A 1006 mb low 130 nm southeast of Kodiak City moves 90 nm southeast 
of Cordova Fri afternoon then dissipates. A 1000 mb low forms 50 nm 
south of Seward on Fri afternoon, then moves into Southeast Alaska 
at 1005 mb Sat afternoon. A 1010 mb low forms 50 nm northeast of 
Middleton Island Sat night and moves 80 nm west of Middleton Island 
at 1012 mb by Sun morning.

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A weakening upper level low is currently tracking southeast of
Adak, bringing light shower activity to the region. Quiet
conditions are seen across the remainder of the Bering/Aleutians
and Bristol Bay in very weak upper flow. This is leading to the
usual low stratus. A strong upper trough is beginning to descend
over the Kuskokwim Delta, however this will be more of an issue
for this late this evening into Friday. More active weather is
occurring over Southcentral as a trough moves west to east over
the region. Light rain will continue through the morning,
particularly over the Susitna Valley.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Forecast confidence remains high for widespread rainfall across
Southcentral and coastal Prince William Sound on Friday as a deep
upper trough tracks over the region. As the associated low forms
in the Gulf, the GFS and ECMWF form two distinct centers as it
merges with another low tracking near the Panhandle, while the
NAM/Canadian keep a single circulation. This will all affect the
timing/precipitation late Friday into Saturday, particularly over
Prince William Sound. A pattern shift appears likely thereafter,
with models indicating a ridge building in through Sunday, leading
to clearing skies and warmer temperatures.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Light winds will persist this morning with MVFR/VFR
ceilings. Winds will gradually increase this afternoon and
evening, potentially gusting up to 25 kts out of the south.
Ceilings will continue to vary between MVFR/VFR.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
this morning through Sunday)...

An upper level wave is quickly exiting to the southeast this
morning while an upper level trough over western Alaska is
still on track to arrive this afternoon. Expect increasing cloud
cover and showers this evening across much of Southcentral as the
system moves in. In addition, gusty southeasterly winds can be
expected to ramp up this afternoon and evening through the usual
places including Turnagain Arm, Knik River Valley, and the Copper
River Valley. By Friday, rain will spread across much of
Southcentral, and may fall heavily at times especially across the
Susitna Valley and Prince William Sound. As the system moves from
northwest to southeast across the area, winds will shift to
become northerly late Friday into early Saturday. Along with
northerly flow, colder temperatures can be expected. In fact, the
first sights of termination dust may be visible on the peaks of
the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains Saturday morning if the colder
model solutions verify. As an upper level ridge begins to build
to the west, pressure gradients will strengthen and gusty
northerly winds will ramp up early Saturday before diminishing
Saturday evening (especially through channeled terrain including
Thompson Pass). Overall, the main takeaway is after rainy
conditions move through Southcentral on Friday, conditions will
improve with clearing skies Saturday and Sunday as the ridge
builds in overhead.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Saturday)...

A rapidly moving upper level trough from the Artic has entered the
western Southwest this morning, which remains as the main
weather-driver mechanism bringing active weather across Southwest
as it transits eastward through Friday morning until it exits the
region Friday evening if not sooner. Cold air advection of -4 to
-6 degrees Celsius at 850 mb will begin to fill the northern
 Kuskokwim Delta around midnight tonight, then quickly races to
 Bristol Bay area and across Southwest throughout Friday morning.
 Although rain will accompany this system, there's a high
 potential for snow across the higher elevations from Kuskokwim
 Mountains through the Alaska Range on the backend of the
 precipitation, which could be the first freeze of the season. The
 upper-level ridge behind this phenomenon will let up rain from
 west to east starting Friday afternoon until the next series of
 rain begins to move across the Southwest Coast as a result of
 shortwave impulses moving in from the Bering on Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Saturday)...

Unsettled but benign weather continues across the Bering Aleutians
through the short term. A weakening upper low south of the central
Aleutians will continue to bring a lot of clouds and light rain across
the Aleutian Chain today and Friday. Meanwhile, an elongated front
over the Bering will continue southeastward through the southern
Bering tonight, causing winds to elevate around Bristol Bay and
south of the Alaska Peninsula on Friday morning into Friday
afternoon. Overall, winds will stay below gale force and no high
seas expected.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Generally light winds across the Bering. An area of gusty winds
with an Eastern Bering front less than gale force exits through
the Northern Bering Saturday night. An approaching low brings
gusty winds less than gale force into the Western Bering through
Monday. Forecast confidence is good through the period. A well
developed low in the central Gulf moves east through Monday. Gale
force gap winds open over the Barren Islands and Sitkinak gaps
into the Central Gulf by late Saturday, diminishing to less than
gale force winds through Monday. Seas to 16 feet across the
Western Gulf subsiding for Saturday night.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through Wednesday)...

A weak shortwave trough moving across interior Alaska may bring
some cloud cover to portions of the area for the day on Sunday.
Otherwise a longwave ridge is expected to continue building into
southern Mainland Alaska, setting up a period of dry weather for
much of southern Alaska. Any cold air from Saturday will be long
gone by Sunday, so depending on the amount of sunshine,
temperatures will be at or above seasonal normals.

The upper level ridge will shift east over Southcentral on Monday,
as the next low and associated fronts and precipitation move into
Southwest Alaska. Thus, the drier weather will end late in the day
Monday for areas of Southwest Alaska near the coast...and high
level cloud cover should advect over Southcentral, resulting in at
least some filtered sunshine.

By Tuesday there are some differences in timing as to how quickly
the precipitation with the aforementioned front moves into
Southcentral. Since usually the models are too quick to move
ridges away, a slower solution proposed by the Canadian looks most
reasonable, bringing rain across Southcentral late Wednesday
afternoon through the evening.

By Wednesday the differences in the models as to how fast the
precipitation moves across Southcentral into the Copper Basin and
the Gulf increase further. There is very low forecast confidence
by Wednesday.

It should be noted that the GFS strays significantly from the EC
and the Canadian as early as Sunday. Thus, the above discussion is
based on an EC/Canadian blend. However, despite the GFS being the
outlier, it's very stubborn persistence of the longwave ridge
persisting at least through Wednesday (and likely longer) should
not be ignored entirely due again to the tendency of the models to
break down longwave ridges too quickly. A perfect prog with the
GFS would mean most of Southcentral doesn't see a drop of rain for
much of next week, and that trend is only briefly interrupted by a
dissipating front moving over Southwest Alaska on Wednesday.

...RESUSPENDED ASH FROM NOVARUPTA LIKELY TO IMPACT SOUTHERN KODIAK
ISLAND FRIDAY AND SATURDAY...

Strong northwesterly winds to 40 mph are expected to develop
across Shelikof Strait and the waters around southern Kodiak
Island on Friday. These winds are likely to resuspend ash from
the 1912 Novarupta eruption, causing poor air quality. Villages
such as Karluk and Akhiok are most likely to be impacted.

Those in sensitive groups and with respiratory ailments in these
areas are encouraged to avoid or reduce outdoor activity to avoid
inhaling the ash.

The winds will subside on Saturday night, which will cause the
air quality to improve.

...Berg Glacier Dam Release...

Satellite observations indicate that the Berg glacier dammed
lake, located 65 miles east of Cordova, is likely releasing
downstream into the Gandil River, Bering River, and Bering Lake.
High water from this glacier dammed lake release usually lasts for
several days.

Mariners in the Controller Bay area should anticipate debris in the
water as a result of the flooding.
