Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The synoptic pattern across the Alaska region continues to evolve
rather slowly, with a broad, stacked low continuing to drift
across the eastern gulf. A pocket of elevated instability near
this low is supporting intermittent thunderstorm activity
southwest of Yakutat this morning, pivoting south and west into
the central Gulf within the easterly flow north of the low
center. A narrow ridge axis envelopes the Gulf low to the north,
arcing along the AKPen and into Southcentral as the pattern
begins to take on more of a weak Rex Block formation. Much of
Southcentral has finally managed to clear out under this ridge as
subsidence and warming have finally won out against the low,
shallow cloud deck that had been in place over much of the Mat-Su
valleys until yesterday afternoon. The only exception is near the
western Alaska Range, where upper level cirrus is attempting to
intrude in from the Southwest.

Most of the more active conditions continue out in the western
areas. A series of shortwaves continue to eject from a deep
longwave trough across the Bering along and north of a slow-moving
frontal boundary sprawled out from the Central Aleutians to the
Y-K Delta near the surface. The leading wave of the group is
aiding in gradual deepening of a low sitting along the frontal
axis just off to the west of the Pribilof Islands, with the low's
wind field now slowly strengthening into the small craft range.
The front itself continues to tap into the deep, moist fetch of
southerly flow continuing over the Eastern Bering/Aleutians,
bringing steady rain into much of the northern Bering and Y-K
Delta this morning.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in very good synoptic agreement over the course of
the next few days. Agreement has come into better alignment for
the track of the maturing/occluding low lifting into the northern
Bering through Monday, with all solutions recurving the center
into northeastern Russia by Monday night. Agreement has likewise
improved for the new low expected to develop tonight near the
Western Aleutians on the frontal boundary that will be left
trailing in place behind the initial departing system. The most
significant forecast challenge for the east side will weigh
heavily on the fate of several small, easterly impulses that will
work in from British Columbia and the Yukon from late Monday into
Tuesday. Depending on timing and the degree of destabilization
out ahead of each perturbation, these waves will have the
potential to kick off convection as they move across over parts of
Southcentral, especially during the Monday and Tuesday afternoon
periods.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...
More sunshine is in store for Sunday and Monday for much of the
area. Southcentral is caught between a vertically stacked low over
the eastern Gulf of AK and a broad, positively tilted trough over
the Bering. In between, some weak ridging will continue to build
over the mainland today. At the surface, this will mean some mid
and high clouds likely over the Western Susitna, marine
stratus/fog for Kodiak and the northern Gulf, and sunny skies for
the rest of the mainland. Temperatures will respond accordingly
today with highs in the low to mid 70s for most areas with 80s in
the Copper River Basin. Coastal locations will see sea breezes
once again today, so slightly cooler high temperatures will
prevail in those spots.

Monday will be mostly sunny for the mainland as well. An extension
of the North American Ridge will nudge over our area. This will
lead to incredibly warm 850mb (5,000') temperatures of nearly 18C
degrees. In places that keep sunshine through the day, this could
lead to some of the warmest temperatures of the summer. We have
trended high temperatures up for Monday afternoon, but they may
need to go up higher still. By late day Monday, some weak energy
will round the periphery of the stacked low in the Gulf. This
energy will cross from AlCan border moving east to west into the
Copper River Basin. It could provide enough lift to produce some
thunderstorms. Then, overnight Monday into Tuesday, a much deeper
synoptic wave will plow through bringing a widespread swath of
moderate rain from Chitina through Valdez.

The synoptic pattern won't change much going into Tuesday. High
pressure over the interior portion of the state will build south
as the wave dives south of the Gulf. This should result in another
warm and dry day to start. There are some signs that weak energy
could trickle in helping to create the potential for showers and
thunderstorms. With northeast steering flow, this could impact
many of the population centers Tuesday evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A low moves northward across the Gulf before pivoting northwest
towards eastern Russia late Monday night, its front stalls
briefly over the Kuskokwim Delta. There is a decent jet support as
well as a tropical influence, allowing for another day of rather
persistent rainfall from Bethel to the coast, including Nunivak
Island. A digging trough dips into the Bering later this
afternoon, helping to amplifying a ridge building over much of the
State through Tuesday morning. The heart of the ridge is located
out over the Yukon Territory, eventually extending into Southwest
Alaska, generating clearer skies, drier conditions, and warmer
temperatures through mid-week. The exception here will be the
Kuskokwim Delta Coast who will remain under the influence of the
trough.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

A low tracking across the Bering towards eastern Russia over the
next couple days stalls its front across the central/eastern
Bering, producing a band of persistent rain showers and small
craft winds along it. Flow is mainly southerly on the eastern side
of the low, and northerly on the western side. Additionally, winds
are strongest along the frontal boundary, with locally stronger
winds through the gaps and passes of the Southern AKPen and
Eastern Aleutians. Another system developing within a digging
trough pinwheels along the outskirts of said trough, then pushes
into the Bering out of the south. The main impacts will be periods
of moderate-to-heavy rainfall along the Southern AKPen to
Unalaska by mid-week.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...

Confidence is increasing on the potential for a rather strong
storm in the Bering Sea during the Tuesday to Thursday timeframe.
There is good agreement across model guidance that an area of
low pressure will develop to the southwest of Dutch Harbor Monday
night. This low will slowly move northward while maintaining
strength before quickly intensifying in the central Bering Tuesday
night through Wednesday. Guidance is showing a sub 980 mb low
pressure system in the northwest Bering Wednesday afternoon.
Therefore, expect high end gale force winds with increasing wave
heights (15-20 ft) as well. The worst conditions will be Tuesday
night through Wednesday, with much of the strongest winds over
the Bering Sea offshore zones.

.LONG TERM DISCUSSION (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through
Saturday)...

The long term forecast period looks to primarily feature an upper
level ridge over the interior of Alaska with troughing over the
Bering Sea with uncertainty in regards to individual features. As
a result, expect mostly benign sensible weather over the mainland
of Alaska though this time period. The Bering, on the other hand,
is expected to remain under the influence of a low pressure
system especially through the first half of the forecast period.
Due to this, its front may move onshore bringing some rain showers
into Southwest Alaska for Thursday through Friday as the front
tries to undercut the upper ridge. Across the Bering Sea and
Aleutians, expect continued unsettled weather and breezy/windy
conditions through the forecast period. Southcentral looks to
remain largely quiet through the first half of the forecast period
until this front brings some increasing moisture for Friday and
Saturday that may allow for rain showers, especially across higher
terrain. An upper level trough dipping south from northeast
Alaska looks to merge with the frontal system near the Alaska
Range Friday night into Saturday leading to the potential for
more widespread rain shower activity during this timeframe.
