Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Morning satellite shows the state of Alaska remains under a rex
block pattern with high pressure ridging southwestward from Fort
Yukon into Minchumina and an ongoing vertically stacked low
located over the Gulf. Between these two features is an area of
east to northeasterly flow with areas of scattered showers noted
on radar that extend from Prince William Sound southwestward into
the Alaska Peninsula. An easterly wave of low pressure is just
entering into the Copper River Basin with additional light rain
and increasing clouds per moisture channel imagery. To the west,
an area of low pressure remains positioned over the northern
Bering with a ridge of high pressure noted over the Western
Aleutians. Northwesterly gap winds 20-25 knots are persisting over
the Eastern Aleutians beneath a 90+ knot jet streak which
stretches eastward and immediately south of the aforementioned
Gulf low.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model agreement remains unchanged and in good agreement with large
scale features. Discrepancies begin to appear when looking at the
finer details. The main concerns for Friday entail the speed at
which the easterly wave, currently moving into the Copper Basin,
moves across South Central and how quickly associated rainfall
arrives to the region. As has been the case over the past couple
of days, the higher resolution models are a tad quicker with
bringing shower activity as well as further south. This would
favor heavier rainfall across the Chugach Mountains and the
Talkeetnas. Meanwhile, the large scale models are slower and
further north, also with less precipitation. High confidence
exists in rain over Southcentral; however, confidence decreases
with exact timing and location of the more substantial rain. All
in all, can expect generally cool, wet conditions with cloudy
conditions.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Turnagain winds have diminished this morning but are
expected to redevelop later this evening, perhaps to a lesser
degree. Much of Friday should remain dry with VFR conditions
extending into the afternoon and early evening hours, although
areas of light rain could develop at times with brief MVFR
conditions. One caveat will be if any heavy showers develop which
would reduce ceilings even more. Confidence in the intensity of
rain later this evening and exact placement is average to below
average.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Saturday Night)...

An area of dense fog has developed across Kachemak Bay, including
Homer and Seldovia this morning. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect
for that area until Noon. Please use caution when traveling
around the area this morning until the fog lifts by midday.

A strong easterly wave will cross over Southcentral through the
day today. The wave is not being particularly well resolved,
especially with when any associated rain starts and how far south
the rain gets. There is good agreement that the greatest rainfall
amounts will be the farther north you go, so the Copper River
Basin and Susitna Valley are likely to pick up the most rain from
this feature through Saturday.

Expect much more cloud cover area-wide today due to the
persistence of the low over the Gulf and this easterly wave for
inland areas. The Gulf low will continue to sink southward into
the North Pacific tonight. Thus, Kodiak should finally get a break
at least from the steadier rain and lower ceilings tonight. It
appears that if steadier rain spreads south into Anchorage it will
be overnight tonight into Saturday morning. Likely probabilities
of rain have been added to the forecast for tonight in Anchorage.

During the day on Saturday, the wave will stall out over the Cook
Inlet region, which means rain will continue through the day
everywhere, including across the Kenai Peninsula. Due to the wave
weakening, rainfall rates will diminish with time. Drizzle,
sprinkles, and overall wet conditions will persist through
Saturday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Friday and
Saturday)...

Quiet weather is expected over Southwest Alaska as a shortwave
ridge builds in from the west. Rain over southern Bristol Bay this
morning should taper off later this morning as the shortwave
producing the uplift moves south of the area. Fog has begun to
show up from Iliamna to Port Heiden with greater development
possible near King Salmon after the rain moves through. Otherwise,
onshore flow over the Kuskokwim Delta will bring the typical
overcast weather, though a few breaks in the clouds are possible
due to diurnal heating and a slight increase in instability.
Expect an increase in temperatures over the next two days for
inland areas with highs approaching 70 over the Middle Kuskokwim
Valley. Diurnally driven instability will likely bring a few
showers to the Western Alaska Range each afternoon though
parameters appear too weak to support thunderstorms.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Friday
and Saturday)...

A shortwave ridge of high pressure will move west to east over
the Bering through the forecast period. This will lead to the
typical fog and low stratus throughout the region. A series of
shortwaves will follow the ridge, bringing rain to the Central
and Western Aleutians on Saturday. Westerly winds up to 30 kts
will accompany the stronger of the two shortwaves from Shemya to
Adak.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

There is good confidence in the development of localized gale
force winds with a low south of the Aleutians through Sunday
morning. Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning, expect winds
less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft. By Tuesday afternoon, a
developing western Bering low produces the potential for
localized gale force winds over the northern Bering.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through
Thursday)...

The extended timeframe continues to look rather murky as
operational models struggle with the handling of the breakdown of
a Rex Block over the southern mainland and Gulf between Sunday
and Tuesday. Another key uncertainty that will greatly impact the
pattern evolution for the remainder of the week involves the
track and timing of a shortwave that will likely be crossing the
southern Bering and into the AKPen or Eastern Aleutians by the
start of the forecast period on Monday. The operational GFS
attempts to move this wave as a closed upper low much farther
east than other solutions back into the Gulf, essentially re-
establishing the blocking pattern and imparting continued cool
and wet southeasterly flow into Southcentral through the first
half of the week. The EC/Canadian suggest the upper low is more
likely to become stalled farther west over the North Pacific,
allowing instead for a developing longwave ridge to amplify into
the southern mainland. This would result in a much drier and
somewhat warmer outlook for the first few days of the workweek
for Southcentral and perhaps even Southwest AK. These scenarios
both have some support from corresponding ensembles, although
run- to- run continuity for the ensemble means has also recently
been rather poor at the extended timeframe.

In short,there are quite a few details in flux that will have key
impacts on the sensible weather next week, and additional
forecast changes during this period are likely as the synoptic
pattern becomes better resolved.
