.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

In the upper levels, a broad longwave trough is over the Bering.
Embedded shortwaves are circulating around the trough, including
one over Southwest Alaska and a stronger one over the Pribilofs.
At the base of the trough, a 100 kt zonal jet streak is
paralleling the Aleutians from Shemya to the Alaska Peninsula.
This is causing the upper level flow to become southwesterly
across Southcentral, drawing in plentiful Pacific moisture.

Radar across the area shows widespread rain moving across
Southcentral and Bristol Bay this morning. Across Bristol Bay and
the southern Kenai Peninsula, some of that rain has embedded
stronger shower activity. The 12Z Anchorage sounding shows the
atmosphere is almost completely saturated from the ground all the
way to the tropopause. As such, any small atmospheric disturbance
will be able to produce localized rain.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in excellent agreement through late Thursday night
on the large scale. The models are struggling with the timing and
intensity of the rain across the southern mainland as the front
and associated Pacific moisture produce rain across the area. For
the Anchorage area and typical downslope locations, there is
significant disagreement on the magnitude of the downsloping on
Wednesday into Thursday. The main ramification of this is how
much rain is seen. While confidence in these smaller details is
low, the overall forecast of continued cloudy and rainy conditions
is very high confidence.

.AVIATION...
PANC...MVFR ceilings will be predominant today as Pacific moisture
continues to flow northward from the Gulf. This will cause light
rain to continue off-and-on throughout the TAF period. There is
little agreement on if and when there will be significant
improvement or deterioration in the conditions, as the weather
pattern will remain stagnant. Light winds will persist throughout
the TAF period.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Thursday Night)...

A decaying and slow-moving front is moving across Southcentral
this morning, causing widespread light rain all across the Cook
Inlet region, and beginning to spread into Prince William Sound as
well. Light rain will persist in all of these areas for the rest
of today, with only very slow changes in the large scale weather
pattern. A Gulf low is forecast to form off the coast of Kodiak
Island this afternoon, which will intensify the rain along the
coast, and also shift the predominant wind direction out of the
southeast. This should cause the rain to gradually diminish from
Kenai-Soldotna north through the afternoon, while the rain will
be enhanced in the coastal mountains and in Kodiak, Seward and
Whittier. The influx of upper level support in the form of a
negatively tilted shortwave trough will re-enhance the rainfall
across inland areas from Anchorage and the Mat-Su this evening
into tonight.

By Thursday, the pattern will become disjointed, as the Gulf low
and associated upper level low separate from the main longwave
trough that will remain stationary along the west coast.
Meanwhile, an upper level high over northeast Alaska will build
southward across Southcentral. This evolution of the upper level
pattern will make for continued rain, clouds, and cool weather
along the Gulf and coastal communities, while inland areas,
including Anchorage the Mat-Su, and the Copper River Basin will
clear out and dry out, especially by the second half of the day on
Thursday. The dry weather will persist for the Cook Inlet region
into Friday as the Gulf low very slowly weakens and drifts
southeastward away from mainland Alaska. However, a strong
easterly wave moving in between the upper level high to the north
and the Gulf low will cause rain to redevelop across the Copper
River Basin as early as late Thursday night. The rain could be
heavy at times, as it will be working with plentiful moisture
which will remain from the rainfall going on now across
Southcentral. Expect the heaviest rain to build southwestward from
the Copper River Basin into Anchorage and the Mat-Su on Friday
afternoon, though there remains some disagreement on the timing.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The synoptic setup will continue to push a maritime airmass into
Southwest AK through the short term. This sustained flow from the
Bering Sea will keep conditions cool, cloudy and moist. Upper
level troughing directly over Southwest AK will keep weather
unsettled as well. A couple of shortwave troughs - one today and
another tomorrow - will provide more defined areas of rain as they
move through. A sustained pattern such as this one allows models
to lock in well, so high confidence in this cool, wet pattern
persisting for the next few days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

General westerly flow will shift to northwest tomorrow and a weak
system moves into the Western Bering Thursday night into Friday.
Otherwise, weather is very quiet which is typical for this time of
year. Low stratus with some areas of fog will persist over much of
the Bering. More defined weather systems like the low moving in
Thursday night will provide more defined areas of rain. High
confidence in the forecast with such a quiet pattern.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

A West Bering low moves to the Northeast of the Pribilof Islands
through Sunday morning. Its front moves across the Bering, with
gusty winds less than gale force in the Southern Bering and seas
less than 10 feet. Forecast confidence improves through the
period.

A Western Gulf low exits the Gulf by Saturday morning. Gusty
winds will occur across the Northern Gulf Coast, with gale force
winds from Montague Island to Kodiak Island Friday, diminishing
Saturday. Seas less than 10 feet.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Saturday through Tuesday)...

A Rex Block is expected to develop across Southcentral/Southwest
Alaska and the Gulf during the extended period as upper level
ridging extends across the interior Alaskan mainland with an upper
low over the Gulf. The orientation of the upper ridge and upper
low will allow for east-northeasterly flow aloft across the area.
Deterministic and ensemble guidance shows easterly waves of upper
level energy moving through Southcentral Saturday through Tuesday.
These easterly upper level waves will bring more clouds, cooler
temperatures and a greater chance of precipitation to Southcentral
during this period. Southwest will have more sunshine, warmer
temperatures and drier weather than Southcentral as the upper
level high will continue to extend across Southwest Alaska. An
unsettled but benign weather pattern is expected for the
Bering/Aleutians as a couple of weak low pressure systems move
through the area Saturday through Tuesday. These lows will bring
rain to parts of the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands. Winds will
remain below gale force with no high seas expected.
