Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Blocking pattern persists into the weekend, with a strong high
pressure system set up over the interior and a ridge extending
into the North Pacific. A vertically stacked low out in the Bering
will track a series of shortwaves across the Southwest Coast. This
will instigate the breakdown process of our blocking pattern. The
ridge will begin to weaken and eventually breakdown. This may take
several days as this is a very strong high pressure system that
will not be easily forced out. The low over the Bering, will be
the driving force for weather across the Aleutians, AKPen, and
Southwest Coast into the weekend.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good overall synoptic agreement for the next few
days. They are handling the upper levels especially well, with
larger model spread in the lower levels. The main feature is the
Bering low as it moves across the Aleutian Chain and into the
Bering. The NAM continues to keep the low center further north
than the other models, but there is less distance between them
than in previous model runs. The models then come into better
agreement as the low becomes relatively stationary for a short
time over Unalaska on Sunday.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The big ridge over the interior of the state is pushing back over
Southcentral Alaska today. As it does this, the weakening front
over the northern Gulf and Kenai Peninsula will be pushed back to
the south and bring full sunshine and continued warm temperatures
to Southcentral. As this front moves southward, it will once
again bring rainfall to Kodiak Island today, though the rain
should not be as heavy as the past two days due to the front being
quite a bit weaker.

Weak sea breezes are beginning to show up in the afternoon and
evenings in Kachemak Bay, Resurrection Bay and Valdez. These
afternoon and evening sea breezes will be the typical daily cycle
for the next five months except for occasional days where low
pressure in the northern Gulf is able to override them.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Sunday)...

A wet pattern will persist mainly over AKPEN and portions of
Bristol Bay and Y-K Delta/Coast in the next couple days.
Meanwhile, drier conditions and warmer temperatures will continue
along the Lower Kuskokwim Valley. Satellite and models indicated
increased moisture embedded within a mid-level jet extending from
Shelikof Strait to AKPEN through Y-K Delta/Coast this morning.
This will provide scattered rain over Bristol Bay today and over
AKPEN through Saturday morning. The onset of a frontal boundary
from the eastern Bering will bring another series of rain starting
Saturday afternoon, including gusty winds over AKPEN and coastal
areas through the weekend. All and all, more rain is expected to
pass through much of the coastal area in the coming days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Sunday)...

A North Pacific low and its associated front will elevate seas and
winds to gale conditions over the Central Aleutians and southern
Bering starting this afternoon. More rainbands will brush across
the Eastern Aleutians and Pribilof Islands as the low crosses the
Aleutians into the southern Bering Saturday afternoon, then
stalls south of Pribilof Island into Sunday night. As a result,
the stacked low over the central Bering will dominate local
conditions through the weekend.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5)...

Expect winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the
Day 3 through 5 period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The big question for the extended forecast is how long does this
blocking high pressure remain in place. Historically, model
guidance struggles with such features and tends to break them down
too fast once established. Dry and clear conditions can be
expected for southcentral as long as that block stays in place,
likely into early next week. The low pressure system that will be
in place near the Alaska Peninsula will decay in place will keep
some cloudiness and rain over the southwest mainland. Expect above
normal temperatures across Southcentral Alaska to continue along
with seasonally normal dry conditions.
