Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The longwave trough remains nearly unmoved from yesterday, extending
from the Arctic to the Kenai Peninsula and then southward into
the Pacific to about 35N. This is a very strong trough for this
time of year with cold upper level temperatures along with it. The
12Z Anchorage sounding showed 500 mb temperatures an unseasonably
chilly -26C. A jet streak is running from north to south from the
Chukchi Sea through Bristol Bay in the strong gradient behind the
trough and ahead of a building ridge in the western Bering Sea.
This feature can bee seen on GOES-17 satellite driving quickly
southward along this path. This jet streak represents the
separation between the warmer air building in from the west and
the colder air to the east under the trough. This will be the
path the next upper level low takes to traverse from the Chukchi
Sea tonight into Southwest Alaska Friday and into the weekend.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
There have been some shifts in the models over the past day that
will have a significant impact on the forecast for the Gulf of
Alaska region. The GFS and ECMWF models have both moved toward a
solution that will bring the low moving into the Gulf Friday into
Saturday both farther west and stronger for those days. This will
bring some persistent and/or heavy rain to parts of the north Gulf
coast and Kodiak Island. Previously, the heaviest rainfall looked
like it would occur east of Cordova, but that area now should
include the coastal areas from Cordova southwestward through
Kodiak.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...What is now a relatively weak coastal ridge and Turnagain
Arm jet will strengthen Friday out ahead of a front entering the
western Gulf. Deep layer southeast flow combined with quite a bit
of instability in place favors gusty southeast winds persisting at
the airport for most, if not the entire TAF forecast period. If
winds were to lighten up it would be between 12Z and 18Z.

Despite the strong cross-barrier flow, dynamics aloft with an
approaching storm on Friday look impressive. Short-waves will
eject out of a trough over Southwest Alaska into Cook Inlet and
toward Anchorage. Thus, expect rain to develop Friday afternoon
and ceilings to lower to around 5000 feet. While it would be
difficult for ceilings to lower any more in this flow regime,
there could be some embedded heavier rain, with potential for
visibility to briefly be reduced to MVFR.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Tonight
through Sat evening)...

The broad longwave trough has shifted eastward today over the
Alaska Range and into Southcentral. As a result, the persistent
cool, wet pattern continues with another round of light to
moderate showers developing this afternoon from eastern Kenai
Peninsula north across the Mat-Su Valleys, and coastal areas of
Prince William Sound. These showers are in response to upper level
waves embedded in the moist, southerly flow ahead of the trough
and moving from Cook Inlet to the southern mainland as well as the
north Gulf coast.

Thereafter, attention turns to an unseasonably, strong upper
level low and associated surface front moving from Southwest
Alaska into the Gulf on Friday. Gusty, southeasterly gap winds
will develop on Friday afternoon out ahead of the front and
continue through Saturday morning over Turnagain Arm, Knik River
Valley, and the Copper River Valley in response to a coastal
ridge and pressure gradient strengthening. As the front continues
moving toward the north Gulf coast, expect additional rain along
Southcentral coast through Sunday evening. The deep fetch of
tropical moisture and precipitation will bring steady moderate to
heavy rain over Kodiak Island and the southern coast of the Kenai
Peninsula. The rest of the moisture and rain will be concentrated
from Cook Inlet north across the Susitna Valley and along PWS.

As the low slowly becomes detached from the mean flow of the jet
stream and meanders over the western Gulf, steady rain will be
focused along the coast, with showers tapering off further inland
by Sunday with the help of the downslope easterly flow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

At the onset of the forecast period the longwave trough extends
from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf Of Alaska. There are multiple
shortwaves embedded in the upper trough. This energy will sustain
widespread precipitation across Southwest Alaska this evening and
on Friday. Currently there is a surface low north of Savoonga and
the models drop the surface low southeastward near Hooper Bay
tomorrow morning. By Friday evening the surface low will be near
Bethel. Saturday morning the surface low will be over Bristol Bay.
Lingering showers anticipated Saturday. Sunday an upper level
ridge axis will build into Hooper Bay towards Galena. Drier
conditions are anticipated Sunday. Although its possible that
wrap around moisture from a closed low south of the AKPEN could
produce showers over the AKPEN and Lake Clark National Park.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

There is a weak ridge axis over the Western and Central Bering.
Also there is a closed low over the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka
that is kicking out weak shortwaves. Early this morning an intense
thunderstorm developed over the Bering just northwest of Dutch
Harbor and tracked into the North Pacific - which is very
unusual. Overall, the pattern looks benign but the jet will be
crossing the Eastern Bering this evening which is where the
weather will be most active.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

The expected location of a Gulf storm has shifted westward, which
will maintain stronger winds across the Gulf waters for a longer
period of time. While there could be additional shifting of the
storm track, we are getting close enough that confidence is
increasing in area of greatest impact. Thus, expect widespread
gale force winds and seas of 12 to 18 ft across the northern to
western Gulf (including Shelikof Strait) on Sunday. Winds will
then diminish Sunday night and Monday as the storm slowly weakens,
while remaining parked over the southern Gulf. Meanwhile,
conditions across the Bering Sea, Aleutians, and Southwest Alaska
waters look quiet.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Monday through Thursday)...

A broad, slow-moving upper level low over the Gulf of Alaska will
remain in the narrative through the middle of next week. This is a
typical "easterly wave" set-up for southern Alaska. It's too far
out in time to identify specific short-waves or time periods, but
there is potential for rain at any given time Monday through
Wednesday across Southcentral. In addition, a weak thermal trough
will set up over interior sections of Southcentral and Southwest
Alaska. This will serve as the focus for diurnal showers, and
possibly thunderstorms. Bottom line, the pattern will continue to
favor mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain. The upper level
low does look like it will finally exit toward Southeast Alaska
late in the week, with potential for warmer and drier conditions
across southern Alaska.

Over the Bering, a Northwest Pacific low will transit east and
near the Aleutian Chain Monday afternoon through Wednesday, but it
looks weak with benign weather. A more significant storm looks to
enter the picture Wednesday night through Thursday, tracking
across the western Bering and Aleutians. As is typical this far
out in time, model guidance differs on the track and strength of
this low and forecast confidence is low.
