Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

In the upper levels, there is a low over the central Gulf and
another over western Alaska. Besides this, a ridge is over much of
the Bering heading into Southwest Alaska with another low just
west of the western Bering and Aleutians.

Cloud cover remains widespread over much of the area, with low
stratus over the Bering/Aleutians and clouds ahead of a front over
the western Aleutians. Rainfall continues across much of
Southcentral and the northern Gulf/Prince William Sound with
scattered showers dissipating as they move east across the
Southwest. Rain is also over the western Bering/Aleutians ahead of
the incoming front. Low temperatures across the region range from
the low 30s to the high 40s.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model agreement is good through Sunday. Forecast challenges
include the timing and strength of an upper level wave as it
relates to precipitation across Southcentral and switching back to
a warm and dry pattern on Sunday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Southerly winds should continue to diminish through this
morning before calmer winds take over for the remainder. Rain is
likely to continue through the morning with MVFR conditions.
Expect VFR conditions after this for the rest of the forecast
package.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Saturday through Monday)...

Cool and cloudy conditions with widespread areas of precipitation
will continue today as low pressure is still influencing the
region. This low is now quickly moving east through the Gulf of
Alaska as expected. Energy dropping into Southcentral AK from the
western interior is also moving through this morning, making for
showery precipitation that is observed on RADAR in the Susitna
Valley. Both systems will make a quick exit tonight, allowing
weather to clear behind them.

Tomorrow high pressure will build in behind these systems, making
for a pleasant start to the week. This high will bring the warmest
temperatures we have seen yet this year, with temperatures rising
above 70F in the Susitna Valley on Monday. Light northerly flow
associated with this high will aid in warming temperatures by
clearing skies and dropping humidity. So, a transition to better
weather overnight with fair weather to start the week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

Mostly cloudy skies will continue near the coast this morning as a
ridge approaches from the west. A dry, warming trend is expected
through the weekend into early next week as the ridge moves over
the area. Offshore flow Sunday and Monday will lead to mostly
sunny skies and high temperatures rising to near 70 across
interior regions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

A vertically stacked low is currently centered near the western
Aleutians. Its associated front is slowly tracking west to east
across the Chain and will bring moderate rain and gusty southerly
winds through the weekend. An upper level ridge over Southwest
Alaska will inhibit the front from moving any farther east and it
is expected to stall and gradually weaken over the Alaska
Peninsula on Monday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Monday through Wednesday)...

The main feature through Wednesday is the western Bering low with
its front spreading over the eastern Bering into western Alaska.
Overall confidence is high, except in the track and development of
the low. Areas of gale force winds expected along the front
sweeping to the back side of the low, diminishing Tuesday. Seas to
15 feet for the western Bering, subsiding. Generally light winds
under high pressure forecast for the Gulf through Wednesday. A
front approaches the western Gulf for Wednesday.

Long Term Discussion (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through Friday)

Global ensemble guidance is in excellent agreement in the long
term longwave pattern over the forecast area. A high amplitude
ridge is expected to form early in the week with the ridge axis
extending from Cook Inlet to the Seward Peninsula. Broad longwave
troughing is expected to persist over the Bering through Friday.
This pattern is expected to hold through Wednesday when troughs
over the Bering and Yukon Territory begin to squeeze out the
ridge, returning southerly flow to the mainland.

This pattern, on Tuesday, will mean ample sunshine and warm
temperatures for Southcentral with rainy and overcast conditions
over the Bering Sea and AKPen. The warmest temperatures of the
spring are possible on Tuesday, with highs in the mid to upper
60s for the western Kenai north to Palmer and low 70s possible
over the Susitna Valley. A few of the models are hinting at
potential for thunderstorm activity in the Copper River Basin
Tuesday afternoon, but confidence in that is low. Widespread 60s
are likely over Southwest Alaska. On Wednesday, the trend towards
cooler, overcast and rainy conditions will begin to take hold
from west to east as the ridge breaks down. Southerly flow aloft
will begin to bring cloud cover in from the southwest Wednesday
with rain possible over the Southcentral coastline as a front
swings into the Gulf. In this common pattern, the uncertainty lies
in where a triple point low sets up as the front crosses into the
AKPen. This will determine the inland extent of precipitation
Thursday and Friday.
