A 996 mb low over the Seward Peninsula will move to the Bering 
Strait as a 999 mb low tonight. A weather front extending from 
this low east along the Brooks Range will continue to move north 
over the North Slope of Alaska this morning, then slowly weaken 
in place through through Fri.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Frontal systems merging over the Western and Northern Interior
will weaken in place through Thursday and will produce wetting
rains over much of the Western Interior with an additional 0.25 to
as much as 1.00 inches expected with the heaviest rain expected
just east of the Nulato Hills and in the southwest Brooks Range. A
front moving into the southeastern Interior and Eastern Interior
tonight and Thursday will bring wetting rains to much of the
Eastern Interior south of the Yukon River. Rainfall totals in the
Fortymile and Eastern Alaska Range are expected to be in the 0.50
to 1.00 range. Will need to monitor steep terrain and small
streams with rapid meltoff of snow with the rain below 5000 to
6000 feet. Mostly cloudy with a slight warming trend is expected
on the North Slope while with seasonal conditions expected on the
West Coast.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
Aloft at 500 mb, broad troughing continues over Siberia and Alaska
with a 522 dam anchoring low currently positioned over the Bering
Strait will continue to wobble around for the next several days.
A series of shortwaves will push north and west out of the Gulf of
Alaska over the next couple days and will stall over the Canadian
Border and Southeast Alaska. An upper level low will form both at
700 mb and 850 mb near Beaver in the Yukon Territory and will
produce north to northeast winds as well as lifting aloft to the
Fortymile Country and in particular the Eastern Alaska Range
Thursday and Friday. Storm total rainfall is expected to be
between 0.50 to 1.25 inches in these areas. Freezing levels are
expected to rise to over 5000 feet in the Eastern Alaska Range on
Thursday and Friday and will add additional runoff into the small
streams in the steep terrain of the Eastern Alaska Range. Expect
river levels to rise in most areas of the Eastern Interior with
the rainfall however river levels are currently low and will
accommodate significant runoff.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Unsettled weather is expected to continue over the Central and
Eastern Interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms in the
Central Interior and numerous showers heavy at times, developing
Thursday and Friday and isolated thunderstorms continuing in the
afternoon and evenings. Rivers in the Southeast Interior will see
sharp rises late this week with the incoming heavy showers Thu
and Fri bringing .50-1.00 inch of rain. Freezing levels are
expected to rise to over 5000 ft in these areas and will help
produce additional snow melt runoff with the heavy rain. Will need
to closely small streams in in the steep terrain of the Eastern
Alaska Range for rapid rises.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Frontal systems merging over Western and Northwestern Interior as
well as the Western Brooks Range will continue to produce heavy
rain tonight and into Thursday with an additional 0.25 to 1.00
inches of rain expected. Expect sharp rises in water level on
secondary rivers and some rises on main stem rivers over the next
couple of days with the rainfall. Temperatures are expected to be
near or slightly above normal over the next several days. Down
slope flow off of the Nulato Hills will limit precipitation over
the West Coast to the south of the Seward Peninsula.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
High pressure pushing south and east to the north of the North
Slope will continue to produce low ceilings, fog and flurries
over mush of the Arctic Coast into Friday. A frontal system over
the Western Brooks Range will continue to produce light snow at
elevations above 2000 feet tonight and into Thursday with rain
and snow expected in the lower elevations. Temperatures are
expected to remain near of slightly above normal into the
weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Isolated PM thunderstorms this afternoon southeast of Central to
Ambler to Anvik. Isolated PM thunderstorms Thu southeast of
Central to Tanana to Minchumina. Isolated PM thunderstorms Fri
southeast of Eagle to Ft Yukon to Minchumina. Expect Min RH 25-40%
across the Interior today through Fri. Wetting rains are expected
to continue in the Western Interior Today and will develop tonight
and continue into Thursday in the Eastern Interior south of the
Yukon River as well as the Eastern Alaska Range.

.HYDROLOGY...
Break up is occuring on North Slope rivers with ice jams near the
Coast. People near the Arctic Coast should be alert for possible
ice jams on area rivers.

The Western Interior rivers will see sharp rises this week with
0.50-1.00 inch of rain falling there through Thursday morning.
This is on top of the 0.25 - 0.50 inch of rain that has already
fallen there.

Southeast Interior rivers in zones 224 and 226 will see sharp
rises late this week with the incoming heavy showers Thu and Fri
bringing .50-1.00 inch of rain. Freezing levels are expected to
rise to over 5000 ft in these areas and will help produce
additional snow melt runoff with the heavy rain. Will need to
closely small streams in in the steep terrain of the Eastern
Alaska Range for rapid rises.

...Heavy Rain Possible Tonight Through Friday in the Eastern
Alaska Range and Fortymile Country and Deltana Flats...

A storm system moving into Southeastern Alaska later tonight is
expected to bring heavy rain to the Deltana and Tanana Flats area
to the east of Delta Junction, to the Fortymile Country as well
as the Eastern Alaska Range beginning late tonight and continuing
into Friday. 0.25 to over 1.00 inches of rain is expected in these
areas with the heaviest rain expected in the Eastern Alaska
Range. Be on the alert for rises on small rivers in the Deltana
and Tanana Flats area to the east of Delta Junction and the
Fortymile Country beginning tonight and continuing into Friday.

In the Eastern Alaska Range, the heavy rain combined with
freezing levels around 5000 feet will produce both snowmelt runoff
as well as rainfall runoff and may produce rapid rises on small
rivers especially in the steep terrain in the Eastern Alaska Range
beginning tonight and continuing into Friday.

...Significant Rain Over Western Interior Through Tonight...

Rain continues to fall over much of the Western Interior of
Alaska this afternoon. The Western Interior is expecting another
0.25 to 0.50 inches of rain through tonight with the heaviest
rainfall expected to fall in along the southern slopes of the
Western Brooks Range. This will lead to sharp rises on rivers in
the Western Interior later this week.
