A 1000 mb low near Point Hope will move to the Eastern Brooks
Range 4am Fri. A 1002 mb 80 NM north of Prudhoe Bay will move to 
100 NM northeast of Demarcation Point as a 1004 mb low by 4pm Thu,
then to near Tuktoyaktuk as a 1009 mb low by 4am Fri. then 
continuing east.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Northern Alaska continues in a dynamic westerly flow pattern that
will persist into the weekend and early next week, with systems
moving rapidly east across Northern Alaska.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
 The 24/12z model suite initialized well as far as location for
major features but initialized the Bering Strait Low nearly 6 mb
too weak. Winds in the afternoon forecast package have again been
increased to account for these differences. Model spread is
reasonable into the weekend but increases rapidly into early next
week.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a trough from the Pole south
over the Bering Strait and the Bering Sea and a ridge over the
Eastern Pacific. This pattern continues to cause moderate
southwest flow over northern Alaska that will persist through the
weekend. A series of strong short waves moving east through this
flow will bring periods of snow through the weekend to most of
Northern Alaska.

Surface...
A 996 mb low currently near Point Hope 985 will continue to
weaken to 1000 mb as it pushes north and east tonight to be
located 100 nm north of Demarcation point by Thursday morning. A
front trailing south and west of the low will continue to push
east through the Western Interior tonight and into the Central
Interior Tomorrow and the Eastern Interior by Friday. Snow along
the low and front will spread east with the front, then taper off
west of the front tonight and Thu as high pressure builds over the
West Coast Thu. Southwest winds 15 mph will accompany the front
as it spreads east today, with gusts to 30 mph over highways
summits and Brooks Range Passes. Expect storm totals of 4-8 inches
through the Western and Central Interior with the heaviest
amounts in higher terrain along a Central to Fairbanks to Denali
Park to McGrath line through Thursday. Snowfall will taper off
quickly to the south and east of Fairbanks where generally 1 to 3
inches is expected.

A low currently in the Sea of Okhotsk continues to move east into
the Western Bering Sea by 4pm Thu, and to the Yukon Delta as a
1007 mb low by 9pm Fri. This will bring snow and blowing snow to
zones 213 and 214 on Sat night and Fri.

Another deep low pressure system moving east out of the Western
Bering Sea on Sunday will push a strong front north and east onto
the West Coast south of the Bering Strait on Sunday and through
the Bering Strait and Western Interior on Monday. Another round of
strong winds, snow and blowing snow will push up the West Coast
south of the Bering Strait on Sunday and north of the Bering
Strait and into the Western Interior on Sunday night and Monday

West Coast and Western Interior...A strong storm now over Point
Hope will continue to weaken as it moves north and east over the
North Slope tonight. Heavy snow and blowing snow over higher
terrain in the Western Interior will also improve later this
evening and overnight with storm total snowfall expected to be in
the 4 to 8 inch range. Conditions will continue to improve on
Thursday with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of snow expected
for most locations. Winter Weather Advisories continue for the
Western Interior through late this evening.

Central and Eastern Interior...Snow, heavy at times continues over
much of the Central Interior with light snow to the south and east
of Fairbanks. Moist southwest flow aloft will continue into
Thursday with storm total snowfall in the 4 to 8 inch range from
Fairbanks north and west through Thursday. Storm total snowfall
will be much lighter to the south and east of Fairbanks with less
than 3 inches expected in these areas. Southwest winds around 20
mph with gusts to 30 mph over higher terrain and highway summits
will continue to produce blowing and drifting and low visibilities
through Thursday. Winter Weather Advisories continue for these
areas through Thursday. Gusty winds continue through the Alsaka
Range Passes and combined with falling snow will produce low
visibilities along the Parks Highway north of Carlo Creek into
Thursday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Gusty winds along the Brooks Range
and combined with falling snow will produce low visibilities in
blowing snow along the Dalton Highway in zone 206. A Winter
Weather Advisory has been issued for this area for low
visibility blowing snow through tonight. Light snow and areas of
blowing snow are expected over the rest of the North Slope tonight
and Thursday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 to 7...
A low pressure system will push east out of the Bering Sea into
the YK Delta on Saturday and will produce another round of snow
and blowing snow Friday night and Saturday in the YK Delta. A
strong front wrapping around a deep low in the Central Bering Sea
will push into the West Coast and St Lawrence Island on Sunday and
will push north of the Bering Strait and into Kotzebue Sound
Sunday night and Monday. Very strong winds, heavy snow and low
visibilities are expected with this storm along the West Coast and
Western Interior.
