A 992 mb low in Norton Sound will move NE. High pressure will 
move over the Eastern Bering Sea by Sun morning and by Sun 
afternoon will extend from Bristol Bay to the Bering Strait and 
the Chukotsk Peninsula. By Mon morning the high pressure will be 
over the West Coast and Chukchi Sea with a 1009 mb low moving E 
along 60N to Nunivak Island by Tue morning.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Snow showers will continue today into tonight for the eastern
Interior. These showers will gradually taper off late tonight.
Attention then turns to a strong weather system that will bring heavy
snow to the West Coast on Friday and into the Interior for the
weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The 01/00UTC model suite initialized well when compared to
observational data. The models are all very similar in terms of
the upper level flow pattern; however, the models have differences
in placement of the surface low that is expected to bring heavy
precipitation as it moves east over the area Friday into the
weekend. The differences in the track of the low will affect the
placement and timing of the snowfall. The GFS remains the most
aggressive in terms of snowfall totals for this event. We went
with more of a middle of the road blend given the uncertainty.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a trough remains in place over the eastern Half
of the forecast area, with a ridge extending northward over the
Bering Sea. By Friday night, both of these features will push
southward, and west to westerly flow will set up over the forecast
area. The flow aloft will turn more southwesterly on Saturday as
a trough digs south over the western Bering Sea. This trough will
push east over the forecast area on Sunday.

At the surface, a 993 mb low is in place over the northern Gulf of
Alaska, with a 998 mb low over the central Yukon Territory. A
trough extends along the Alcan Border and over the eastern Brooks
Range. High pressure from this extends eastward over the Siberian
Arctic and northern Chukchi Sea. A number of week surface lows
will form over the eastern Brooks Range into Friday. A strong low
will move into the Gulf of Anadyr early Friday. The models
continue to differ on the track of the low thereafter. A front
associated with this low will will reach the reach the west coast
on Friday morning and will push east into the Interior Friday
night and Saturday. The NAM has the low reaching Norton sound by
Friday evening, with the low tracking east across the northern
Interior, reaching the AlCan Border by early Sunday morning. The
GFS takes a similar track; however, the GFS does not have the low
reaching Norton Sound until Saturday afternoon. The ECMWF continue
to show a more northerly track for the low, with the low pushing
inland over Kotzebue Sound and moving east over the Brooks Range.

Central and Eastern Interior...
We will see snow showers continue at times into Friday, with the
highest chances for snow and heaviest accumulations expected this
morning. Gusty winds will also result in blowing snow at times
this morning, primarily in the southeastern Interior. An
additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible today; however
accumulation will be variable over the area as the snowfall will
be showery in character. Relatively quiet conditions are expected
for most to the day on Friday. Snowfall will push into the
Interior Friday evening and will become heavy on Saturday. From
Fairbanks west, 8 to 12 inches of snow is possible, with the
heaviest snowfall likely in the hills west and north of Fairbanks,
along with the Ray and White Mountains. We currently anticipate
the precipitation to fall in the form snow; however, there is some
potential for rain to mix in west of Fairbanks. We will continue
to monitor the evolution of this system as there is still a great
deal of model uncertainty affecting affecting timing and placement
of snowfall along with snowfall amounts.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Today will be mostly uneventful, with some blowing snow lingering
in over the northern Seward Peninsula. A strong front will bring
heavy snow to St. Lawrence Island by late Thursday night, to the
West Coast by Friday, and to the Western Interior by Friday night.
The heaviest snowfall is expected south of a line from the Seward
Peninsula to Huslia. Snowfall amounts up to a foot may occur
locally with most areas seeing 5 to 10 inches of snow before it
tapers off Sunday. There is some possibility that the snow may mix
with rain, especially in the Yukon Delta and Lower Yukon Valley
as warmer air pushes into the region Friday night and Saturday. A
lot of uncertainty still surrounds this system.

North Slope and Brooks Range..East winds will increase from
Point Lay to Point Hope on Friday and persist through Saturday.
Snow is expected as the low mentioned above moves east across the
area Saturday into Sunday. Snowfall amounts in the Brooks Range
will be relatively light compared to points further to the south,
although snowfall amounts will be determined by the track of the
low, which does have a lot of uncertainty at the moment, so we
will have to keep an eye out.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A weather front moving to
the Eastern Bering Sea tonight and Friday will help break up the
sea ice edge and may push sea ice up onto the coast, into Scammon
Bay, and near the Yukon Delta. Water may be pushed up through
open leads in the ice along the Yukon Delta Coast as well as the
low approaches.

Extended Forecast days 4 through 7...Continued troughing over the
mainland with periods of westerly flow aloft will support chances
for additional snow next week throughout Northern Alaska.
Temperatures will remain below normal.
