Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.SYNOPSIS...
Persistent pattern of southerly flow across the Interior,
northerly flow along the West Coast and easterly flow along the
North Slope will continue through the short term. This will result
in periods of lowered visibilities in fog, snow and/or blowing
snow along the North Slope, with increasing southerly gap winds
through Alaska Range passes and a moderately strong Tanana Valley
Jet through the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
In the upper levels, a longwave trough stretches from Siberia into
the Gulf of Alaska, with a ridge pushing into the Interior of
Alaska this morning. Troughing will remain along the West Coast,
with a strong shortwave trough reinforcing troughing in the Gulf
of Alaska by Monday morning. This feature will help to weaken the
ridging over the Interior, resulting in southerly flow going into
Monday evening. This active pattern is expected to continue going
into the middle of next week as troughing continues to dominate
the Bering Sea.

At 850 mb, temperatures in the -8C to -15C range in the Interior
will give way to warmer temperatures as southerly flow develops
over the weekend. Temperatures pushing 0C will move into the
Interior north of the Alaska Range Sunday, keeping warm conditions
across the state going into next week.

At the surface, strong high pressure in the Arctic will keep
easterly flow across the North Slope over the next several days.
Stronger winds off the northwest Arctic Coast will continue
through the weekend as low pressure persists in Kotzebue Sound and
more broadly across the West Coast and the Western Interior. This
pattern will persist, as a number of strong surface lows will
continue to impact areas in and around the Gulf of Alaska going
into next week. Leeside troughing north of the Alaska Range will
develop with each low pressure coming ashore in the Gulf of
Alaska, leading to the development of southerly gap flow and the
Tanana Valley Jet periodically through the short term.

Eastern and Central Interior...
Areas of stratus confined to the Yukon Flats and the Upper Koyukuk
Valley this morning, with clear conditions anywhere south and
east of these areas. Little to no threat of snow through the
short term, as chinook conditions develop and persist through the
weekend. As southerly flow develops, expect gusty gap winds to
develop tomorrow evening. Expect temperatures to remain well above
what is average for this time of the year going into next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Areas of reduced visibility due to snow, blowing snow, and fog
expected for areas Deadhorse east, with more frequent issues for
Utqiagvik east through this afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory
is in effect for the western Arctic Coast as snow and blowing snow
is reducing visibility to a half mile or less at times. Total snow
accumulations up to an inch are expected along the North Slope
through tonight. Easterly flow is expected to subside tonight,
leading to improving conditions. Temperatures along the coast are
expected to remain above average through the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Northerly flow along the West Coast will persist through the
weekend with little to no impact. Stratus encompasses most of the
region this morning. Quiet conditions continuing through today,
with increasing chances for snow tomorrow. Temperatures remaining
well above the climatological norm through the weekend.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...An active upper level pattern will
continue, with west to southwest flow developing on Tuesday,
increasing potential for snow to spread across the forecast area
going into the middle of the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
