Area forecast discussion, May 5, 3:03 PM AKDT, 12 minutes before
Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Fairbanks AK
303 PM AKDT Wed May 5 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Shower activity across the Interior continues today, with
the first isolated thunderstorm possibility of the season
generally from Eagle to Northway this afternoon. Conditions look
to become more stable tomorrow, with east to northeast winds
developing across the Interior. Quiet conditions for the West
Coast, while marine layer stratus and fog continuing for the North
Slope with easterly flow ramping up by tomorrow night.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft, ridging is currently in place across the state, with
troughing in the Gulf of Alaska and extending west into the Bering
Sea. A weak shortwave trough north of the Alaska Range is
weakening the ridge slightly this afternoon, allowing for
convection across the Interior. These features will remain
mostly in place through tomorrow morning, before the closed low in
the Gulf of Alaska sends a piece of energy to the northwest across
the Western Interior and the West Coast by Friday afternoon. This
feature will work to weaken the ridge as the shortwave will
continue to move north.

At the surface, high pressure will remain anchored near the Arctic
Coast through the short term, keeping easterly flow across the
North Slope. A couple of surface lows in the Bering Sea and Gulf
of Alaska will remain south of the Alaska Range over the next
couple of days. However, the surface low in the Gulf of Alaska
will move north offshore of the panhandle, resulting in a
tightening pressure gradient as this feature works
in tandem with the surface high off the Arctic Coast. This will
result in increasing east to northeast winds across the Interior
and North Slope beginning tomorrow and lasting into Friday
evening. A weather front associated with this surface low will
move north of the Alaska Range on Friday bringing increasing
chances for showers across the Interior.

Instability parameters like CAPE (100-200 J/kg) and mid-level
lapse rates (~8 C/km) indicate the possibility for isolated
thunderstorm activity this afternoon along the ALCAN border from
Eagle to Northway. Conditions will be more stable tomorrow with
isolated shower activity. As the weather front moves north of the
Alaska Range on Friday, more unstable conditions are possible with
isolated thunderstorms north of the Alaska Range and south of
Fairbanks.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Scattered showers are expected across the Interior this afternoon
and into the evening, with isolated thunderstorms possible from
Eagle to Northway. Conditions will stabilize tomorrow ahead of a
weather front that will increase chances for showers and isolated
thunderstorms in the Middle Tanana Valley south of Fairbanks on
Friday. East to northeast winds will be increasing tomorrow
morning, with gusts up to 35 mph in higher terrain tomorrow
night. Temperatures will remain above normal going into the
weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low stratus and fog continue across the Arctic Coast today. These
conditions are expected to persist as easterly flow continues.
These winds will increase tomorrow to 15-25 mph, particularly for
the western Arctic Coast. Temperatures will remain near normal for
the next several days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Calm and mostly clear conditions once again for the West Coast
this afternoon. Scattered showers are expected for portions of the
Western Interior going into this evening. Chances for showers will
be lower for the Western Interior for tomorrow before higher
chances again on Friday. Temperatures will be trending warmer
going into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Isolated thunderstorms are forecasted for this afternoon and
evening along the ALCAN border from Eagle to Northway. After more
stable conditions tomorrow, isolated thunderstorms are again
possible for areas of the Tanana Valley south of Fairbanks on
Friday. A drying trend is expected for the Interior going into
the weekend, with Friday being in the 25-40 percent RH range,
while strong winds will develop tomorrow with gusts to 35 mph and
last into Friday. Despite these conditions, no fire weather
concerns are expected since temperatures will remain in the 60s
for highs going into the weekend.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydro concerns at this time as the Yukon River remains ice
covered, while the smaller rivers and tributaries across the
Interior continue to breakup nicely. As breakup continues, river
conditions can change rapidly, so stay tuned for the latest
updates and forecasts at www.weather.gov/afg, mobile.weather.gov,
or www.weather.gov/aprfc.
