COOK INLET...

A 1014 mb low 65 nm east of Middleton Island dissipates over the
eastern Gulf by Saturday afternoon. A 998 mb low 185 nm southeast
of Sitkinak Sun afternoon moves to 145 nm southeast of Kodiak 
City by Mon morning. Its associated front approaches the 
southwestern Gulf Sun afternoon and moves to the northern Gulf 
by Mon morning.

A 998 mb low develops over the Southern Gulf for Sun afternoon 
and moves to 165 nm southeast of Kodiak City by Mon morning before 
dissipating over Kodiak Island Mon afternoon. Its front moves from 
the southern Gulf Sun afternoon to the northern Gulf by Mon 
afternoon. A second front associated with a 1000 mb 70 nm west of 
Sitkinak enters the western Gulf Mon afternoon and moves to the 
Northern Gulf by Tue morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A negatively tilted upper trough is slowly moving east across
Southcentral, followed by a shortwave which could bring increased
cloudiness and low stratus to the area this morning. Moisture from
the northern Gulf merging with the upper trough increases the
potential for rain today over Copper River Basin and eastern
Prince William Sound, including Copper River Delta. Father west, fog
and low stratus clouds under a ridge of high pressure over the
Bering continues into this morning. Meanwhile, a stacked low over
the North Pacific will bring at least light rain across the
western Aleutians. Steeped northwesterlies over Southwest Alaska
ushered low clouds and stratus especially over the Y-K Delta and
Coast since last night.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Overall models are in decent agreement through at least Saturday
evening. The extra-tropical low (former Typhoon Surigae) is
expected to remain a couple hundred miles south of the Aleutians
until Saturday night when it approaches the Cold Bay and Sand
Point. Through this transition uncertainties begin to arise near
the end of the short term. GFS and NAM solutions shows strong
disagreement on the motion and placement of the extra-tropical
low once it gets closer to Cold Bay Saturday night. This same low
plays a huge role into the new week's forecast pattern, which
could guarantee elevated seas, winds, and increased moisture and
rain mainly over land and surrounding waters in the path of the
aforementioned low. For this reason, the high forecast confidence
for the first two days will transition to low confidence between
Saturday night and Sunday morning.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Periods of patchy fog and low stratus is possible near the
vicinity of Ted Stevens International Airport this morning.
However, this situation will unlikely create ceiling and reduced
visibility. Therefore, VFR conditions and light and variable winds
will persist.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2..Fri and
Sat)...

The cold front continues to sweep across the southern mainland,
but it will bring a drying trend as we head into the weekend. As
of about 5am, the front is over Eureka and tracking to the east.
It brought some snow to higher elevations during the overnight
hours, to include Glen Alps and Hatcher Pass. As the front slides
into the Copper River Basin, it will continue to produce rain
which could possibly mix with snow during the colder morning
hours. Around the Cook Inlet, some showers could linger this
morning, especially in westerly upslope areas, but PoPs will trend
downward quickly through the day as drier northwest flow aloft
starts to take over. There could be some patchy low clouds and fog
lingering this morning before the drier air mixes all the way
down. This same flow will also make for some gusty winds through
much of the day in some of the typical gaps. Resurrection Bay,
Passage Canal, and the Cook Inlet, to include Kachemak Bay, will
see these winds ramp up through the morning and persist through
much of the daylight hours.

The front will clear front west to east by late Fri night. PoPs
will remain high over the Copper River Basin until about midnight
tonight into Sat before the system finally moves past McCarthy.
In its wake, a much colder airmass will be in place for Saturday.
Most inland areas can expect to wake up to lows below freezing on
Saturday morning. As a shortwave ridge slides into the area from
the western Gulf of AK tonight, this could bring the potential for
some fog or low stratus across parts of Southcentral to start Sat.
The best chances for this will be in places that received more
precipitation from our front. With some dry air holding on near
the surface, stratus looks like it will be more likely at this
time. If anything were to form, it should burn off quickly under
the May sunshine leading to a cool, but pleasant day across the
area. By Sat night, another front slides into Kodiak Island with
more onshore flow and rain. This front looks to climb near the
Gulf Coast by Sunday leading to an increase in SE winds and some
mid-high clouds spilling over the mountains.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Friday
through Sunday)..

Overcast skies over the Kuskokwim Valley and Delta this morning
will begin to break down midday as a shortwave ridge moves
overhead. Expect high temperatures to be a few degrees higher
than those on Thursday as the bulk of the cold air advection from
this last system is now over. Temperatures on Saturday will
increase by as much as ten degrees over the Kuskokwim Valley and
Delta as southerly winds advect a warmer airmass into the region.
Cloud cover will increase from south to north throughout the day
as moisture is pulled into the region to the east of a shortwave
trough over the central Bering. The AKPen will be the first area
to see rain from this system, primarily on the southern (upslope)
side of the peninsula. By early Sunday morning coastal Southwest
will see widespread light rain. High pressure over the interior
should prevent precipitation from pushing too far inland though
the Kuskokwim Mountains may see some rain aided by upslope flow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Friday through Sunday)..

Low stratus and rain showers are likely to continue across the
Aleutian Chain through Saturday as an occluded low continues its
path east. On Saturday a shortwave trough will drop south out of
eastern Russian, bringing in a much colder airmass to the region.
With cold air aloft and lift provided by the trough, expect snow
showers for the Pribilof Islands and central and western Aleutian
Islands on Sunday. Cool northwesterly winds between 25 and 35 mph
are also expected as the trough dives south over the central
Aleutians.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

There is high confidence that a developing area of low pressure
south of Saint Matthew Island will strengthen for Sunday with
northerly gales developing and wave heights building by Sunday
afternoon northwest of the Pribilofs. This area of gales will
expand and move south, reaching the southern Bering in an area
from Unalaska to Adak by early Monday morning. Waves in
association with the winds will build to between 15 and 20 feet.
The gales will weaken and waves subside by Monday afternoon as the
surface low crosses the Chain and moves into the North Pacific.

For the Gulf, easterly winds 20 to 30 kt will dominate the
northern Gulf Sunday through Monday as a front moves north across
the region. There may be embedded pockets of gale-force gusts and
elevated wave heights within the larger wind field along the
front, but confidence is low.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

The long term begins with a broad  upper-level trough extending
from the central Bering to the Gulf of Alaska. An upper-level
ridge remains over the interior of the state with a second
stronger ridge over eastern Siberia. Within the long-wave trough
are two upper-level lows. The first looks to be situated around
the southern Gulf of Alaska, with an associated surface low
extending a front toward the northern Gulf. By late Monday, the
surface low weakens and the front stalls along the coast as the
upper-level energy moves to onshore. The lingering front looks to
bring rain and higher elevation snow to the immediate coast
through early Tuesday with showers continuing across the interior,
especially over the higher terrain, through early Wednesday. By
Wednesday, shower activity will diminish across the Southern
Mainland as the upper-level wave weakens and the ridge begins to
build back in from the east.

The second upper-level wave and associated surface low will track
southeast and cross the Chain east of Unalaska by Monday
afternoon. A strong northwesterly flow between this feature and
the ridge over Siberia will advect colder air across the Bering,
with a mix of rain and snow showers for the Bering/Aleutians
through Tuesday. By late Tuesday, the shower activity will
diminish as the low moves to the Gulf of Alaska and the Siberian
ridge moves south over the Bering. Model solutions diverge greatly
Wednesday into Thursday with the strength and placement of the
aforementioned ridge. The GFS maintains the surface ridge over the
Bering with the development of a much weaker upper-level ridge
over interior Alaska. The ECMWF shifts the Bering ridge northward
and allows for the development of a stronger upper-level ridge
over the state. The differences between these solutions will
determine just how far westward along the Aleutian Chain a
developing north Pacific low will advance and how far north a
second low will move into the Gulf of Alaska by midweek. A blend
of these two solution would bring unsettled weather in the form of
rain and gusty southeasterly winds to the western Aleutians by
Thursday along with the potential for rain and higher elevation
snow along the immediate Southcentral coast in association with a
frontal system moving to the northern Gulf.
