Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A pattern change is beginning to take shape across the West Coast
of Alaska and will progress eastward over the next couple days.
Cool and showery weather over much of the forecast area will
gradually be shunted eastward as high pressure builds over the
Bering Sea and West Coast tonight and Sunday. Conditions will
trend warmer and drier as the ridge pushes into mainland Alaska
and persists into next week. Shower activity will be generally
limited to the eastern portion of the state next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialized well and are in fairly good agreement with the
movement of large scale synoptic features in the short term.
The current cloudy and moist weather is associcated with an upper
level low complex extending from the Chukchi Sea, to a closed low
centered over the western Interior, to another low over the
northeast Gulf of Alaska. All models are in a consesus with
building high pressure over western Alaska and pushing the Chucki
Sea low east across the Arctic early next week. Meanwhile the
closed upper low over the Interior will be pushed south into the
gulf of Alaska. High pressure will remain anchored over the
western half of the state with a series of upper level troughs
dropping southward along the Alcan border resulting in a better
chance for showers over the eastern Interior and eastern Arctic.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Mainly cloudy, cool, and showery weather will shift east tonight
and Sunday with breaks in the clouds developing from west to east.
Temperatures will cool into the 30s tonight with some light frost
possible if skies clear for a few hours. Temperatures will
gradually warm through Tuesday with highs pushing well into 60s in
most areas. Any showery activity Monday and Tuesday, including
some isolated thunderstorms, will be limited the upper Tanana
Valley and Fortymile Country.

For Denali, very strong north winds 50 to 60 mph will develop
above 17 thousand feet on the Mountain this evening and persist
through Sunday. North winds will diminish some Monday, but
moderate north winds will persist into early next week and result
in poor climbing conditions.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Cool and showery weather is also the rule from the Brooks Range
north to the Arctic Coast today and tonight. Accumulating snowfall
tonight and early Sunday will be generally limited to the Brooks
Range where the Atigun Pass could pick up 1 to 2 inches of new
snow. Showers will taper off from west to east through Sunday
with clearing conditions warming temperatures by Tuesday. Winds
will shift from east to west across the region tonight with gusty
westerly winds on the Chukchi Sea coast on Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
After a morning with some rain and snow showers reported, low
stratus is expected to persist especially along the coast tonight,
with clearing skies over the region on Sunday. Temperatures will
also gradually warm to above normal readings in most areas
through Tuesday. Dry conditions are also expected with the only
real chance of rain remaining south of St. Lawrence Island.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...
Ensemble models are in fair agreement on the upper level ridge
over Northern Alaska gradually breaking down by the end of next
week. So, expect continued near to above normal temperatures and
some chances for precipitation across Northern Alaska towards the
end of next week.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Quiet for the remainder of of today and tomorrow with some
clouds, showers, and cooler temperatures resulting in high
relative humidity values. Warming temperatures and drying
conditions will be developing over the next few days. There is a
chance of an isolated thunderstorm along the Alcan border area
later today but the best chances will be on Tuesday in the upper
Tanana Valley and Fortymile country.

.HYDROLOGY...
There are no concerns at this time. South of the Brooks Range,
most rivers are open with a few north of the Yukon River reporting
residual ice running downriver. There is still some in place ice
at the mouth of rivers draining into Kotzebue Sound. Othwerwise
north of the Brooks Range, rivers remain frozen. Go to
