.SYNOPSIS...We expect relatively quiet conditions for most of the
forecast area through Monday. Winds will pick up over St.
Lawrence Island and the Norton Sound region today resulting in
some blowing snow to develop over St. Lawrence Island.
A strong front will approach Saint Lawrence Island Tuesday
morning, then push into the west coast Tuesday night.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft, at 500 mb, currently we have a trough over the Canadian
Border, a ridge over the west coast and a trough over eastern
Russia. This general blocking pattern will remain in place into
Sunday before the trough over eastern Russia starts to slide to
the east Sunday night. Ridging will break down early next week and
a broad southwesterly flow pattern will set up over the State by
mid week.

Surface...A 988 mb low in the western Bering will move
east today and weaken. A weak 1000 mb low will move inland over
the Yukon Delta today and weaken to 1004 mb. Weak troughing will
persist over the west coast on Sunday. A 1025mb high pressure
will move east across the high Arctic and strengthen to 1030 mb on
Sunday. A strong front will approach Saint Lawrence Island Tuesday
morning, then push into the west coast Tuesday night.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A relatively quiet weekend is expected across the Interior. High
temperatures will be in the teens to single digits above zero.
Lows in the short term will be in the teens to single digits below
zero (with a few cold spots in the Yukon Flats and Yukon River
Valley dropping into the 20s below zero. We are not anticipating
any precipitation through Monday. Cloud cover and chances for snow
increase Tuesday through Thursday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Mostly clear skies with some areas of stratus and fog.
Low temperatures expected to fall into the 20s below over the
weekend. Winds should increase along the Beaufort Sea Coast on
Sunday night as a trough of low pressure develop along the north
side of the Brooks Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Winds will increase over St. Lawrence Island, the Yukon Delta and
near Norton Sound today. As the winds increase, some blowing snow
may develop, especially over St. Lawrence Island. At the moment,
we don't anticipate that the visibility will drop low enough to
warrant an advisory. Low chances of snow expected over the west
coast as weak troughing will persist into Sunday. Light
accumulations expected. A strong front will increase the
potential for blizzard conditions on Tuesday over Saint Lawrence
Island and the Bering Strait. Snow and blowing snow will spread
inland Tuesday night into Wednesday.

...Winter Storm for the West Coast Tuesday and Wednesday...

Strong winds and heavy snow, along with blowing and drifting snow
are anticipated Tuesday and Wednesday as a weather system moves
over the West Coast. Blizzard conditions may develop as this
system moves over the area.

Right now, it looks like the weather system will reach St.
Lawrence Island by Tuesday afternoon and will move over the West
Coast late Tuesday into early Wednesday. At this point, there is
still some uncertainty with the details of this system, including
the timing, so stay tuned to weather.gov/fairbanks for the latest
forecast information.
