Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...High pressure continues to hold
across the southern mainland. This is bringing some of the warmest
conditions of the season so far with 850 mb (5000') temperatures
of 7-8 C. With abundant sunshine and a light offshore gradient,
this temperatures are being fully realized. A finger of the jet
at 300 mb (28000') is moving from north to south over the Copper
River Basin at about 80 kts. This is pushing waves of energy from
north to south allowing for some gusty winds to mix down to the
surface.

Out west, the upper level jet is supporting a broad upper level
low north over the Western Bering. It is moving into the base of
the trough at about 95 kts before turning the corner and flowing
from south to north into the northern Bering at 80 kts. Within the
trough, the parent low is weakening just north of the Shemya. A
wave of energy is starting to undercut the low and is taking most
of the energy towards the Central Aleutians. This is bringing some
rain and gusty southeast winds as it moves through the area.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...Models are in very good agreement and
forecast confidence is high. The biggest challenges are timing and
strength of local sea breezes. A deep, cool trough will drop in
from the Yukon Territory Thu afternoon. Models all depict a very
similar set-up synoptically with this transition from the ridge to
the trough. This could bring widespread wetting rains (>0.10"
QPF) to the Copper River Basin and possibly stretch further south.
There is also enough instability ahead of this feature Thu
afternoon that a slight chance of thunderstorms have been included
with this forecast package.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tue
afternoon through Fri afternoon)...

A strong ridge overhead has provided another beautiful day across
Southcentral. An upper level trough currently dropping southward
over the Alaska-Yukon border has allowed for the development of
showers across the northern Copper River Basin this afternoon,
which will continue through this evening. By Wednesday, the ridge
will weaken as two troughs impinge on each side. To the west,
several upper level waves will approach Kodiak Island early
Thursday, bringing rain and southerly winds. Meanwhile farther
north, a stronger trough will move southward into the Copper River
Basin, introducing enough instability across the area to generate
isolated wet thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. The best chances
for storm development will be along the foothills of the Alaska
Range as well as over the Wrangell Mountains. As the trough axis
continues to extend farther south on Friday, a transition to a
cooler and wetter pattern is in store across Southcentral heading
into the weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Areas of smoke with low visibilities near Pilot Point (AKPEN) are
possible this evening as a fire continues to burn in this area.
The ridge will continue to influence the SW Alaska through this
evening resulting in warm temperatures and mostly clear skies.
The ridge will weaken and re-orient overnight. On Wednesday and
Thursday the remnants of a front will move in from the Bering
bringing increasing cloud coverage and chances of rain from the
Kuskokwim Delta to coastal areas of Bristol Bay to the AKPEN.
Late Thursday and Friday residual moisture will move into Igiugig
and Port Alsworth. However, any rainfall accumulations will be
light.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A low pressure north of Attu Island will continue to weaken and
become absorbed into the longwave pattern. As this occurs the
pressure gradient forces will decrease. Another low south of Adak
will jump the Chain this evening. Its frontal boundary will impact
the Eastern Aleutians and AKPEN Wednesday bringing gusty winds and
precipitation. This low will move north of St Paul Island and
begin to weaken. Wednesday afternoon/early Thursday there is a
new low brewing in the North Pacific south of Shemya. The models
suggest that the track of the low will be eastward through Friday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Friday through Sunday)...

A weakening low pressure system moving south of the Aleutians may
have the potential to bring areas gale force winds along the
north gulf coast and Shelikof Strait starting on Saturday through
Sunday night. With model uncertainty, forecaster confidence is low
with the timing and duration. Elsewhere, expect winds less than
35 kts and seas less than 20 ft over the Bering and the Gulf for
the Day 3 through 5 period.

Long Term Discussion (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)

There is moderate to high confidence that unsettled weather will
persist from the eastern Aleutians to the Alaska Peninsula as an
upper level low continues to move south of the Aleutians with a
frontal boundary spreading rain and wind to these regions. The
frontal system and associated rain will stream northward over the
Gulf, with the bulk of the precipitation poised at Kodiak Island,
the Kenai Peninsula and coastal areas of Prince William Sound.
Meanwhile, a ridge high pressure over the northern Bering will
keep most of the western mainland relatively dry through at least
Saturday.

The latest operational model runs are coming into a better
consensus with a polar upper level low moving across the eastern
and central part of the state beginning on Friday. As the upper
low gets detached from the polar jet stream, a cutoff low will
develop and migrate westward across the interior and into the
Bering Sea. Parts of the southern and southwest mainland can
expect below normal temperatures with cloudy and wet conditions at
times. Beyond that point, there is some uncertainty on how
quickly the low will phase with the aforementioned Aleutian low
and the potential impacts in the forecast areas for early next
week.
