.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The pattern remains highly amplified with blocking high pressure
currently extends northward along the west coast of North America.
An eastward moving upper trough currently extends from Southwest
Alaska into the North Pacific. An upper level low over the Yukon
Delta is currently drifting northwestward. A second low pressure
system over the western Aleutians is slowly moving eastward. The
jetstream remains south of 50N through 145W, then bulges northward
to over central Northwest Territory.

Closer to the surface, radar imagery shows isolated light showers
slowly moving northwestward across the Susitna Valley. Another
area of showers is moving northeastward across the Kuskokwim
Delta.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Guidance remains in good agreement with respect to the placement
and intensity of synoptic scale features at both the surface and
in the upper levels. This high degree of consistency leads to a
high forecast confidence. The biggest area of uncertainty is where
showers will pop up. However, due to the ample cloud cover and
cooler temperatures, these showers are highly unlikely to become
thunderstorms.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Southcentral's weather continues to be driven by a very strong
anomalously strong upper level ridge over western North America
and an upper level low near Hooper Bay. Southcentral remains
caught in the middle of these two systems with southerly flow
remaining prevalent through today. Upper level heights will build
over the region some today that will result in mostly dry
conditions for much of Southcentral. There is fairly widespread
low stratus around much of Southcentral this morning but expect
this to erode heading into this afternoon with sunshine for many
areas, especially valley locations. Any remaining rain shower
activity across the lower Susitna Valley and western Matanuska
Valley is expected to taper off by this afternoon. Otherwise,
expect widespread 50s and 60s with 50s closer to the Gulf Coast
and Kodiak with the 60s for areas further away from the marine
influence. Some areas of the Copper River Basin are expected to
reach 70 degrees this afternoon with some areas even low 70s.

Monday, an upper level disturbance moving northward will bring the
threat for rain showers mainly across the mountainous terrain,
especially the Talkeetna and Wrangell Mountains. The Chugach
Mountains around Anchorage east to near Valdez may also experience
an isolated rain shower or two as well Monday afternoon. A fairly
nice day is expected across the Mat-SU Valleys, Anchorage Bowl,
and Kenai Peninsula Monday as the bulk of the upper level energy
moves to the east of these areas. 850 mb temperatures warm some
more on Monday bringing 70s for inland areas with 60s for the
Matanuska Valley, Anchorage Bowl, and northern Kenai Peninsula.
Also, expect the sea breezes in the typical local effect areas
both days. Instability is minimal for Monday afternoon/evening keeping
the threat for any thunderstorm activity out of the forecast at
this time.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Tuesday)...

Cloudy, cool, and moist conditions will continue across Southwest
Alaska today and Monday. Showers are possible today, especially in
the Kuskokwim Mountains and the Delta. The low north of Nunivak
Island continues to weaken and drift northward away from our
area. This will result in diminishing winds across the Kuskokwim
Delta today. More shower activity is possible Monday afternoon
with additional instability supporting the showers. On Tuesday,
upper level ridging will move in and will allow for both warmer
temperatures and a fair amount of sunshine, that appears likely to
continue into Wednesday. The next front moves in with rain
returning on Thursday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Tuesday)...

The primary weather feature across the Bering for the short-term
will be a large but relatively weak low currently moving across
the Western Aleutians. The center of the low will move east right
along the chain through Monday, after which point it will stall as
a new and far more energetic low takes over. The low over the
Western Aleutians will only produce areas of small craft (25 kt
winds) through Monday night. When the second low moves in and
replaces the first, gales may develop in the leading front across
the Eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula on Tuesday, eventually
spreading as far north as the Pribilofs by Tuesday night. Periods
of moderate rain are likely in these areas in addition to the
winds. Elsewhere across the Bering, clouds will persist for the
foreseeable future.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/ Tuesday through Thursday)...

A Western Aleutian low moves to the South of the Central
Aleutians for Thursday. Forecast confidence is good. Winds ahead
of the low increase, becoming widespread gale force wrapping the
low and extending into the Bering diminishing Thursday. Some local
high end gale force winds possible from Nikolski to the Southern
end of the Alaska Peninsula through Wednesday. Seas to 20 feet
building on the Pacific side of the Eastern Aleutians and Southern
Alaska Peninsula for Wednesday, subsiding. Gale force winds
spread along the Alaska Peninsula to the Western Gulf for
Thursday. Gap winds through the Barren Islands and Sitkinak area
extending into the Gulf Wednesday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through
Saturday)...

The main feature of note at the beginning of the extended period
continues to be an unseasonably large, deep and vertically stacked
low that will likely be traversing portions of the Aleutians and
AKPen for much of the extended timeframe. This may ultimately
bring the large scale pattern full circle to something closely
resembling the synoptic scale setup that was in place over the
past few days, likely entailing another period of anomalously
cool, wet and windy conditions for much of the southern mainland
by the end of the upcoming week. That being said, there is fairly
good model agreement for a shortwave ridge to initially build into
the Southwest by Wednesday. This suggests good potential for a
brief but pronounced warm, dry and clear period to start out from
Wednesday to early Thursday over mainland AK, especially over
Southcentral, before the potential wet/cool pattern flip.

Meanwhile, the story will be very different over the
Bering/Aleutians by midweek, where a North Pacific low as deep as
970-980 mb will be greatly influencing much of the sensible
weather. There is surprisingly good agreement for the strength and
track of the low to begin with, and most operational models bring
this low into the Central Aleutians by Wednesday morning with a
gale force wind field. The GFS is currently most aggressive with
this scenario, wrapping a large swath of gales across nearly the
entire Bering and Aleutian Chain before the main center weakens as
it becomes occluded and stacked by Thursday/Friday. Needless to
say, this will be an impactful system regardless of the exact peak
intensity that will be very atypical for summer, and additional
forecast updates for this period should be closely monitored.

There also remains quite a bit of uncertainty as to how far and
how fast the low will progress eastward as runs up against the
increasingly amplified ridge upstream from Thursday to Saturday.
This leaves lingering questions as to when the pattern transition
back to cool, windy and showery conditions will occur for the
southern mainland as the low's front attempts to make headway into
the Southwest/AKpen near the end of the upcoming workweek.
