Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The ridge over the Bering is holding steady and has become more
amplified than yesterday. The strong moisture feed over top the
ridge is mixing into the higher levels, and with the higher
amplification, the bulk of the precip will likely remain over the
Kuskokwim Delta through the afternoon. Then, a highly amplified
trough forces this ridge quickly eastward. The ridge moves across
Southwest and into Southcentral and flattens out. The ridge is
the main weather driver for Southern Alaska, but the trough
forcing the ridge east is what is going to allow the moisture to
make its way into Southcentral.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good synoptic agreement in both the upper and lower
levels over the next few days. Model solutions show the ridge
currently over the Bering being more amplified when compared to
previous model runs. The most notable differences between model
solutions is the timing and location of formation of weak surface
lows. This goes for both the Aleutian Chain and in the northern
Gulf as the front moves eastward. There are distinct differences
across all parameters amongst the models for the Kamchatka low on
Sunday afternoon. The GFS and Canadian models seem to be in the
best agreement for this system.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Winds are expected to increase and become gusty by the
afternoon. Lower cloud ceilings will keep conditions marginal for
most of the day.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Saturday through Monday)...

Quiet weather today will give way to a late winter storm for
Southcentral tonight and into tomorrow. We are still expecting
southerly flow with a good moisture feed to move up Cook Inlet
and into the Susitna Valley starting later today and increasing in
intensity overnight. This will bring steady upslope snow to the
region. Direction of flow will be also be favorable for heavy snow
in Hatcher's Pass. Further analysis tonight indicates that the
Matanuska Valley will also see snow tonight into tomorrow, so a
winter weather advisory was issued for the Glenn Highway there.
Heaviest amounts look to be between Sutton and Chickaloon, with 6
to 10 inches storm total. Please see the winter weather advisories
for details.

In addition to the already noteworthy weather with the late
winter storm, there are other areas of active weather the next
couple of days. Winds pushing up the Cook Inlet look to be fairly
strong, reaching to gale force level at times along the Kenai
Peninsula. The same can be expected for Shelikof Strait. The
Anchorage Bowl and lower Mat-Su Valleys can also expect to see
significant warming tomorrow, with temperatures reaching into the
lower 40s in some spots. This warming means any precipitation
that does fall will fall as a rain/snow mix or all rain.
Fortunately, little precipitation is expected for the warmest
areas. Do expect very messy conditions on Sunday with warming
and/or precipitation. So please plan for difficult travel if you
are out and about.

Sunday an upper level shortwave trough will move through Southcentral
from the west. This will change the direction of flow and kick
out the precipitation and warmer temperatures late in the day.
Expect Monday to cool back down to around freezing and weather
more like what we have been seeing - quiet and on the cool side.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Saturday and
Sunday)...

Moisture overrunning a north Pacific Ridge will bring somewhat
continuous precipitation to the Kuskokwim today before an upper
level trough brings in a colder and drier airmass to the region
Sunday. Models have changed considerably since the last forecast
package due to a stronger ridge and minor differences
with the troughs over the western Bering and Bering Strait. As a
result, wetter weather is now expected along the Kuskokwim where
the flow of moisture will remain nearly stationary, and dry, yet
gloomy weather is expected for Bristol Bay due to ridging
overhead. Precipitation type is expected to be rain or a rain snow
mix for most areas along the Kuskokwim with snow briefly
returning on the tail end of the storm late tonight. Rain is
expected for the valleys of Bristol Bay with a slight chance of
snow by Sunday morning before things dry out and cool down once
again Sunday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Saturday
and Sunday)...

Rain and gusty southwesterly winds are expected today from Dutch
Harbor to Cold Bay, extending north to the Pribilofs as an
elongated low pressure system moves over the area. Behind the low
a shortwave ridge will move in, bringing colder northwesterly
winds and calmer weather before the next front reaches the Western
Aleutians Sunday afternoon. At this time the front looks to be
below gale force with mixed precipitation type.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Monday through Wednesday)...

Overall, forecast confidence is high. A low will traverse
eastward across the northern Bering Sea Monday, with gale force
westerlies possible south of the low center, most likely over the
southern Bering Sea. Meanwhile, gales and freezing spray are
likely along the Alaska Peninsula and western Gulf as another
round of cold air advection produces strong gap winds and
localized areas of freezing spray on Monday. While the winds will
let up Monday night, the aforementioned Bering low will dive
southeastward, bringing another round of cold air advection gap
winds on Tuesday. A more significant surge of Arctic air on
Wednesday looks to produce more widespread winds and freezing
spray from the eastern Bering Sea to the Gulf Wednesday through
Thursday. Stay tuned, as winds could be strongest with this latter
event, making heavy freezing spray an increasing likelihood,
especially south of the Alaska Peninsula and across the Kodiak
Island waters.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through
Friday)...

This forecast package reflects a blend of several global weather
models to hedge against the divergence that emerges in the
longterm forecast period. There are a few items to glean. "Zonal"
(west/east) flow will continue across the Bering through Alaska on
Tuesday. There will be a deep arctic low north of Deadhorse and a
trough will extent southwards towards Prince William sound with
multiple embedded shortwaves. Wednesday the longwave pattern
becomes more amplified as the ridge builds over the Western
Aleutians and the longwave trough descends into the Gulf Of
Alaska and NE Pacific. By late Thursday that aforementioned arctic
low is well south of the Brooks Range. The pattern will be
conducive for another surge of brutally cold air. Expect minimum
temperatures in the single digits across Southcentral, with
typically colder spots likely dipping below zero.
