Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Conditions are slowly improving along the West Coast as winds have
subsided, leading to increased visibilities this morning.
Lingering light snow continues in these areas as well as into
portions of the Western Interior as the low pressure system
continues to dissipate today. For the Fairbanks area, occasional
light snow is possible for today, while the North Slope looks to
remain relatively quiet, aside from the the occasional low ceiling
and fog. Overall, seasonably cool to near normal temperatures are
expected going into the weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level pattern this morning consists of a low centered
over mainland Alaska, weak ridging over the southern Bering Sea,
and a closed low over the western Bering Sea. The upper low over
Alaska will slowly meander to the east today, while the ridge
builds across portions of southwest Alaska by tomorrow morning.
The upper level low in the western Bering will move east as well
and undercut the ridge, with the main energy sliding into the Gulf
of Alaska by late Saturday and phasing with the weak upper low
that sticks around the eastern border of Alaska. Overall, a pretty
benign pattern with the colder Arctic airmass remaining over the
state, resulting in at or below climatological average
temperatures going into next week.

At the surface, low pressure that has moved into the Central
Interior is bringing light snow to portions of the Western and
Central Interior this morning. This low pressure will slowly
dissipate today with light snow reaching as far east as Fairbanks
into this afternoon. Low pressure near 80N 120W is sending a weak
front that will reach the North Slope this evening, bringing
increasing clouds and slight chances for snow going into tonight.
Low pressure has developed in the Yukon Territory, but chances for
snow remain low for the Eastern Interior north of Northway today.
Low pressure moving onto the southern shores from the Gulf of
Alaska will send a front to the north that will increase chances
for snow along the far eastern portions of the Alaska Range and
reaching areas such as Northway late this afternoon. As this low
pressure exits to the east, high pressure will move over the state
and suppress any chances for snow going into the weekend.

Any wind issues over the next 24 hours will be limited to the
eastern Alaska Range as the surface high pressure builds into the
Interior, tightening the pressure gradient across the mountains.
These conditions will result in increasing north winds through the
Alaska Range, particularly Isabel Pass to Trims Camp beginning
this morning and lasting until tomorrow morning. Deep surface low
pressure that will move into the Bering Sea by Saturday will
tighten the pressure gradient across the Interior. These
conditions will result in increasing easterly winds beginning
Saturday morning.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow is occurring in areas of the Eastern Interior this
morning, with the steadiest snow occurring south of Fairbanks at
the foothills and into the Alaska Range according to the radar.
These conditions are expected to remain through today, with minor
snow accumulations. As the snow dissipates, not much weather of
note in the Fairbanks area. Snow chances increasing in the far
eastern Alaska Range and into Northway today as a front moves
north from the Gulf of Alaska. North winds of 15 to 25 mph with
gusts to 35 mph are expected to develop in the Alaska Range from
Isabel Pass to Trims Camp today and last through tomorrow morning.
Temperatures are expected to remain below normal going into the
weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low stratus and fog are encompassing portions of the North Slope
today. A front will move in from the north, resulting in more
widespread cloud cover and increasing chances for light snow from
Nuiqsut east through this evening. Otherwise quiet conditions with
temperatures near normal over the next several days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Winds have subsided along the Bering Strait, resulting in
improved conditions this morning. Lingering snow in the Western
Interior will slowly dissipate today as surface high pressure
begins to build in from the north. Conditions will remain quiet
going into tomorrow before increasing east winds along St.
Lawrence Island due to a strong surface low that moves into the
Bering Sea. Temperatures remaining below normal, but will be
trending warmer going into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
