High pressure over Chukotka is pushing SE across the area as a 999
mb low in Norton Sound moves inland and dissipates tonight. By Thu
evening a 1023 mb high will be over the Chukotsk Peninsula as the
high pressure weakens and is being pushed N by a broad area of low
pressure around a 983 mb low in the Western Bering Sea.

Pressure gradient will loosen through the day today north of the 
Bering Strait. A broad 984 mb low west of the Aleutian chain will
spin off two separate low pressure systems. A 987 mb low will be 
located NNW of Adak Station and a 984 mb low NW of Attu Station 
this evening. This complex of lows will travel eastward towards
the weekend.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Stratus is covering most of the West Coast and Interior today,
with some areas of fog and flurries, but otherwise weather conditions
are relatively quiet in Northern Alaska. This will change for the
West Coast tonight and tomorrow as a polar low moves into Norton
Sound, bringing gusty winds, snow, and blowing snow to the area.
For the Interior and up on the North Slope, conditions will remain
fairly quiet throughout the week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The overall pattern will stay fairly consistent throughout the
week in the upper levels, with broad troughing centered over the
state. 12Z models initialized well with the features within this
broad trough, including a 506 dam closed low over the Eastern
Brooks Range. Models are in good agreement on how the details
within the pattern will progress over the next few days, with the
low over the Brooks Range sliding a little west, while a stronger
upper level low dives across the Bering Strait tonight, and then
parks itself at the base of the broad trough, over South-Central
AK, through Thursday. A polar low will rapidly develop at the
surface along and ahead of the diving upper level low, moving
across St. Lawrence Island this evening, and into Norton Sound
Wednesday morning, bringing snow, gusty winds, and blowing snow to
those areas. After that low moves through, high pressure over
Siberia combined with low pressure over the Bering Sea and Alaska
will create strong N/NW winds through the Bering Strait region.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Widespread stratus, occasional flurries, and below normal
temperatures are the name of the game today, and will continue to
be all the way through Friday. The only chances for accumulating
snow would be Wednesday night through Thursday night for areas
south and east of Fairbanks, but its a slight chance at best, and
would be less than 1" of total snowfall. Mostly cloudy skies will
prevent overnight lows from dropping past the teens below, but in
areas where it does clear, lows could easily drop to the
-20F to -30F range.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Fairly quiet conditions today, with only some areas of blowing
snow and fog along the Arctic Coast. The quiet weather will
continue through Friday across the area, with the only exception
being some gusty west winds and blowing snow along the Beaufort
Coast starting Thursday night.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Widespread stratus is covering most of the area today, with
occasional light snow or flurries falling underneath. Conditions
will become more active as a polar low moves across St. Lawrence
Island this evening, into Norton Sound by Wednesday morning, and
then into the Western Interior through Wednesday evening. With
this, expect snow, gusty winds, and blowing snow, especially for
areas along the coast where winds could gust to 35 mph. Most
areas can expect 1-3" of snow or less. The Yukon Delta looks to be
hit the hardest with the combination of snow and blowing snow, so
a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect, primarily due to reduced
visibility in blowing snow. Behind this system, stronger N/NW
winds will develop from the Bering Strait down through the Yukon
Delta, with blowing and drifting snow expected. Expect winds
gusting to 40-45 mph in the Bering Strait, and to 30-40 mph along
the Yukon Delta. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the
Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea Coast regions from Wednesday morning
through Thursday morning for reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...
Models are in fair agreement that Northern Alaska will remain
under broad troughing through the extended period. So, expect
continued below normal temperatures in most areas, with chances
for accumulating snow on the West Coast and in the Interior.
