Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad upper level trough over the Bering Sea is digging
southward and gradually shifting eastward into an upper level
ridge in place over the southeastern Gulf. This amplified pattern
is steering an abundance of tropical moisture northward over
Southcentral and the northern Gulf coast. Rain showers are moving
inland along the southern coast of Alaska, including over the
Alaska Peninsula, Prince William Sound, and Southcentral.
Meanwhile farther west, stratus and cloud cover persist across
the Bering.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Overall, model solutions remain in good agreement with synoptic
features and continue to depict an active and wet pattern over the
next several days. One big challenge with this forecast has been
a shift in model solutions advertising a downslope pattern for the
Anchorage Bowl and the western Kenai Peninsula. While this may
occur briefly during the onset of precipitation, a wetter
solution was still preferred.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...Gusty southeasterly Turnagain Arm winds will diminish by
early evening as a northerly wind flow develops. Light northerly
or variable winds are expected to become southerly again by late
Thursday morning as a trough exits the region. Incoming rain this
evening is expected to reduce ceilings, and possibly vis, to
MVFR.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Multiple competing forces have led to a complex precipitation
forecast for the Cook Inlet region tonight and tomorrow. Broad
southwesterly flow aloft will advect deep moisture into the area,
while cross barrier flow over the Chugach Mountains in the lower
levels will try to dry out the moisture. The drying effect is
expected to be strongest this evening through early Thursday
morning as the low moves into the southern Cook Inlet. The low is
expected to begin its inland to easterly push around sunrise,
which will transition flow throughout the column to the southwest
and then west. The wind shift will also be accompanied by a
shortwave moving in from southwest Alaska, which will reinvigorate
lift to bring widespread rain along the upslope areas of the
Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. Due to the high concentration of
moisture left over, rain is expected over these areas through
Thursday afternoon. On Friday, lingering moisture and a few weak
shortwaves embedded in southwest flow aloft will keep the pattern
of showers active through at least Saturday morning. Flow aloft
will then transition to the northwest, which should begin the
transition into drier weather for the rest of the weekend.

The bulk of the moderate to heavy rain associated with this
atmospheric river will be from Cordova east. Cordova will likely
receive 2 to 2.5 inches of total rain from this system.
Mountainous regions of the Copper River Basin, including
McCarthy, will see upwards of an inch of rain through Thursday
afternoon, while valley areas like Glennallen and Chitina will
remain drier due to downsloping.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Saturday afternoon)...

A potent upper level shortwave continues moving northward through
Southwest Alaska tonight. As a result, expect steady rain for much
of Bristol Bay and the Middle Kuskokwim Valley for the remainder
of the afternoon through tonight and into Thursday. Rain becomes
more showery across the Bristol Bay area for Thursday while areas
such as Lime Village to the western Alaska Range continue to deal
with a fairly steady rain through much of the day. For the
Kuskokwim Delta, expect only isolated rain showers as the bulk of
the energy with this wave and moisture associated with it remains
to the east of the Kilbuck/Kuskokwim Mountains. Rainfall amounts
of 0.2-0.6" are anticipated across much of the area with locally
0.6"+.

Next, another upper level trough/shortwave moving southeastward
Thursday morning will bring an increase in the coverage of showers
across the Kuskokwim Delta. Areas along the Kuskokwim Delta Coast
will be the first to experience any showers from this feature
overnight/Thursday morning. As this shortwave continues moving
across Southwest, expect showers to increase further inland for
areas such as Bethel for Thursday afternoon/evening. As this
continues into the Middle Kuskokwim Valley and Bristol Bay area,
expect showers to continue through a good portion of the day on
Friday.

A weak upper level ridge is expected to build in behind
this trough that will bring cooler conditions along with some
partial clearing Friday afternoon into the first half of the
weekend. The axis of the trough is expected to pass through the
Delta overnight Thursday. As a result, with 850 mb temperatures
ranging from 0 to -4 Celsius across the Kuskokwim Delta for Friday
morning, expecting temperatures to be able to fall into upper 30s
to near 40 degrees. Bethel's record low for this coming Friday
morning is 34 degrees with the current forecast low of 37 degrees.
Therefore, this will be an unseasonably chilly air mass moving in
for mid August. Stay tuned to the latest forecast to see if this
record gets challenged. Saturday morning is also expected to start
off fairly chilly as well with widespread lows around 40 degrees.
There is a chance records may be at risk for Saturday morning as
well. This is all highly dependent on the sky coverage as well as
winds. Light and variable winds and clear skies would be more
favorable for the colder outcome.

This transient upper level ridge continues spreading eastward
across interior Southwest for Saturday providing for a fairly
nice day with practically all of the area remaining quiet and
dry. Temperatures at 850mb are expected to warm throughout the day
to +2 to +6 degrees Celsius providing for a nice rebound in
surface temperatures into the mid to upper 50s possibly even near
60 degrees for interior areas.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Saturday afternoon)...

A quiet and benign pattern is expected to continue for much of the
Bering through the forecast period as surface high pressure
remains in control. A few weak shortwaves embedded in the flow
aloft may allow for occasional rain showers tonight through
Thursday night especially the eastern Bering and the Pribilofs
area. The only other item of note will be a surface low pressure
system to the south of the Western and Central Aleutians that will
slowly meander northward late Friday afternoon through Saturday.
Associated with this low is expected to be mostly small craft
advisory winds and periods of rain.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Saturday through Monday)...

The marine forecast will be relatively quiet except for a few
areas experiencing small craft thresholds over the western Gulf
and north of Nunivak Island between Saturday and Sunday. A North
Pacific low could bring small craft conditions across the Aleutian
Chain and Bering Sea between Saturday and Monday, with seas up to
7 to 9 ft accompanying this system. Low clouds and stratus will
persist as the ridge of high pressure remains over the Bering
through Monday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Sunday through
Wednesday)...

Model solutions now favor light rainfall for the weekend and
Monday as the dome of high pressure from the Bering shifts from
west to east across Southwest through Southcentral and the Gulf
into Monday morning. Tropical moisture from a North Pacific low
following behind the ridge axis could bring light to moderate
showers over the eastern Aleutians and mainly light rain through
AKPEN and Bristol Bay starting Sunday afternoon through Monday
afternoon. On Tuesday, an upper level trough drapes below the Y-K
Delta and Southwest Coast bringing light rain across Southwest
and Southcentral through Wednesday afternoon.

Farther west, an upper low from the North Pacific moves closer to
the western Aleutians on Sunday, which could be the next main
weather producer for the midweek. Unfortunately, models start
losing their handle on this next system at the same time these
solutions hints for more rain and stronger winds. Clearly, there
is a lot of uncertainty here, so will take another closer look at
future models on where this next system will end up.
