An area of high pressure 400 NM north west of Wrangel Island will
slowly push south and east through Tuesday. A trough of low 
pressure will develop over the southern Interior and continue into
Tuesday.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
After the cold, windy and in some cases rainy and snowy weather
of the last couple days over Northern Alaska, a return to near
normal temperatures and drying out begins this evening and will
continue into early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
A unseasonably cold 528 dam 500 hpa trough continues to dominate
the the upper level pattern over the Mainland. The upper level
center continues to track southwest over Norton Sound. The
frontal zone which is supplied the cold air and produced rain and
snow over the Alaska Range and Fortymile Country will continue to
push north and west as southerly flow develops over Northern
Alaska south of the Brooks Range. A moderate northeast gradient
persists over the Northern Interior as a 1027 mb surface high
near Wrangel Island and a large Aleutian low continue to produce a
strong gradient over the Northern Interior and West Coast. The
winds are expected to diminish over the Northern Interior this
evening as the Eastern Aleutian Low weakens.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow and mixed rain this afternoon over the Eastern AK Range,
Fortymile Uplands and Denali area continues to diminish this
afternoon and will end this evening as the upper level flow
changes to southerly this later this evening and overnight,
bringing warmer air into the region. Another chilly night tonight
especially in sheltered locations and normal cold spots over the
Interior. Drying and warming commences over the Interior Sunday
and Monday with only a few isolated mountain showers through
Monday. More clouds and increased showers chances redevelop Monday
night and Tue. No thunderstorm activity is expected through
Monday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday afternoon
along the ALCAN and Fortymile Country.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cooler and breezy winds from the northeast continue to diminish
this evening as the gradient finally falls apart tonight inland,
although it will continue to blow along the Capes over the Bering
Strait. Some light showers will cross over the Lower Yukon and
Delta into Norton Sound this evening through Sunday. Warming and
drying trend Sunday through Tuesday with only some isolated
showers in the afternoon.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Relatively normal and quiet weather along the North Slope with
periods of stratus and fog as the pressure gradient really weakens
the next day and a half. A weak trough of low pressure will bring
some breezy northeast winds along the western Arctic Coast Sun
night through Mon. A trough will dig into the North Slope on Mon
night bringing increased shower chances over the Brooks Range and
eastern Arctic.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Beginning the extended period forecast on Wednesday, there will
be an upper level trough situated over Western Alaska and an
upper level Ridge over Eastern Alaska and the Yukon. A weak
thermal trough will be over the Fortymile Uplands to the Upper
Kusko Valley north of the AK Range. The models generally reflect a
similar pattern but with differing solutions, but the general
idea of a series of shortwaves lifting north of the AK Range into
the Interior from the GUlf looks to occur, thus expect more
cloudiness and threats for showers/thunderstorms Tue and Wed.
Thereafter, the pattern does not change a ton, but it gets rather
"messy" as the aforementioned troughs rotate around each other and
convective lows form over the Interior. In general expect avg
season temps and weather with threats for showers and
thunderstorms to continue through the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Winds will continue to diminish over the Central and Western
Interior as well as along the West Coast this evening and early
tonight. Rain and snow will currently over the Fortymile Country,
the Upper Tanana Valley, and the Eastern Alaska Range will
diminish later this evening and early tonight. A few stray
showers are possible, however, over higher terrain through
Tuesday. Min RH values will remain in the 20s to low 30s into next
week. Increased threats for some isolated thunder move back into
the forecast for the Eastern Interior Tuesday and Wednesday.

.HYDROLOGY...
No major hydro concerns as breakup continues over the North Slope
with some ice jams continuing to cause minor issues but no
reported flooding. Rivers remain low elsewhere with no major
concerns.
