.SYNOPSIS FOR SOUTHWEST ALASKA+BRISTOL BAY+THE ALASKA
PENINSULA WATERS AND THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS...

Semisopochnoi Volcano which is located approximately 140 nautical
miles west of Adak has been having occasional eruptions and a 
plume of ash has been observed on nighttime microphysics satellite
imagery this morning.

A 1003 mb low 120 nm southwest of Nikolski moves south in the 
North Pacific and weakens to 1010 mb this afternoon. Its 
associated front remains south of the Aleutians and spreads into 
the Gulf through Wed afternoon. A 1004 mb North Kamchatka low 145 
nm west of St Matthew Island Wed morning moves to 100 nm northwest
of Hooper Bay at 1003 mb Thu morning.

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A deep cold low over the Beaufort Sea anchors a long-wave trough
extending from eastern Russia across most of mainland Alaska. A
short-wave moving onshore of western Alaska is just clipping the
Kuskokwim Delta. Showers are strung out along the south end of a
nearly stationary surface front, which is sitting in the Hooper
Bay-Chevak area. Further south a vertically stacked low is
centered along the central Aleutians, within a positively tilted
short-wave trough. The surface low has bottomed out around 995 mb
this morning, while the associated frontal system is being driven
northeast toward Bristol Bay and the western Gulf/Kodiak Island
by a 125 kt subtropical jet. At the surface, areas of rain and
stronger winds extend from the central and eastern Aleutians to
the Alaska Peninsula, Bristol Bay, and Kodiak Island. A surface
ridge building out ahead of this storm system, along with lower
pressure over the Alaska Interior is leading to gusty southerly
flow and southeasterly gap winds. In particular, this pattern
favors windy conditions along Cook Inlet, Turnagain Arm, and
the Copper River.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models have largely converged on a common solution with the storm
system baring down on southern Alaska. There are still some minor
differences with track of the triple point low across the northern
Gulf. Tend to favor the hi-res models in this scenario due to
better representation of the coastal mountains and impact on a
low tracking along the coast. Overall forecast confidence with
this storm system is high.

The next storm of interest crosses the northern Bering Sea
Wednesday and tracks onshore near the Yukon Delta Thursday morning.
Models remain consistent with track of this low. The GFS is still
deeper than other solutions. With Arctic air wrapping into the
back side of the low, a deeper solution is possible. For now, will
go somewhere between the stronger GFS and weaker
NAM/ECMWF/Canadian solutions.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Gusty southeast Turnagain Arm winds will persist through
this evening, then die down overnight as a triple point low
reaches the northwest Gulf and strengthens down Inlet pressure
gradients. Rain will arrive around 06Z. Despite deep southwest
flow aloft, low level southeast flow across Kenai and Chugach
Mountains initially looks strong enough to keep ceilings in the
VFR category. This low level flow doesn't completely die down
until around 15Z, at which point the upper trough passes through
and all of the low level moisture banks up against the Chugach.
This seems like the most likely time to settle into MVFR
ceilings/vis, with potential for a very brief period of IFR
conditions. Then expect ceilings to return to VFR by Tuesday
afternoon as deep westerly flow advects in drier air.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Thursday)...

The arrival of a broad frontal system combined with a progressive
upper level trough will usher in gusty gap winds tonight, with a
lot of rain moving across Southcentral and Gulf of Alaska into
early Tuesday morning. As the front treks eastward, the bulk of
tropical moisture from the Gulf will dump right over Prince
William Sound through at least Tuesday afternoon. Latest solutions
have doubled down on reducing rainfall amounts over Anchorage
Bowl as dry air fills Anchorage while the upper level energy moves
rapidly eastward. Meanwhile, cloud remnants and rain from the low
will continue to make their way through PWS on Tuesday afternoon
and Tuesday night before tapering off Wednesday morning. Once the
low passes east of Resurrection Bay by Tuesday afternoon, wind
speeds are not concerning for Seward and Whittier if the low
continues on the eastward track through the south of Cordova.
However, should isobars strengthen
 in the next day or two, the
wind trending upward could be concerning for the local effects of
PWS. Overall, the precipitation coverage will remain in the
forecast tonight through Tuesday afternoon until conditions
improves across Southcentral between Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Thursday)...

A low has developed over the Eastern Aleutians this morning and is
making its way eastward. With the support of an upper level sub-
tropical jet, significant amounts of moisture are being pushed
along the AKPen through today, eventually spilling into parts of
Bristol Bay by late this afternoon. Rain showers are likely to
persist through early tonight before conditions become dry again
early Tuesday morning. Elsewhere across Southwest remains dry,
with cloudy skies and temperatures in the 50's and low 60's. By
late Tuesday night, a second system enters the northern Bering,
making its way towards the Southwest Coast. The low moves onshore
by late Wednesday evening, brings rounds of rain showers that
spread across the Southwest Mainland through Thursday afternoon.
Additionally, winds ahead of the low become increasingly gusty,
specifically across the Kuskokwim Valley, through Wednesday
evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Thursday)...

A low pressure system has developed along the Eastern Aleutians
this morning and spends today and tomorrow traveling eastward.
Winds south of the AKPen will likely increase to low end gales
early tonight and will diminish to below small craft by early morning.
In addition, moderate-to-heavy rainfall is expected along and
south of the AKPen through early tonight. Patchy fog may develop
across the Eastern Aleutians and southern AKPen, as well as
surrounding waters, during the overnight hours tonight as winds
being to die down and precipitation moves off to the east. The
Bering then becomes relatively calm until late Tuesday night/early
Wednesday morning as a separate low enters the northwest Bering.
This system brings an areas of small craft west- southwesterly
winds across the northern Bering and along the Southwest Coast
through Thursday morning. Similarly to the aforementioned low, the
new system carries an area of moderate to heavy rainfall across
the northern Bering late Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

A lee side low will from over the northern Gulf on Friday, leading
to gale force westerly winds through the Barren Islands and
Kennedy Entrance. Confidence in this feature is moderate as
guidance has consistently changed the speed that the associated
upper level low moves over Southcentral. Otherwise, expect winds
less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the Day 3 through 5
period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

Ensemble and deterministic model guidance agreement has improved
considerably since yesterday's runs, so forecast confidence in the
long term has increased. As discussed previously, most of the
uncertainty lay in the interaction between the Bering Strait upper
level low and an incoming north Pacific low forming on a
southerly jet streak. It now appears likely that the Bering Sea
shortwave will move rapidly east through the Interior on Friday,
bringing a quick shot of widespread rain to the southern Mainland.
For Southcentral, the question becomes how much of the moisture
makes it over the Alaska Range. At this time it looks like most
areas will receive some rain with a southwesterly component in
the wind field advecting in moisture from the Gulf.

The most significant change in the long term is the rapid
amplification of the pattern after the shortwave on Friday departs
southeast into British Columbia. Since this wave is no longer
having any interaction with the north Pacific low, significant
height building and ridging will occur over the eastern Bering and
AKPen Friday afternoon, after which will become a transitory,
shortwave ridge. This will lead to warmer, clearer, and drier
conditions over the Southern Mainland Friday night into Saturday.
On Sunday, the north Pacific low will continue to deepen as it
moves into the Bering and eventually Southwest Alaska on Monday.
As a result, widespread rain looks likely over the southern
Mainland Sunday and Monday. One caveat to this could be that the
models tend to breakdown ridges too quickly, but given that this
is a shortwave, transitory ridge this seems unlikely at this
time.
