Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A ridge extends from the Gulf of Alaska to just west of the
Alaska Range and into the western Interior of the state today.
This stable airmass is keeping some of the coastal stratus around
along the north Gulf coast and parts of Cook Inlet. This stable
atmosphere is also keeping any convection from building this
afternoon over the area. The only exception might be from Wrangell
Mountains eastward, but even there it should not be anything more
than some showers over the mountains.

A fairly strong low for this time of year is over the Central
Aleutians this afternoon with a front wrapped around the low and
stretching from the northern Bering Sea to over the Alaska
Peninsula. Gales force winds are ahead of this front in parts
of the Bering Sea and over the Alaska Peninsula.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models remain in very good synoptic agreement through the weekend
leading to high forecast confidence.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. There is a
good chance southeast/Turnagain Arm winds return Thu evening, but
the exact timing remains in question.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Wednesday night through Saturday)...

High pressure has set into Southcentral AK, with clear skies and
warming conditions due to the ridge being directly overhead.
However, some sea stratus is still managing to hang on along the
coast. High pressure will be the influencing system tomorrow, with
it being the hottest and driest day during this system. The
warmest area will be the Copper River Basin where temperatures
will rise to the low 80s in valley locations.

Unfortunately, this all will be short lived as our ridge of high
pressure is transient and an incoming low will not allow it to
set up for an extended stay of summer. The ridge axis will shift
to the northeast late tomorrow and leave us on its upstream side,
allowing weather from a front moving into the Western Gulf to
start moving into our area, starting with Kodiak. Cloud cover
looks like it will start moving in sooner than initially expected,
so we did adjust the cloud cover forecast today. Coastal areas
and the Susitna Valley will be back in cloud cover by Friday
morning, while the Copper Basin stays under the high for a bit
longer. The front itself will move in Friday morning. Models have
come into good agreement on the movement of this front, so there
is high confidence in its arrival. Expect rain along the coast
headed into the weekend and at least a chance of rain in the
Susitna Valley. Some blocking and downsloping from mountains will
occur, but generally expect a return to cooler and cloudy
conditions for the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Saturday)...

A slow moving front extending across the eastern Bering will move
onshore overnight tonight into early Thursday. This will continue
to bring strong and gusty southeast winds along the southwest
coast and through gaps/passes along the AKPen until the front
begins to shear out on Thursday afternoon. During the same period,
a band of denser cloud cover and showers will move in with the
front from southwest to northeast for all but the interior
Kuskokwim Valley. However, the strong southeast flow will
enhance/suppress precipitation in the usual areas due to
upslope/downslope. Thus, the eastern Kuskokwim Mountains and
windward slopes of the western Alaska range are likely to capture
the highest QPF totals while the Y-K Delta and Bristol Bay stay
quite a bit drier through Thursday.

By Friday, a portion of the large low drifting over the Bering
will lift north into the Southwest as a deep, positively- tilted
upper level trough moves through. This will bring a surge of even
cooler low level temperatures and additional moisture across the
entire area, pushing us even further into an already unusually wet
and cool spell. Even many inland locations (such as Iliamna, King
Salmon and Bethel) will be lucky to breach 60F for highs on both
Friday and Saturday, with dense overcast and widespread showers
greatly hampering daytime heating. With the large upper level low
remaining in place over the Bering for the next several days,
there is not yet a clear end in sight for the fall-like weather
through the holiday weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Saturday)...

The unusually strong summertime low that brought widespread gale
force winds, high swells and rain to large portions of the Bering
and Aleutian Chain is now beginning to weaken. The primary
surface low is now long occluded and losing its upper support.
The center is now drifting back across to the Pacific side of the
Aleutian Chain near Atka. Northerly winds wrapping around the
backside of the low over the far western Bering/Aleutians will
quickly subside overnight as the low continues to weaken and drift
southeast. The eastern section of the low's occluded front will
retain a bit more strength through Thursday morning, bringing
steady rain and southeasterly gales to the far eastern Bering and
through gaps and passes along the southern AKPen through early
Thursday afternoon.

By the weekend, the overall pattern should return to a more
typical and benign summertime setup. A sprawling upper level low
with several embedded waves will continue to spin in place over
the Bering aloft as several smaller waves rotate around it. This
will keep intermittent showers around through the start of the
weekend for the Aleutians and the Pribilofs, but winds will be
much calmer overall across the whole region. The next low will
approach the Western Aleutians with another round of rain
spreading east by Saturday evening.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5:  Saturday through Monday)...
Models depict an area of low pressure tracking from the North
Pacific into the Bering Sea on Sunday. This low may have the
potential of low-end gale force winds near the eastern Aleutians
and the Alaska Peninsula. Another area of low pressure will
approach near the western Aleutians on Monday. Although there is
model uncertainty with the track and strength of this low, there
is a potential of gales and elevated seas south of the Aleutian
Chain for early next week. Elsewhere, expect winds less than 35
kts and seas less than 20 ft for days 3 through 5.

LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through
Wednesday)... Looking ahead into the extended forecast, the latest
operational model runs are in decent agreement with the evolution
and progression of the synoptic scale features for the holiday
weekend but diverge in the specific details towards the end of the
period. The general pattern will be a broad longwave trough over
parts of the Bering Sea, Aleutians, and Southwest AK with a ridge
of high pressure aloft over the eastern mainland toward the Brooks
Range. As the ridge shifts east over the AK-Yukon territory this
weekend, a series of shortwaves rounding the base of the trough
coupled with moist, southwest flow will bring continued chances of
cool, cloudy, and wet conditions over the Bering Sea/Aleutians
and the Southwest mainland, with some breaks in between.
Additionally, model solutions are advertising a deep cyclone in
the North Pacific that will move near the western Aleutians /
Bering Sea and then eastward near the Gulf of Alaska into early
next week. There are some differences with the exact timing,
track, and strength of this low with the GFS being a stronger
system and Canadian and EC being weaker. Subsequent model runs
will be needed to iron out the specific details with this
feature.
