A complex low centered 110 nm southwest of Attu moves to 150 nm 
south of Kiska for Wed evening before dissipating Thu morning. Its 
front remains stationary over the central Aleutians through Wed 
afternoon. A 992 mb low develops along the front 125 nm southeast 
of Atka Wed afternoon and moves to 105 nm northwest of Atka at 
984 mb Thu afternoon, then to 70 nm south of Atka at 987 mb for 
Fri morning.

There is a  987 mb low 70 nm south of Adak Fri morning and then 
moves to 150 nm southeast of Atka at 990 mb Fri afternoon. This 
low will continue to weaken rapidly. A second low of 991 mb will 
be over King Cove Fri afternoon. Sat morning the 
second low weaken to 993 mb and be located at 100 NM north of
Dutch Harbor.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The dominant weather feature continues to be a broad upper-level
trough situated from the Gulf of Alaska west across the AKPEN and
eastern Aleutians. Upstream, a transient upper-level ridge is
moving east over the central Aleutians while a second upper-
level low sits over the Kamchatka Peninsula. Within the
aforementioned broad trough are two surface lows. The first is
a vertically stacked low just south of Kodiak Island. A front
associated with this feature is lifting north across the Gulf this
morning and is bringing bands of rain showers from the northern
Gulf to coastal Southcentral and the Kenai Peninsula. The latest
ASCAT scatterometer pass indicates the presence of gale-force
winds wrapping underneath low out over the western Gulf. The
colder airmass that was present over the central Bering and
eastern Aleutians yesterday has also moved south of this low,
indicated by the drier air noted in water vapor imagery advecting
behind the front as well as the open-cell stratocumulus in IR and
visible imagery.

A second surface low is also continuing to weaken as it moves
south from the eastern Aleutians out over the North Pacific. This
was the feature responsible for northwesterly gales as well as
mixed rain/snow showers over the southern Bering yesterday.

The Kamchatka low is pushing a front over the western Aleutians
this morning. Southeasterly gales and widespread precipitation is
occurring along the front west of Adak.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good synoptic agreement through the next two to
three days, resulting in moderate to high forecast confidence.
There some subtle differences between the models, but nothing that
looks to alter the current forecast in a significant way. A
NAM/GFS blend was preferred for the timing of the southward
progression of the low currently south of Kodiak, as it is
slightly farther north than the position initialized by the
latest GFS run and farther south than the NAM. Farther west,
there is some disagreement with the placement of a triple-point
low developing along a over the central Aleutians by Wednesday
afternoon. Again, the overall differences are not significant,
with all guidance indicating the development of widespread
precipitation and southeasterly gales for the eastern Aleutians
and southern Bering by Wednesday afternoon. Thus, a NAM/GFS blend
was also preferred with this system.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist. Southerly winds and gusts are
expected to increase again early this afternoon and continue
through the overnight hours before relaxing early morning
Wednesday. Ceilings may drop below 5,000ft this afternoon as
showers move across Anchorage.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Thursday night)...
A vertically stacked low has reached its maximum strength near
the south end of Kodiak island. The low will slowly drop
southward into the Pacific this afternoon through tonight, with
precipitation tapering to scattered showers by this evening.
Colder air has wrapped all the way around the low center and will
push across Kodiak Island this morning. The 12Z sounding shows a
freezing level of 1400 feet. While the airmass is still in the
process of cooling, do not think snow will make it down to the
surface, where temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s.

Meanwhile, a "cold front" will push onshore along the north Gulf
coast today, bringing widespread rain ((and mountain snow) to the
eastern Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound. An upper level
trough extending from the north side of the Kodiak low will help
drive frontal moisture inland. There won't be much left of the
upper trough, so the primary forcing for precipitation will be
instability as colder air aloft spreads northward across
Southcentral this afternoon through tonight. Thus, expect showers
to spread inland this afternoon and evening. The most likely area
to see showers will be from Anchorage northward to the Mat-Su.

The region will dry out tonight, with a few showers lingering over
the mountains. Weak cyclonic flow aloft will produce some mid to
high level clouds on Wednesday, but do expect some sun peaking
through. A warming and drying trend will continue through Thursday
as offshore flow develops ahead of a deep Pacific low approaching
Southeast Alaska. It now looks like some of the energy rotating
around the low will head for Southcentral Alaska Thursday night.
Upper forcing looks weak and unfocused, but is could bring some
light rain into the region.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A fairly benign weather pattern will continue across Southwest
Alaska over the next 3 days. A wave of upper level energy will
bring showers to the Kuskokwim Valley this afternoon. Despite
models showing instability in a few different stability
parameters, thunderstorms are unlikely due to the snowpack keeping
temperatures near the surface cool which promotes atmospheric
stability. Otherwise, the next 3 days will have partly cloudy
skies and light winds for much of the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A weakening front over the western Bering/Aleutians will continue
to bring gale-force winds to the area this morning. Winds will
then ease to below gale-force this afternoon. Low pressure will
then move northeastward from the North Pacific into the Bering
Wednesday afternoon. Widespread gale-force southeasterly winds
will begin Wednesday afternoon across the eastern Aleutians and
continue through Thursday morning. Winds will be highest in areas
prone to funneling from the southeast. This low will weaken and
broaden on Thursday as winds ease below gales. This low will also
bring widespread rain to the eastern Aleutians and western Alaska
Peninsula during this period.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Bering: A low moves into the Central Aleutians through Saturday.
Expect high end small craft winds over the Eastern Aleutians and
Alaska Peninsula with areas of gale force winds near channeled
terrain as well as the southern Bering Sea on Thursday. Winds
should diminish on Friday.

Gulf of Alaska: A complex low near the southern Gulf Thu and
Friday is bringing a bit of uncertainty to the area. Gales are
possible with a barrier jet along the north Gulf coast Friday into
Saturday. There is just a slight chance for gales farther south
in the Gulf with this low during the period.

Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

Models are struggling with the long-term with forecast confidence
being low. Anticipate increased winds, waves and precipitation
along a front across the Bering and over the eastern Aleutians on
Friday. The backside of this elongated area of low pressure,
should be over the western Aleutians around this time, bringing an
increase in winds, waves and precipitation to this area. As the
front moves across the Gulf and the Barren Islands, winds should
meet gale force criteria through gaps and passes into Saturday.
The low is expected to remain nearly stationary through Sunday as
it dissipates. For Monday, models bring a low into the southern
Gulf and south across the central Aleutians. If this scenario is
to play out, expect an active pattern across both regions Sunday
into Monday.
