Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The pattern remains highly amplified as blocking high pressure
extends from the southwestern CONUS through Northwest Territory.
An upper low over the southern AlCan Border is moving eastward. A
second and much larger low pressure system over the central
Aleutians continues to move eastward. The jetstream remains south
of 50N through 160W then curves northwestward into the northern
Bering Sea, then southeastward into the Gulf of Alaska.

Closer to the surface, radar imagery shows showers moving
northeastward through the Kuskokwim Delta.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Guidance is in good agreement with the placement and intensity of
synoptic scale features at both the surface and in the upper
levels. This good model agreement leads to high forecast
confidence.

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through
3...Today through Fri night)...

An upper level ridge will continue to build over all of
Southcentral today. This will lead to very warm temperatures and
sunny skies making for a gorgeous day. Temperatures are expected
to be in the 60s and 70s with the interior locations such as the
Copper River Basin and the Mat-SU Valleys possibly reaching the
upper 70s today. The back side of the upper level trough is
expected to move through the southeast portion of the Copper River
Basin near McCarthy this afternoon and evening keeping conditions
a little unsettled for one more day. Some showers are expected
over the Wrangells and the nearby Chugach Mountains just to the
south. One of these showers may move off the mountains and bring a
quick shower to the McCarthy region. Also, expect the typical
afternoon sea breezes in the local effect areas. Whittier has been
gusting upwards of 30 to 35 mph this morning but expect these
winds to subside as the morning progresses. Areas of fog are also
expected through the morning hours for Cordova and surrounding
areas before mixing out for the afternoon.

Much of Southcentral will squeak out another gorgeous day on
Thursday as the axis of the upper level ridge moves over the
Copper River Basin. Temperatures on Thursday across Southcentral
will again be in the 70s with low 80s expected for places like
Gulkana and Glennallen to Chitina. Sea breezes are expected once
again in the typical local effect areas for Thursday. Areas of fog
was also placed into the forecast for the Cordova region again for
Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

High clouds will begin to stream northward Thursday, though,
expect these clouds to mostly remain over the Kenai Peninsula for
much of the day. This will be the result of a frontal system
moving northward from south of Kodiak. Regarding Kodiak, expect
one more dry day before clouds increase later this evening through
the overnight hours as the aforementioned front approaches.
Expect increasing winds (mostly small crafts with gale force gusts
over the marine areas) and periods of rain for much of Kodiak
Island from early Thursday through Thursday night. Right now,
expecting around 0.75-0.9" of rain around the Kodiak City area.
This front will continue moving northward spreading rain up the
Kenai Peninsula including Seward Thursday evening through Friday.

As this front moves northward, expect the Turnagain Arm to pick up
and bend into West Anchorage Thursday evening through Friday
morning. It may then bend down the Cook Inlet region Friday before
bending back into West Anchorage Friday evening. Expecting a
general 15-20 mph wind with gusts as high as 30 mph. The Knik
River wind is also expected Thursday evening through Friday
evening that may impact Palmer. The Copper River wind is also
expected to pick up as this front moves through. The strongest
winds for the Copper River Basin are expected Friday afternoon and
evening where gusts may approach 30 mph. Expect most of the
precipitation to be over the Prince William Sound area and western
Cook Inlet with the typical downslope areas experiencing
downsloping, though, a few showers cannot be completely ruled out
for the Anchorage Bowl and the interior areas of the Kenai
Peninsula.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Friday)...

A front approaching the coast today is spreading quite a bit of
high cloud cover over nearly all of Southwest Alaska this morning.
The cloud cover will lower and thicken through the day, which in
turn will keep all but the interior Kuskokwim Valley from warming
into the 70s today. Much of Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim Delta
will hold in the low to mid 60s due to the cloud cover.

The front will move into the coast tonight, with rain developing
after midnight. Strong southeasterly winds will cause the usual
downslope areas along the Alaska Range and the Kuskokwim Mountains
to remain mainly dry. Meanwhile the south and east facing sides of
the Kuskokwim Mountains will have heavier rain due to upsloping.

The front will only very slowly drift northeastward across
Southwest Alaska through Friday, while additional upper level
impulses will move additional Pacific moisture into the region.
Thus, expect a cool, cloudy and rainy pattern across most of the
area (with downslope areas getting the least rain) both Thursday
and Friday. By Friday, highs will struggle to even hit 60 except
in the Lower Kuskokwim Valley. Southeasterly gap winds will gust
up to 50 mph across Lake Iliamna and along the Western Capes from
this afternoon through Thursday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Friday)...

A strong low centered near Atka this morning is causing strong
winds and heavy rain to its east across the Eastern Aleutians and
the Alaska Peninsula this morning. As of 5am, Cold Bay had the
strongest gusts at 68 mph, Akutan got to 63 mph, and Unalaska
gusted to 59 mph. The low and the leading front causing the
strongest winds have now peaked in intensity, and significant
weakening and diminishing of the winds are expected over the rest
of the morning hours today. The front will slow to a crawl along
the Southwest Alaska coast this afternoon, only gradually drifting
inland through Friday. This will keep a steady southeasterly wind
impacting the coastal waters through Friday.

The surface low is tracking west and will move near or over Adak
this afternoon, then will turn around and track east back through
the Eastern Aleutians and reach Bristol Bay by Friday. Between now
and then, the low will gradually weaken, and will become absorbed
into the broad flow by Friday. This will keep areas of rain,
especially in the eastern Bering with the front, and around the
low center. The main low center, in a very weakened state, will
reorganize over the Western Aleutians on Friday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Generally, expect winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft
for the Day 3 through 5 period. The only exception is the
possibility for a stronger low to track from the North Pacific
into the Bering Sea on Sunday. This low may have the potential to
produce gale-force winds near the eastern Aleutians and the
Alaska Peninsula.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

Broad longwave troughing across the Bering Sea will be the
dominant pattern through the long term, with southwest flow over
the mainland favoring a cool, wet Independence Day weekend. On
Saturday, there is good model agreement that a shortwave trough
will be located over Southwest and Southcentral Alaska, pushing
northeast and bringing cooler temperatures and precipitation along
with it. Despite models diverging in the timing and location of
specific features, similar conditions will prevail beyond Saturday
as several shortwaves rotate through the southern side of the
longwave trough. Periods of wet, unsettled weather should be
expected with each one as they pass, with brief respites from the
rain in between.

With this pattern in place, a developing surface cyclone in the
North Pacific may be drawn up into the Bering early next week. The
GFS, which has depicted deeper lows in recent weeks that have
tended to verify, suggests the possibility of gale force winds
through the Aleutians. The Canadian and ECMWF models show a
weaker low, but given the recent performance of the GFS, this
feature is worth watching. On Tuesday, the longwave trough axis
begins to shift eastward into mainland Alaska, keeping
temperatures cool and bringing further precipitation.
