.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

High pressure over the Interior continues to weaken as longwave
troughs continue applying pressure and pushing onshore, forcing the
ridge out. Multiple fronts off a North Pacific low pass over the
Gulf through mid week, keeping Kodiak Island showery and bringing
active weather to the North Gulf Coast mid-to-late week. A longwave
trough extending off a polar low digs down into Southwest Alaska
late Wed night, switching up the upper level pattern across the
State late week into the weekend.
Remnants of Typhoon Surigae (now an extratropical low) lingers
west of the Aleutians, with its front moving across the Western
Aleutians and western Bering through the forecast period.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in decent agreement overall, with a fair amount of
discrepancies along the fronts in both the Gulf and western
Bering. Models are struggling with various weak low centers
forming within a second front pushing north along the eastern Gulf.
Model spread continues to grow as we move towards the end of the
week.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Tue and
Wed)...

The ridge of high pressure will continue to slowly
breakdown over the next couple of days allowing for increasing
clouds and eventually chances for rain. A strong, polar trough is
dropping from north to south this morning in the Yukon Territory.
This is cutting the high off from any connection to the North
American Ridge and forcing the high to weaken. More energy will
slide in from the west/Alaska Range as well over the next few
days which will further diminish the remnants of the ridge. Thus,
expect today to be another dry and sunny day across most of the
Southern Mainland before Wed starts to usher in more
moisture/clouds. Any chances for rain for inland locations should
hold off until at least late Wed night or early Thu morning.

Weather over the northern Gulf remains a different story. A
frontal boundary continues to loiter over that area. It is
bringing low clouds, rain, and breezy northeast winds to Kodiak
Island. This feature will remain in much the same location today
and most of Wed, so expect these conditions to persist. By late
Wed, it will start its slow trek towards the Gulf Coast. This will
result in increasing chances of rain for the Eastern Kenai
Peninsula and Prince William Sound. It will also usher in a more
robust southeast gradient across the area. This could lead to some
breezy gap winds, especially along Turnagain Arm, even as early as
this afternoon. The better chance for these winds (and the
potential of them clipping W Anchorage) will occur Wed
afternoon/evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tuesday
through Thursday afternoon...

A calm weather pattern is expected in the short term due to a
ridge building in from the central Bering and a trough retreating
south and into the North Pacific. This pattern places Southwest
Alaska in a zone of northeast flow aloft, which is a dry and clear
pattern for the area. Expect high temperatures to be slightly above
average with morning lows falling around freezing. This pattern will
change Wednesday afternoon as a shortwave and cold front begins to
push southeast from the Bering Strait. There is a considerable
amount of uncertainty remaining with this system, particularly where
and when precipitation will arrive on Thursday. Temperatures will
likely remain above freezing for the bulk of the precipitation, so
at this time rain is expected in the valleys of the Lower Kuskokwim
Valley with snow over higher terrain. Precipitation may switch over
to snow on the backside of the cold front but this should be brief,
with accumulation less than one inch possible.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tuesday through Thursday afternoon)...

A fairly benign weather pattern will persist over the Bering
through Thursday as high pressure dominates most of the region.
The remnants of Super Typhoon Surigae will propagate slowly
southeast while remaining south of the Aleutian Chain. Gale force
winds and rain are expected over the far Western Aleutians today
while the systems front weakens in place. Otherwise, high pressure
will lead to the usual fog and low stratus throughout much of the
region.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Expect winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the
Day 3 through 5 period.

.Long Term Forecast (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

Models are in fair agreement with major features but spread grows
Saturday through Monday, leading to lower forecast confidence.
Friday we begin the period with a strong shortwave and cold front
moving across mainland Alaska into Southcentral through Saturday,
bringing cooler temperatures and precipitation with valley rain and
higher elevation snow. There is fairly good model agreement with
this feature. Another low pressure and cold front will swing out of
Russia Saturday and Sunday moving into Southwest Alaska and towards
the AKPEN and Gulf by Monday. This will spread more precipitation
across Southcentral by Sunday and Monday. Finally, the remnants of
Typhoon Surigae (currently an extratropical low), will move south of
the Aleutians and toward the Gulf by Monday combining with the
system mentioned previously.
