Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level high is in place over western Alaska, which
translates to the surface as well. Longwave troughing exists in
the western Bering, with a closed low at 500 mb. It is reflected
at the surface as a 996 mb surface low with a weak front slowly
moving through the Western Aleutians. This is making for cloudy
and rainy conditions there. The rest of the Bering continues to be
enveloped in low stratus that is often present under high
pressure. So stratus is also lingering in Southwest AK, trapped
directly under the high pressure center. Satellite shows this is
in the process of burning off. Meanwhile, Southcentral AK has fair
weather with dry, northerly flow on the front side of the high.
Some convection is beginning to develop on the south side of the
Eastern Alaska Range.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue to handle the synoptic pattern well. There are
some minor differences in the details but there's not enough
difference to affect confidence in the forecast models. Models
traditionally do well locking on to slow moving high pressure
systems like the one in place, so we expect to maintain high
confidence in numerical guidance through the short term.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Sunshine and warmth return to Southcentral Alaska as upper level
ridging builds across the area. Temperatures will reach the upper
70sF to near 80F this afternoon across the Matanuska Valley,
Susitna Valley and parts of the Copper River Basin. Temperatures
will continue to trend warmer on Friday with highs reaching the
low to middle 80s across the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys with
upper 70s to near 80 across the Copper Basin. These warm
temperatures and sunny skies will continue through the weekend.

Stronger diurnal heating from the lack of cloud cover increases
the chance for convection. Stability indices show negative Lifted
Index (LI) values across much of the Susitna Valley, Copper Basin,
Alaska and Talkeetna Ranges this afternoon, Friday afternoon and
Saturday afternoon. Negative LI values indicate a strong potential
for convection. GOES-17 Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB in
conjunction with GOES GLD shows isolated thunderstorms moving
southward across the northern half of the Copper Basin this
afternoon. These storms however, are decaying near the central
Copper Basin.

Another thing this upper level ridging will bring to the area is
the overall lack of wind. No strong winds are expected in the
forecast period.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Thursday
through Sunday)...

Subsidence under a ridge of high pressure aloft provided another
nice day across the interior valleys with mostly sunny skies and
warmer temperatures. Meanwhile, low stratus will return this
evening along the coast and will likely persist through the
weekend. Areas of patchy fog were added again into the forecast
for the Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay tonight, with conditions
improving by Friday morning. A weak shortwave is expected to move
over the northern half of the state by late Friday night and
slightly weaken the ridge on Saturday with some cloud cover over
the region. By Sunday, the ridge will reestablish itself and
provide summer-like weather through the rest of the weekend.

&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Thursday through Sunday)...

A ridge of high pressure aloft is helping to maintain areas of
low clouds across much of the Aleutians and Bering Sea today.
Areas of patchy fog were added into the forecast for the eastern
Bering tonight and Friday morning. Additionally, gusty northerly
winds will continue funneling through gaps and passes along the
AKPEN the rest of today through Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, a frontal boundary associated with a Kamchatka low
provided periods of showers and southerly gap winds along the
western Aleutians today. Lingering moisture and precipitation will
lift northward over the Bering tonight with southerly gap winds
subsiding by Friday morning. After a brief break, a secondary
front will provide another round of moderate to heavy rain showers
with a return of strong, southerly gaps winds across the Aleutian
Chain and Bering Sea Friday afternoon through Sunday. A series of
upper level waves embedded in the moist, southwesterly flow aloft
will keep unsettled weather ongoing over the entire forecast area
through early next week.

&&.MARINE (Days 3 through 5:Sunday through Monday)...

Expect winds less than 25 kts and seas less than 7 ft for the Day
3 through 5 period for the Gulf Of Alaska, Prince William Sound,
and Cook Inlet. However out west, there is a low in the Bering
that will generate some small craft to possibly low end gale
force winds. The development of enhanced winds through gaps and
passes in the Aleutians will be closely monitored.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Sunday through
Thursday)...

At the onset of the longterm forecast period, the models are in
decent agreement regarding the major synoptic features. There is
solid agreement regarding the upper level ridging over mainland
AK and troughing over the Bering. This means continued fair
weather and warm temperatures through the weekend for Southcentral
and into the beginning of the work week. There is persistent
cyclonic flow over the Bering and Aleutians which will keep active
weather with clouds and showery/rainy conditions. Southwest
Alaska is caught in the middle, but ridging and fair weather
should still predominate Saturday before rain moves in Sunday. By
Wednesday there will be a surface low in the Gulf Of Alaska and a
large dome of high pressure over the North Pacific with a ridge
axis building into the Western Bering.
