Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure aloft over Northern Alaska will persist into
Sun and then slowly weaken next week. This will cause very warm
and generally dry weather over most of Northern Alaska through
Sun.

A weather front in SW Alaska will bring a chance of light
snow/rain to the Yukon Delta and St Lawrence Is/Bering Strait area
tonight and Sun.

A cold front NE of Alaska will move southeast over the North
Slope and Yukon Territory tonight and Sun, and then move east
over the Eastern Interior on Mon and into the Wrn Interior on Tue.
This will cause high temperatures to fall 10-15F across the
Interior from Sun into Tue, with temps near normal values by Tue.
Will see east winds increase to 25-35 mph over the Arctic Coast
from Utqiagvik east from Sun PM into Mon behind the cold front
which may cause blowing snow from Deadhorse east. Will see NE
winds 10-20kt over most of the Ern INterior Mon and Tue behind the
front, with gusts 25 kt in channeled areas such as Finger Mtn and
Eagle Summit.

Near Seasonal temperatures will persist from Wed through next
weekend over most of Nrn Alaska.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of an omega block over Alaska with
a strong 5630 meter 500 mb high over Northern Alaska with a deep low
over the Northwest Territory and another low over the Bering Sea.
This pattern will persist through Sun, then start to slowly break
down Mon through Wed as a strong short wave moves from the NW
Territory low west over the Yukon Territory and Eastern Interior
of Alaska, and the low in the Bering Sea moves southeast into the
Gulf of Alaska. The Ridge will finally break down about Thu as a
strong short wave moves from Eastern Russia to the West Coast of
Alaska.

Surface...
An occluded front stretching from Provideniya to the YK Delta to
Will move to the Bering Strait to Bethel by 4am Sun and then
dissipate. This is causing a mix of rain and snow over the YK
Delta that will move NW to the Bering Strait and St Lawrence Is
tonight then dissipate.

A second occluded front in the southeast Bering will move to the
Bristol Bay Coast Sun PM and  will bring a slight chance of rain
and snow to the YK Delta Sun night into Mon, then dissipate Mon PM
as the front dissipates.

A weak thermal trough that lies from McGrath to Big Delta will
weaken tonight and then reform Sun PM. This will cause south winds
15g25 mph through Alaska Range Passes and East winds 15g25 mph
from Big Delta to Nenana this PM, then again Sun PM as the trough
strengthens each PM.

An Arctic cold front that lies from Banks Island to Wrangel
Island will move to Inuvik to Mayo to Barter Island to Wainwright
by 4am Sun, to Dawson to Barter Island to Point Lay by 4pm Sun, to
Northway to Tanana to Deadhorse to Point Lay by 4pm Mon, then to
Northway to McGrath to Ambler by 4pm Tue. Expect stratus clouds
and patchy fog with the front along the Arctic Coast. The front
will also cause east winds 25 to 35 mph along the Arctic Coast
from Utqiagvik east Sun PM into Mon, with gusts 35 to 45 mph and
blowing snow near Barter Island Sun PM into Mon. The front will be
dry in the Interior, but cause NE winds 10 to 2o mph with gusts
25 mph at Finger Mtn, Eagle Summits, and Elliot Highway Summits.
Will also see surface highs cool 10-15F from the Sunday highs with
the frontal passage on Mon and Tue.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
At 12Z models all verify 20-30 meter too low on the h500 blocking
high located over the Northern Interior of Alaska. All models
show this high persisting through Sun and then weakening slowly
next week. Since this high is stronger than models initialize,
and is the block portion of an omega block, expect the high to
persist longer and weaken more slowly than models indicate. That
being said, all models indicate a short wave trough moving from
the high Arctic south over the Yukon Territory and Eastern
Interior of Alaska Mon and Tue.

At 850 mb, models initialize well, and show similar conditions
through Mon, with the NAM and ECMF cooling temps more on Tue than
the GFS. Given that that the models all weaken the ridge aloft
too fast, favor the warmer GFS solution for Tue.

For precipitation, models show same general pattern with a chance
of precip over zones 213 and 214 next few days, and a slight
chance near Northway Mon PM and Tue. Will go with the GFS precip
for the most part, as the NAM show light convective precip under
the blocking high where now clouds are forming.

At the surface models verify well at 15Z. Models show same
