Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow showers currently falling over portions of the Central
and Eastern Interior will slowly push east this afternoon through
tonight, with most of the snow falling over the Eastern Interior
Friday. Attention then quickly shifts to St. Lawrence Island
tonight and the West Coast by Friday morning as a strong front
impacts the area, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds. This system
will slowly move across the Western Interior and into the Central
Interior over the weekend, producing a large swath of heavy snow
over much of the Interior, primarily south of the Brooks Range.

.DISCUSSION...
At the surface, models are in good agreement with a 994 mb low
over the Northern Gulf of Alaska with a trough extending north
across the Eastern Interior. As the afternoon progresses, a
number of week surface lows will form over the Eastern Brooks
Range, slowly pushing east into the Yukon by Friday night. The
main focus for the short term will be a strong low tracking east
from the Kamchatka Peninsula, swinging a front across the Bering
Sea to St. Lawrence Island tonight. This low will move into the
Gulf of Anadyr, pushing the front into the West Coast Friday
morning. The low will then track to the Seward Peninsula by
Saturday afternoon and north to Kotzebue Sound by the overnight
hours. Then, this low will track east across the Northern
Interior, just south of the Brooks Range, to the AlCan border by
Sunday morning. Ahead of this low, a strong front will move
through the Western Interior Friday afternoon and then east into
the Central Interior Friday night. This front will allow ample
moisture to feed north across the Yukon Delta into the Interior,
producing a large swath of heavy accumulating snow over much of
the Western Interior east into the Central Interior through the
weekend.

Aloft, at 500 mb, models initialize well with the main features
being a trough that remains in place over the eastern half of the
forecast area, with a ridge extending northward over the Bering
Sea. The ridge pushes east and flattens as a trough digs south
over the Western Bering Saturday morning. This trough will rotate
east into Northwest Alaska, thus causing the flow aloft to turn
southwesterly over the Interior by Saturday afternoon. This
trough will continue to push east across the Interior and into
Canada by Monday morning.

Overall model agreement has improved with the upcoming system to
impact most of Northern Alaska tonight into the weekend, so for
today's forecast package we used a general blend of model solutions.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
High pressure north of the Arctic Coast will keep weather
conditions relatively benign for the short term. East winds will
increase from Point Lay to Point Hope on Friday as a strong storm
moves through the Bering, tightening the pressure gradient along
the Chukchi Sea Coast which will persist through Saturday. As the
low moves across the Northern Interior, light snow will begin to
fall over portions of the Brooks Range Saturday afternoon into
Sunday, with snowfall amounts generally less than one inch.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Relatively quiet weather conditions most of this afternoon over a
large portion of the region as a weak ridge is overhead. This
will quickly come to an end tonight for St. Lawrence Island as a
strong front quickly approaches, bringing heavy snow and gusty
winds. This front will then move to the West Coast early Friday
morning, and then into the Western Interior by Friday evening.
This will usher in ample moisture and produce widespread heavy
snow over much of the region, with the heaviest snowfall south of
a line from the Seward Peninsula to Huslia, where localized
snowfall amounts may exceed one foot, with most areas seeing 5 to
10 inches of snow before it comes to an end Sunday.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow showers currently falling over much of the region will
slowly push east this afternoon through tonight, with most of the
snow falling over the Eastern Interior Friday before it tapers
off in the evening. Expect light snow accumulation of generally
less than one inch. In addition, blowing snow chances for portions
of the Southeastern Interior will come to an end tonight as the
winds ease. Otherwise, relatively quiet conditions are expected
for most of the day on Friday. This is before a strong front
pushes into the Central Interior late Friday evening, bringing
increase chances of snow, with the snow becoming heavy at times
Saturday. Snowfall accumulations of 8 to 12 inches from Chena Hot
Springs southwest to Lake Minchumina, with the heaviest snowfall
likely in the hills around Fairbanks, along with the Ray and White
Mountains. We will continue to monitor the evolution of this
system, so stay tuned to the forecast for future updates.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A strong weather front moving into the Eastern Bering Sea tonight
through Friday morning will help break up the ice edge and may
push sea ice up onto the coast, into Scammon Bay and near the
Yukon Delta. In addition, water may be pushed up through open
leads in the ice along the Yukon Delta Coast as well.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
Beginning the extended period on Sunday, model concensus shows a
large storm moving east across the Interior, bringing ample
amounts of snow over the region. This will set up a trough over
much of Northern Alaska, keeping snow chances over the Eastern
Interior through the extended period. Flow will become northerly
on the west side of the trough, which will usher in a surge of
colder air across the North Slope and into the Interior by the
middle of next week, bringing a return of below normal
temperatures.
