Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

There are a few key features across the area today. First off,
weak flow under weak ridging across the Aleutians and the
southern mainland is predominant. There is no upper level jet (300
mb or 28,000') over 30 kts across the mainland today. This is
leaving the whole area vulnerable to afternoon convection,
especially near the higher terrain. A westerly push over Southwest
led to widespread stratus and fog this morning, especially across
the YK-Delta. The weak flow is also allowing for stratus and fog
to be quite prevalent across the Bering.

The other key features are a weak upper level low moving onshore
near the Seward Peninsula and a developing area of energy in the
North Pacific. The upper level low will track inland near Hooper
Bay later today and should continue to help mix out the
stratus/fog. It will also serve as a focusing mechanism for some
convection. The system in the North Pacific is impressive and will
merge with some energy from the Bering later in the week (continue
reading for more details).

.MODEL DISCUSSION...Models are in very good agreement through the
short term leading to moderate to high forecast confidence. The
trouble spots will be the timing and strength of sea breezes,
timing and placement of convection, and any fog/stratus that forms
again tonight-Tue morning. There has been some discrepancy with
the upper level low tracking in from the Seward Peninsula heading
into Tue evening. The NAM had been the southern outlier with this
feature, but has since trended further north in line with the
global models. The "big" system of the week will be the energy
from the North Pacific developing near the Eastern Aleutians/Alaska
Peninsula Wed-Thu. The GFS continues to be the most bullish with
this system, bringing winds all the way to storm-force (50 kts).
This forecast package will take a more conservative approach,
holding winds lower and closer to the model consensus.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tonight
through Thursday)...

It's been another beautiful day across Southcentral. A few
scattered showers are popping up this afternoon across the
northern Susitna Valley. Meanwhile farther east, there is a
possibility for an isolated thunderstorm or two this evening across
the northern Copper River Basin, though with minimal upper level
forcing and disorganized flow, current thinking is that anything
that does develop will be mostly showers. This same trend is
expected for tomorrow afternoon as an upper level ridge continues
to pivot eastward across Southcentral. Showers are expected to
develop across the northern parts of the Susitna Valley while an
isolated wet thunderstorm is possible across the northern Copper
River Basin Tuesday afternoon, especially across the higher
terrain and along the foothills of the Alaska Range. Cloud cover
will then increase across the area by Wednesday as an approaching
front nears the northern Gulf coast. Kodiak Island will be the
first to see gusty southeasterly winds and rain early Wednesday as
the front lifts overhead. Easterly winds will ramp up across the
northern Gulf waters, with enhanced gale force winds across the
usual places including the Barren Islands, Kamishak Bay, and
Shelikof Strait. Precipitation will then fill in across the
northern Gulf coast Wednesday afternoon and evening. With gusty
southeasterly winds expected, there will be downsloping, and thus
minimal precipitation in the typical downslope locations including
western Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage Bowl, and the southern areas
of the Mat-Su Valleys. Expect the remainder of the workweek to be
cloudy and rainy as the front lifts inland over the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tonight
through Thursday)...

A ridge of high pressure extending over the Southwest will become
flattened out by a strong upper low moving ashore near the Norton
Sound late tonight into tomorrow. This will keep onshore flow
relatively strong, especially across the Kuskokwim Delta. Similar
to this morning, expect these westerly winds to bring areas of
fog and low stratus back into the Southwest Coast late tonight,
especially right near and southeast of Bristol Bay and along the
Kuskokwim Delta Coast. Cold air advection south of the low moving
into the the interior will also keep temperatures on the cool side
tonight and tomorrow, especially where fog and stratus struggle
to erode on Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday, expect a shift in the pattern as a fairly potent
front moves up to the AkPen and Aleutians. Prevailing winds will
flip to the east, bringing much warmer and drier air from the
central interior into much of the Southwest. This will also act
to keep low clouds/fog away from all but the immediate coastline,
yielding a warm and sunny day for nearly everywhere north of the
AKPen. Breezy conditions will pick up by Wednesday evening,
especially for interior Bristol Bay where flow from the east
will be channeled through the Kamishak Gap.

Widespread showers, cloud cover and easterly winds will increase
across the entire area by AM Thursday as the front crosses the
AKpen/Aleutians into the Bering.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through
3/Tonight through Thursday)...

Very quiet conditions and light winds across nearly the entire
Bering will last for one more day as strong surface ridging holds
on as the dominant weather player through tomorrow. Low marine
stratus trapped under the ridge by the marine inversion will be
about the most impactful weather to speak of before things become
quite a bit more active later in the week. By Wednesday, a large
North Pacific low will extend a front into the Aleutians and
AKPen. This will drive a gale force coastal jet into the Eastern
Aleutians on the Pacific side on Wednesday morning, especially
from the Eastern Aleutians to southern AKPen. Weaker (but still
noticeably stronger) winds will also spread across the southern
Bering, backing from easterly to northerly as the low center
drifts east on Thursday. Widespread areas of rain in association
with this system will move across the southern and eastern Bering
and over the Eastern Aleutians from Wednesday to Thursday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

A large low situated south of the Alaska Peninsula on Thursday
will exit across the northeast Pacific and southern Gulf of Alaska
Thursday night through Saturday. While there may be some small
areas of gale force winds early Thursday in the eastern
Aleutians/eastern Bering Sea region, winds will be diminishing.
Meanwhile, the as associated front will lift northward across the
Gulf and conditions look favorable for a barrier jet along the
North Gulf coast. Thus, expect a larger area of gale force winds
from Shelikof Strait to the northern Gulf Thursday through
Thursday night before weakening on Friday. A new storm looks like
it will track into the western to central Bering Sea Saturday, but
confidence in track and strength of this system is low.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

Friday looks fairly cool and cloudy across the southern Alaska
mainland as a large low complex sits south of the Alaska
Peninsula. In particular, it looks favorable for rain along the
Gulf coast, Kodiak Island, and portions of Southwest Alaska.
Although there is uncertainty in the location of surface low
centers, winds will have already peaked by this time and will be
diminishing from the eastern Bering Sea to the Gulf of Alaska. The
storm will exit eastward Saturday, but model solutions vary on
how fast it will exit. Expect warmer and drier conditions across
Southwest Alaska, while the forecast for Southcentral is much more
uncertain. Upper waves rotating back westward overtop of the
upper low center in the Gulf could keep clouds and showers in the
forecast, especially for the Copper River Basin and eastern Prince
William Sound. The models are even more out of sync on Sunday,
with one solution showing a ridge building over Southcentral while
another just keeps the upper low center (and cyclonic flow aloft)
sitting over the Gulf. Stay tuned for updates to the Southcentral
weekend forecast.

Meanwhile, model agreement is not any better out across the Bering
Sea this weekend. All solutions indicate a trough and surface low
tracking somewhere into the western to central Bering, but the
large spread in track and depth of any storm makes it hard to
provide any specifics at this time. Forecast confidence continues
to head down hill as we head to early next week.
