A front continues to move north through the Gulf of Alaska. The 
associated 974 mb is moving into the southern Gulf of Alaska. It 
will move to 85 nm south of Chignik this afternoon and then moves 
over Southwest Alaska at 990 mb by Sun afternoon as the front over 
the Gulf weakens.

An elongated front over the Gulf of Alaska weakens as it moves
inland tonight. The associated 972 mb low about 175 nm southwest
of Kodiak Island moves to Bristol Bay Sun afternoon. A 963 mb 
North Pacific low enters the southern Gulf on Mon morning, then 
moves to 90 nm southwest of Seward at 968 mb by Mon afternoon. Its
associated front moves north and across the Gulf through Mon 
afternoon.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska is approaching the
Southcentral Coast with the low center just south of Prince
William Sound. Warm air and cloud cover is pushing inland with
this system. Light precipitation is also attempting to push
inland. However, RADAR currently shows much of it being confined
to the coast and being blocked by the mountains...though
observations inland are starting to show light snow, so it's
finally making it there. This low is being supported in the upper
levels by a 500 mb trough working north through the Gulf. This
trough was a closed low and is weakening as it goes, which is
reflected by the by the low at the surface weakening as well.

Broad troughing still exists in the Bering Sea in the upper
levels. This is allowing generally unsettled weather to exist. At
the surface, strong northerly flow still exists. This is pushing
cold air and cold core cumulus clouds to move south across the
Aleutian Island Chain.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement both in the synoptic upper level
pattern and on the surface. Some disagreement does emerge for the
next low pressure moving into the Gulf of Alaska on Friday.
Models are generally bringing the low pressure center into the
Prince William Sound/Eastern Kenai. Some subtleties in placement
and timing exist though, which can make a difference in the
forecast. However, they generally do look good with the movement
of this system. Models are also in good agreement in the Bering Sea.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Light snow is expected to bring in MVFR ceilings and
visibility this morning. Snow will let up this afternoon, but MVFR
ceilings should linger for the rest of the TAF period. Winds will
remain light for the duration.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Saturday Night)...

An area of low pressure over the Northern Gulf is gradually
moving northwestward towards Prince William Sound this morning.
This feature is spreading precipitation along the coast, with rain
along the immediate coast, and snow inland. This is also being
supported by an upper level wave moving northward towards the
coast. As the surface low tracks northwestward this morning, the
snow will spread westward into Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valleys
through the morning. This is occurring slower than previous
guidance suggests, so the timing of the snow has been delayed
towards later on this morning. The snow will only be around for a
few hours this morning, then should end from south to north this
afternoon. Most low elevation areas of Anchorage and the Valley
should hold to an inch or less of accumulation, but a couple
inches are possible at higher elevations. Onshore southerly flow
off the Gulf will keep upslope snow continuing along the Chugach
well into Friday night.

The next front in the series enters the southern Gulf late Friday
night. It will first impact Kodiak very early Saturday morning
with gale force winds and driving rain throughout Saturday
morning, diminishing to showers with gradually diminishing winds
Saturday afternoon. The front will press northward into the North
Gulf Coast during the day on Saturday. The increasing easterly
winds combined with a warmer air mass behind the front will lead
to rising temperatures and snow levels. This includes snow levels
rising above Turnagain Pass, meaning the road through the pass may
see some rain, most likely Saturday afternoon. While those
details are still being worked it, it appears likely that gusty
winds and driving rains will impact much of the rest of the Seward
Highway, especially through Portage Valley and Turnagain Arm
Saturday morning through Saturday night. Another round of snow
being measured in feet is expected in the mountains around
Turnagain Pass, which in turn will once again elevate the
avalanche threat. Check out cnfaic.org for more details on that
threat. Snow will also pile up through Thompson Pass once again
Saturday night through Sunday, though strong winds are unlikely to
add to visibility concerns through Thompson Pass with this
system. Most inland locations look to be effectively downsloped
with the Saturday through Saturday night front hitting the coast,
so most areas are not expected to see much rain, but the gap winds
will keep temperatures well above their seasonal norms, with an
extended period of above freezing temperatures and winds likely
through the Matanuska Valley. Looking ahead, another strong North
Pacific low will race into the Western Gulf by Monday, as the
cycle of active weather continues.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The Southwest remains relatively calm today and through much of
tonight until a gale force North Pacific low pushes into Bristol
Bay. By late Friday/early Saturday the associated front moves
onshore, causing winds across the AKPEN and Bristol Bay to become
increasingly gusty, with the rest of the Mainland following suit
by Saturday afternoon. Additionally, a band of precipitation will
track southeast to northwest with the front across the Mainland.
This will likely start out as snow for the AKPEN and eastern parts
of Bristol Bay, but will quickly transition to a rain/snow mix or
all rain by Saturday afternoon. Elsewhere should remain cold
enough for all snow. Accumulations of 2-4 inches is possible for
coastal Bristol Bay and across the Kuskokwim Delta through
Saturday night. Periods of blowing snow are also likely as winds
will remain gusty through Saturday night; advisory conditions are
not expected but visibilities may be reduced at times.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Broad upper-level troughing extends across much of the Bering,
spilling into the North Pacific, throughout the forecast period. A
few shortwaves will move across the Bering and Aleutians,
resulting in bands of snow showers across the Pribilofs and
Eastern Aleutians. Simultaneously, a strong North Pacific low is
approaching the AKPEN, whose front will track across the AKPEN and
the Southwest Mainland. As a result, northerly flow will persist
for most of the Bering and gusty gale force winds are likely south
of the AKPEN and waters around the Central and Eastern Aleutians,
with the strongest winds through bays and passes. Along the
front, a broad area of precipitation is expected for the Southern
AKPEN and Eastern Aleutians as well. This will mostly be snow
with accumulations of 2-4 inches possible, or more for the higher
elevations. Blowing snow will be a concern for Dutch Harbor, Cold
Bay, and surrounding areas which may significantly reduce
visibilities at times on Saturday and Sunday. Upper level support
does not seem to be strong enough to produce heavy bands of
precipitation, so it it unlikely an advisory will be necessary,
but conditions will continue to be monitored.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Sunday through Tuesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A strong North Pacific low moves over Kodiak
Island into the Alaska Peninsula for Mon. Model tracks and
development vary somewhat, but forecast confidence is good.
Widespread high end easterly gale force winds and waves move
northward over the Gulf with the front and diminish Sunday. A new
North Pacific low enters the Gulf bringing gale force gusts over
the Southeast Gulf Monday. This system will bring rough seas with
wave heights peaking near 20 feet.

Aleutians/Bering: A strong Kamchatka low and front moves east
through Tuesday. Widespread high end gale force winds anticipated
with this system as the front moves to the Central Aleutians and
across the Bering. Enhanced seas expected with this system as wave
heights are forecast to reach 19 feet for the Bering side, and
the Pacific side.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Sunday through
Thursday)...

A progressive pattern is on tap for this forecast period. The
longwave trough extends from NE Russia to SE Alaska. There are
numerous embedded shortwaves. Expect a parade of lows for the
Bering, North Pacific and Gulf Of Alaska. Sunday there will be
surface low near the AKPEN/Bristol Bay and a second one west of
Attu Island. The steering flow is steadily eastward for both
systems. Expect snow in portions of SW AK and the Western Alaska
Range. The front associated with the other low will push directly
over the Central Aleutians. The models spin up a third surface
low south of Kodiak early Monday. This low will move directly into
the Gulf and South Central AK. By Tuesday the front over the
chain will be near Cold Bay. Past Tuesday, divergence has emerged
in the models but they are all showing a continuation of the wet
pattern.
