A 1000 mb low in the central Bering Sea will track east, passing
south of St. Matthew Island Wednesday afternoon, then reaching
the Kuskokwim Delta Wednesday evening. High pressure will then 
build across the eastern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea Thursday.

Alaska. High pressure is building E over the Chukchi Sea, Bering
Strait, and Eastern Bering Sea. A 1042 mb high will develop over
the Gulf of Anadyr Thu morning and move over the Seward 
Peninsula by Fri morning at 1040 mb.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

SYNOPSIS...Will continue to be relatively quiet this week with
cool temperatures. Some light snow will move across the Arctic
tonight and Wednesday as a weak front moves through. A fast
moving low will move into the Eastern Bering Sea south of the
Yukon Delta spreading some snow south of Mountain Village and
Anvik Wednesday morning, the low then dives southeast and merges
with a low in the Gulf of Alaska. A trough will develop over the
Interior with flurries and possibly some light snow in Fairbanks
and vicinity Thursday, but at this time no significant
accumulation is expected.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...06/12Z solutions are in good agreement aloft in the short
term, go slightly astray in the early midrange, then come off the
rails beyond that. Solutions continue to handle the polar low
diving south. Precipitation solutions are in good agreement. Will
be increasing the chance of Precipitation in the Interior Thursday
as the inverted trough moves over the area, then stalls and
retrogrades a bit as the low dives into the Gulf and east to
Yakutat. Wind solutions are in good agreement but will be kicking
up the winds a bit in the Lower Yukon Delta as they have been
stronger than the solutions the past couple events.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Trough over the AlCan will slide east. The
low that was over the North Pole has now moved to 200 nm northeast
of Wrangel Island at 492 dam, while the low near Banks Island has
moved north of the Island at 503 dam. The low northwest of
Wrangle Island will move over Utqiagvik Wednesday afternoon with a
trough extending southwest to a 521 dam low near Nunivak Island.
Ridging over the North Pacific has pushed over the Central and
Eastern Bering Sea with 540 dam heights pushed to 60N today and
will rotate southeast and be south of the Alaska Range by
Wednesday afternoon. The low over Utqiagvik will dig south over
the Central Interior Thursday moving over Fairbanks Friday
morning, then east over the Upper Tanana Valley by Saturday
morning as ridging builds north over the southwest mainland. At
850 hpa...The -10C isotherm is south of the forecast area, while
the -20C isotherm lying from Eagle to Dot Lake to McGrath to
Shishmaref. By Tuesday afternoon not much change over the Central
and Eastern Interior, but out west the isotherms will be pushed
north a little as a low moves through the area. Wednesday
afternoon the -10C isotherm will again be south of the forecast
area, while the -20C isotherm will lies from Eagle to Nenana to
the Bering Strait. the -20 will remain stationary tonight, then is
pushed north a little Wednesday as the low in the Bering Sea moves
to the southwest mainland and eventually into the Gulf. As the low
moves east across the gulf the -20C isotherm will be pulled south
over the West Coast and Western Interior and southeast into the
Central and Eastern Interior.

Surface...High pressure building over the forecast area today,
extending from a 1036 mb high in Siberia to a 1025 mb high in the
Northwest Territories. Low pressure persists across the Arctic
with a 1012 mb low just northeast of Banks Island and a 1018 mb
low 300 nm north of Utqiagvik. High pressure will continue between
the ranges as the Bering Sea low moves to Kuskokwim Bay by
Wednesday afternoon at 1000 mb, then dives southeast to the Gulf
by Thursday morning at 990 mb. The low north of Utqiagvik will
move over Utqiagvik Wednesday afternoon as it weakens, then slide
east as the low near Banks Island moves into the Northern Beaufort
Sea. As the low moves into the gulf an inverted trough will
develop from Cook Inlet to Old Crow, YT. High pressure will be
trying to build back over the Interior and Arctic north of the
Ranges as a 1041 mb high moves to St Lawrence Island, but the
trough will hold strong in the vicinity of Fairbanks. This
interaction will have a huge impact on whether or not the Interior
clears out with the cold air surging in.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...A weak front will spread some
clouds and flurries east across the Arctic tonight and early
Wednesday with clearing from the west by afternoon. No
significant snowfall is expected. Winds southwest to west to 15
mph for most locations. Temperatures generally falling the
remainder of the week.

West Coast and Western Interior...Low moving across the Bering
Sea will spread some clouds to the Norton Sound Region, the Lower
Yukon Delta, and Upper Kuskokwim Wednesday. Snow will move to the
lower Yukon Delta by afternoon and Upper Kuskokwim by evening,
then clear Thursday morning from the west. Winter Weather
Advisories in effect for the Lower Yukon Delta for blowing snow
and difficult travel conditions. From the Seward Peninsula north
the temperatures will be quite cold with lows falling into the 20s
and 30s below in clear areas. As the clouds clear to the south
temperatures will also be falling in that area. The cold
temperatures will hold on through Saturday, then start warming.

Central and Eastern Interior...Another cold night as skies will
remain mostly clear to partly cloudy. Increasing clouds Wednesday
night with some snow moving into the area with less than an inch
of accumulation for most areas. Clearing again Friday with more
cold temperatures through Saturday, near record lows possible
Saturday morning, and into Sunday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A storm in the Bering Sea will
send a weather front to the southwest mainland with snow pushing
inland to Galena and the Alaska Range Sunday. Snow will continue
to push into the Interior, mainly south of the Yukon River Sunday
then taper off to flurries Sunday night. From the Seward Peninsula
north and across the Arctic partly to mostly cloudy conditions
will prevail with a few flurries possible. Temperature will remain
on the cool side through the week.
