.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A long-wave trough remains over the state, with fairly progressive
flow for this time of year. The low which had been sitting south
of Kodiak Island the past couple days has now exited to the
northeast Pacific. However, there is still some influence on
Alaska's weather today. Short-waves on the northern periphery of
the low's circulation are tracking westward across the Gulf and
Southcentral Alaska. Meanwhile, a short-wave trough which crossed
Southwest Alaska is lifting northeastward as it approaches the
opposing flow near the Alaska Range. In between the short-waves
moving west and the one moving east is extensive cloudiness with
areas of very light rain or sprinkles. Geographically, this
extends from the western half of Southcentral westward to Bristol
Bay and the Kuskokwim Valley. Ridging is slowly nudging in from
the east and the west behind the short-waves, so a slow
improvement of ending precipitation and diminishing or thinning
cloud cover is underway.

Out west, a short-wave ridge is centered over the western Aleutians,
with lots of low clouds and fog at the surface. A short-wave
trough is diving down the east side of this ridge across the
eastern Aleutians, producing areas of light rain across the
eastern Bering, Aleutians, and southern Alaska Peninsula. Another
short-wave upstream is digging across the western Bering Sea.
There is a weak surface low associated with this trough, with
small craft winds spreading eastward across the western to
central Bering Sea.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in good agreement with most large scale features. The
one glaring exception is the track of the short-wave currently
over the western Bering Sea as it reaches the southern mainland
this weekend. Specifically, guidance has been all over the place
the last couple days with whether this trough affects Southcentral
on Saturday. A common trend in the last 2 or 3 model runs is to
develop a closed low as the trough reaches Southwest Alaska and
then track the low and trough southeastward down the east side of
a now expanded Aleutian ridge into the western Gulf. If this
solution holds, then Southcentral can expect more ridging aloft
and warmer/more unstable conditions Saturday, especially inland.
Despite continued uncertainty in the details, he latest forecast
will reflect the overall trend in model guidance.

.AVIATION...
PANC...With a weak coastal ridge in place and some sunshine and
warmer temperatures expected this afternoon and evening from
Anchorage to the Mat-Su, conditions are favorable for the
Turnagain Arm wind to bend into the terminal and produce gusty
southeasterlies. The exact onset of the winds is tricky, but
should be by 03z at the latest. Pressure gradients across
Turnagain Arm are on the weak side for these types of events, so
this will be on the low end of these type of events and won't be
ling-lived. Meanwhile, with increasing influence of a ridge
nudging in from the east, generally expect decreasing clouds.
Friday looks benign, with few clouds and a light sea breeze as
surface ridging sets up over the Gulf of Alaska.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Thu
night through Sun)...

A "dirty ridge" exists over Southcentral this evening with a few
weak upper level waves aiding airmass convective showers over the
Susitna Valley and southwestern Kenai Peninsula. Generally
speaking skies will clear from east to west through the weekend
with gradually increasing temperatures. Isolated thunderstorms
will be possible over the eastern Copper River Basin on Friday.
With weak forcing aloft, these storms are expected to remain
mostly stationary, thus raining themselves out after 30 minutes to
an hour after the onset of precipitation. For the rest of the
region, fair weather cumulus is likely to develop over the
mountains and interior valleys, with a few showers possible.

Model consistency drops off sharply on Saturday, particularly in
regards to an easterly wave moving in from the Yukon Territory. If
the more progressive model solutions are to come to fruition, more
widespread thunderstorms are likely over the Copper River Basin.
Storms would also likely initiate over the snow free regions of
the Talkeetna Mountains, moving west to southwest off of the
terrain and into the Mat-Su Valleys. This forecast package takes a
middle of the ground approach, keeping thunderstorms near/over
the mountains with showers over the Valleys.

On Sunday models are in relatively good agreement with high
pressure building overhead. Storms may be possible over the
mountains again, with most valley areas remaining warm and dry.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 3...Tonight
through Sunday afternoon)...

Weak upper level ridging will continue to persist across Southwest
Alaska through the remainder of the afternoon and overnight. As a
result, expect continued breaks in the clouds with the threat for
an isolated rain shower in area, especially Bristol Bay. Any rain
showers, especially in the valley locations are expected to
dissipate in the evening with any remaining showers staying in the
mountains. Due to the weak ridging aloft, expect some areas of
patchy fog mainly along the Kuskokwim and Bristol Bay coastlines
as flow remains onshore.

Friday and Friday night, a strong and potent upper level
disturbance continues moving across the northern Bering Sea. This
system is expected to bring increasing winds to the Kuskokwim
Delta for Friday along with periods of rain, especially for the
Kuskokwim Delta Coast. Conditions become more showery further
inland. Most of the moisture is expected to remain to the west of
Kuskokwim/Kilbuck Mountains, though, a few rain showers may make
it into Bristol Bay and the Middle Kuskokwim Valley. Cooler
temperatures are expected across the Kuskokwim Delta for Friday as
the area remains heavily influenced by cloud cover and the marine
influence of the Bering Sea. Patchy fog is also expected again
overnight Friday into Saturday as another upper level ridge builds
into Southwest.

Saturday night through Sunday, this upper level ridge strengthens
over the area, especially across interior Southwest. As a result,
expect warmer temperatures for these areas with cooler
temperatures across the Kuskokwim Delta where there will be more
marine influence. This pattern looks favorable for fog for
coastal areas Saturday night/Sunday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 3...Tonight
through Sunday afternoon)...

A potent upper level disturbance will continue moving across the
northern Bering through Friday morning. This system has a decent
amount of energy with it, therefore, some isolated thunderstorms
are possible along the western marine zones in the Bering. Some
minor instability is helping to keep this isolated thunderstorm
activity persistent as it moves eastward. Any isolated
thunderstorm activity is expected to dissipate this evening as the
instability lessens. Expect Small Craft Advisory level winds to
traverse much of the Bering weakening to less than 25 kts late
Friday morning.

Otherwise, fairly benign weather continues for much of the Bering
and the Aleutian Island Chain as the area remains under
progressive flow with some weak ridging aloft. As a result,
moisture is trapped beneath the inversion, leading to widespread
low stratus and patchy fog which is expected through the forecast
period.

A low south of the Aleutian Islands will try and nudge northward
towards the marine waters surrounding Adak Saturday night into
Sunday. However, the worst of the weather with this system will
remain over the North Pacific.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)

Perhaps the wave watch model is lagging corresponding data for
the onset of the next strong frontal system approaching the Bering
and the western Aleutians on this forecast package, but will
provide updates on this situation as strong frontal winds could
generate near 10 ft seas across the Aleutians into the middle of
the new week. Elsewhere, Small Craft conditions in response to the
North Pacific low will be short-lived for the Central and Eastern
Aleutians between Sunday and Monday. Depending on the placement
of the surface high and wind speeds over the Gulf of Alaska and
Prince William Sound (PWS), the potential for marine layer will
remain along the northern Gulf coastal area. With high pressure
and some late June sunshine, expect sea breezes to be in full
effect. Overall, the marine forecast is expected to remain
relatively quiet for Sun and Mon.

.LONG TERM (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

Model guidances are on track with the placement of subsident, warm
dry air over the state leading to a high potential of mid-morning
to afternoon mountain showers/isolated thunderstorms over much of
Southcentral, especially the higher terrain. The high
temperatures will continue to soar into the midweek for
Southcentral, meanwhile, high temperatures for Southwest are
expected to be cooler than normal. GFS and GEM share similar
solutions for the upper low south of the Aleutians, setting it
farther south of the Aleutians on Monday. Meanwhile, ECMWF hints
at bringing this upper low closer to the Aleutians through
Tuesday, which could enhanced rain over the eastern Aleutians.

On Wednesday afternoon, the GFS develops a new low to the south
of the main upper low over the northern Bering, then moves the
new low inland and across Kuskokwim Delta through Thursday night.
Unfortunately, GEM and ECMWF are not recognizing this separate new
low, but agree to direct the parent low a bit more northeastward
of the state. All in all, a series of high pressure ridges will
dominate the Bering and along the Gulf of Alaska in the new week
(June 14-18), with an extensive stratiform low cloud deck over
the Bering and Aleutians into the middle of the week.
