.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A front draped across mainland Alaska off of a strong, but occluded
low in the Bering Strait continues to push eastward this morning,
producing widespread rain, snowfall, and gusty winds across
Southern Alaska. Low-level southerly flow has resulted in warmer
temperatures across much of the forecast area, with some coastal
locations like Homer and Whittier seeing rain near sea level
during the day. Overnight, however, temperatures have cooled
slightly, meaning precipitation has mostly transitioned back to
snow or a rain/snow mix at low elevation coastal locations.
Primarily light snow with minimal accumulations have fallen in the
western Kenai and Anchorage Bowl as unfavorable low-level south-
southeasterly flow has resulted in downsloping and has prevented
much of the moisture from making it across the coastal mountains.
Away from the effects of downsloping further inland, snow has
fallen steadily, with a reports of one inch per hour snowfall
rates in parts the Susitna Valley and accompanying visibility as
low as one quarter mile. Also, an upper-level shortwave over the
eastern Bering Sea is now attempting to phase with a developing
triple-point low along the eastern Aleutians/AKPEN. This
strengthening feature has provided a renewed burst of energy to
snow in Southwest Alaska this morning, but also continues to
bring warmer temperatures, turning precipitation to rain in King
Salmon and across the southern Bristol Bay region.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good synoptic agreement regarding the track of
the low pressure system developing along the Alaska Peninsula. Models
generally agree that the low will continue to track northeast
along the Alaska Peninsula and into the Gulf of Alaska by tonight.
Tuesday morning, most models track this low into Prince William
Sound, but the GFS continues to be the outlier, keeping the low
out of the Sound and instead over the northern Gulf. The models
all show this weather pattern being very progressive, and so the
low is not likely to stall out in the Sound.

Looking ahead, there is increasing confidence in a strong low
entering the Bering Sea on Wednesday and strengthening with
hurricane force gusts as it tracks into eastern portions of the
Bering by Wed night. Uncertainty in the track of this low leaves
open the possibility for the eastern Aleutians, or more likely
the AKPEN, to be impacted by these strong winds.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Predominantly VFR ceilings and visibility expected before
midnight. Periods of MVFR ceilings with IFR visibility are
possible with intermittent snow showers. Southeasterly winds
diminish and shift northwesterly around midnight, with steadier
snow developing through the early morning hours bringing likely
IFR cig/vsby through midday Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Tuesday Night)...

The extremely active weather pattern across Southcentral continues
this morning. A strong front is draped across the western Gulf,
being enhanced by a 125 kt southwesterly jet right over
Southcentral. Thus, a feed of subtropical moisture is being thrown
into the area, causing widespread precipitation. Most of it is
snow, but rain is mixing in right along the immediate coast.
Temperatures have warmed substantially, with many areas already in
the mid 30s. Highs today will get into the mid to upper 30s for
all of Southcentral except the Susitna Valley, Copper River Basin,
and Valdez. Since much of Southcentral is ahead of the front, this
has set up a pressure gradient along the Kenai and Chugach
mountains, resulting in gusty southeasterly flow through Turnagain
Arm and across those mountain ranges. This has resulted in a
distinct downslope shadow, which is keeping any precipitation for
Anchorage, the Matanuska Valley, and much of the western Kenai
north of Clam Gulch very light, and occasionally mixing with rain.

This pattern will continue today as a developing low tracking
along the front moves from near Nelson Lagoon and Sand Point to
Shelikof Strait this afternoon, near Seward this evening, and into
western Prince William Sound late tonight. On this track, the
southeasterly downslope flow will continue for the rest of today,
with the winds strengthening this afternoon as the geostrophic
flow around the approaching low pushes the wind across the
mountains faster. Once the low gets to near Seward the winds will
rapidly diminish, then flip around to the northwest as the low
moves into Prince William Sound. This will result in a deformation
zone developing and traversing across the Kenai Peninsula and
into Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley. These snow bands will
move through during the morning commute. A Winter Weather Advisory
has been issued for this.

All of the area's other warnings and advisories are mostly
unchanged with this forecast package. Heavy snow will continue
along the Seward Highway from Portage Valley south, Thompson Pass,
and around Cordova. Steady snow is also ongoing south of Clam
Gulch, and the Winter Weather Advisory for that area has been
extended through 6pm tonight, and may possibly need to be
extended further for the same aforementioned deformation band.

From this afternoon straight through Tuesday night, temperatures
will move in just one direction, down. As the low turns the flow
out of the northwest, a much colder air mass will spread across
the region from west to east through Tuesday, returning the area
to the deep freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The weather quiets down for nearly the entire area Tuesday night
save some limited areas of diminishing snow shower activity. The
next weak front approaches early Wednesday morning and could cause
some light snow for Kodiak Island and potentially the far southern
Kenai Peninsula later in the day before it largely dissipates.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 to 2: Today through
Tuesday night)...

A frontal system continues to push slowly across the area today
with continued light snow mainly from just east of Bethel and into
the Lower Kuskokwim Valley and Bristol Bay. Rain may mix with
snow this morning from King Salmon to Iliamna, while south of
King Salmon along the AKPen will mostly be rain as temperatures
remain in the mid to upper 30s today. The front will move through
the area this afternoon ushering in colder air. An upper level
shortwave near the eastern Aleutians has produced a surface low
south of Cold Bay this morning. This low will move along the AKPen
today and near Kodiak Island this afternoon and evening. A
deformation zone will form this afternoon and evening, enhancing
snowfall across Bristol Bay and bringing 5 to 7 inches of snow
from King Salmon northward towards the Lower Kuskokwim Valley.
This snow will then end tonight as the low rapidly moves
northeast of the area. Tuesday, the Southwest will see a brief
break with colder temperatures with highs in the teens. Tuesday
night into Wednesday, another front brings snow to the area
with generally 1 to 3 inches of snow expected and possibly
blowing snow along the Kuskokwim Delta coast.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS/AKPEN (Days 1 to 2: Today through
Tuesday night)...

A low pressure system will track near the AKPen today with gales
expected near the low. Cold air will move across the Bering today
producing snow showers and gales across the eastern Aleutians and
AKPen, with stronger gusts up to storm force possible in the bays
and passes south of the AKPen. These winds will decrease by
Tuesday evening. Another low near Kamchatka will track across the
northern Bering, pushing a front across the Bering Tuesday and
Tuesday night with gales, rain, and snow.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Wed thru Fri)...
Gulf of Alaska: As a low near the Prince William Sound tracks
eastward through Wednesday, winds in the Gulf diminish to
widespread small crafts with pockets of gales. On Thursday,
another low near Bristol Bay pushes its front into the Gulf. Winds
become southwesterly Thursday morning, with speeds increasing to
gale-force as the front moves across the Gulf. As the low tracks
towards the Prince William Sound, gale-force westerly outflow
winds look to resume Friday. Forecast confidence is average, with
diminishing confidence Thursday onwards due to uncertainty with
the track of the low.

Bering Sea: A low near Russia will produce a broad swath of gales
early Wednesday morning that extends across the Bering, impacting
the seas around the Pribilofs, Eastern Aleutians, and AKPEN.
Another low enters the Bering from the North Pacific through
Wednesday, bringing at least gale-force winds in the waters around
the Western Aleutians and storm-force winds near the Central
Aleutians. As the low tracks towards Bristol Bay, storm- force
winds are expected in the Eastern Bering throughout Thursday
before diminishing to gales on Friday. In the Western Bering,
outflow from Russia will produce northwesterly gales before winds
diminish below small crafts with building high pressure.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7...Wed through Sun)...

All models suggest an active storm pattern to continue across much
of the Great Land. The subtropical jet will remain largely
responsible for this pattern. It continues to drive through the
Aleutians at nearly 180 kts at 30,000' (300mb). To the north of
the jet, arctic air remains across much of the northern Bering. To
the south of it, warm air with abundant tropical moisture is
driving to the north. This is creating a breeding ground for
strong cyclogenesis. The next system will move into the Central
Aleutians late Wed into Thu. It will rapidly deepen as it
interacts with the jet and the colder air allowing it to fall over
24mb in 24 hours (bomb cyclone) with a minimum central pressure
progged around 950mb by Thu afternoon. This system looks will
track towards the west coast much farther south than the current
system. So even though it will bring warm air north with it, the
track should keep that warmer air farther south. This should allow
for a mostly snow event and create another possible round of
widespread winter weather hazards. It will plow from west to east
across all of southern AK through the early part of next weekend
(11-12 DEC).

The pattern does not look to change much by the end of the
weekend. The jet over the Bering will continue to allow for storms
to rapidly develop and track from west to east. Models are
currently advertising 2 distinct storms. One will be over the
Western Aleutians late Sat. The next one will follow on its heels
Mon and Tue. Meanwhile, the mainland will see a return to arctic
air and outflow winds near the coast. This set up will favor
strong (storm force) marine winds and heavy freezing spray as
well.
