range forecasts are in relatively good agreement with Rex Block
type of pattern developing.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...High pressure will continue to
build over the western and central portions of the North Slope
while a front dives south out of the Beaufort Sea over the eastern
portion of the north slope on Thursday. A blizzard warning has
been issued for areas east of Deadhorse as strong winds and
blowing snow are expected to produce difficult travel conditions
in the area. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the
Prudhoe Bay area as well as the Eastern Brooks Range for Blowing
Snow and cold Wind Chill into Friday morning. West winds will
increase Thursday as the next front moves to the coast with west
winds 30 to 40 mph east of Deadhorse. Highs in the single digits
above and below. Lows will be 5 to 15 below along the coast, and
falling to around 20 below in the Brooks Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...Generally clear skies again
tonight in the coastal areas, and the Western Interior will also
be mostly clear. Winds north 10 to 20 mph along the coast with the
strongest winds on the Capes and St Lawrence Island. Inland winds
generally becoming northeast to 10 mph, but locally winds gusting
to 25 mph. Highs will range from the 20s above on St Lawrence
Island, to the teens above in the Yukon Delta and on the Capes, to
the teens below inland. Lows will be around 20s above on St
Lawrence Island, to the single digits above and below along the
coast to the 20s below inland.

Central and Eastern Interior...A low pressure system in the gulf
continues to push light snow into the Southeast and Central Interior.
Light snow accumulations are expected mainly east of Tanana and
south of the Yukon River through this evening. Snowfall amounts
generally less than 2 inches with the heaviest amounts around
Circle Hot Springs and along the AlCan Border. Snow will diminish
this evening in Fairbanks with generally less than one half inch
of accumulation. Northeast winds continue to increase this
afternoon and will continue tonight especially over the hills
above treeline where blowing and drifting snow may impact travel.
Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for areas north of
Fairbanks for blowing snow and low wind chill values over highway
summits.  Winds in the valleys will be mainly northeast to 10 mph
today. Temperatures continue to be moderated by the cloudy cover
south of the Yukon River. Highs in the single digits above to
around 20 below north of the Yukon River. Lows will be 5 below to
the 30s below with the coldest temperatures in the Upper Koyukuk
Valley.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Temperatures will continue to
be troublesome as upper level temperatures over the interior rise,
but will be counteracted by clearing skies as a ridge builds in
from the west. Sharp inversions are likely to develop over
interior valleys as temperatures warm aloft but clear skies and
light winds allow for optimal radiational cooling in the valleys.
The Interior will be mostly clear and dry through the weekend,
then increasing clouds from the southeast as a weather front
associated with a low in the gulf moves into the Southeast
Interior with increasing chances of snow. A trough of low pressure
will persist over the Central and Eastern Arctic Coast with
stratus and flurries or light snow, but no significant
accumulation. Partly cloudy with some snow showers possible on the
West Coast, but no major systems moving into the area.
