Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 208 PM AKST Thu Jan 14 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska will move northward over the next 24 hours into southwest Alaska, as high pressure dominates the Arctic. This will bring chances for snow and also increase winds across northern Alaska. A weakening weather front rotating around the Gulf low will move north across the Alaska Range tonight and Friday bringing some light snow to the Interior. This front will push north to Brooks Range and Arctic coast Friday night to Saturday. Increasing winds over Interior summits will result in areas of reduced visibility in blowing snow along the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton highways. Northerly winds will also increase with areas of blowing snow developing along the eastern Arctic Coast and in the Bering Strait. Meanwhile, north winds currently gusting over 50 mph along the northwest Arctic coast will continue to bring low visibility in blowing snow at Point Lay. Gusty south winds are expected to develop through Alaska Range passes on Friday. && .DISCUSSION... Models are in good agreement with the large scale synoptic features over northern Alaska the next several days. There is some uncertainly with snowfall totals and exact area of coverage from the eastern Interior the Arctic coast tonight through Saturday. The NAM model shows the higher probability of snow, but based on model performance recently with the difficulty of bringing snowfall into the Interior, we are leaning toward the slightly drier forecast model solutions. There are also some discrepancies with wind speeds, especially along Arctic coast beginning tonight. We blended models toward slightly stronger Canadian and NAM model solution tonight and into Saturday. Central and Eastern Interior... As the pressure gradient tightens up across the Interior, northeast winds gusting to 35 mph will develop over highway summits along the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton highways. Due to a recent snowfall over these areas, winter weather advisories for blowing snow are in effect beginning this afternoon and continuing into Friday. Southerly Alaska Range winds will also increase with gusts over 50 mph and a wind advisory is in effect starting Friday afternoon south of Delta Junction. A weakening weather front will spread light snow to the upper Tanana Valley and Fortymile country tonight, with snowfall amounts from 1 to 2 inches possible. The front will continue northwest on Friday bringing chances for snow from Fairbanks north to the Brooks Range. Amounts will be light, with an inch or less expected, and likely only a few flurries or dusting in Fairbanks. A very strong temperature inversion in the central Interior will weaken as clouds and winds increase. West Coast and Western Interior... Some light snow will push northwest Friday afternoon through Saturday with the snow mainly falling from Galena and the Seward Peninsula northward to the Brooks Range. Snowfall will be showery and with less than one half inch of snow expected at this time. Winter weather advisories for low visibilities in blowing snow are in effect for Point Hope, Wales, Teller, and Brevig Mission. North Slope and Brooks Range... Winds gusting over 40 mph and very low visibility in blowing snow at Point Lay are expected to continue into Friday, with the worst conditions from this afternoon and into this evening. The winter weather advisory therefore continues into Friday afternoon for Point Lay. Elsewhere, patchy fog and flurries will give way to increasing easterly winds along the coast, especially from Utqiagvik to Barter Island on Friday. A weather front approaching from the south will bring some light snow to Brooks Range Friday night and the Arctic coast on Saturday. Winds along the coast will be diminishing by the time the snow arrives, so at this time we are not anticipating significant impacts from falling and blowing snow from Utqiagvik east. Extended Forecast Days 4-7... Low pressure over the Bering Sea will bring on and off south to southwest flow to north Alaska. Several weather fronts rotating around the low will move into mainland Alaska will result in better chances for some snow next week, especially along the west coast and Interior.
