.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A very strong and warm subtropical ridge remains sitting over the
North Central Pacific with embedded shortwave troughs continuing
to ride along the ridge. A 150 kt jet is amplifying the
aforementioned ridge as it rides along the interior. Very warm
air is also riding up and over top of the ridge, across the
Bering Sea and western Alaska and toward Southcentral. This will
lead to ideal conditions for freezing rain as we head through the
weekend due to the very warm air riding over top of the cold air
in place at the surface. Multiple Winter Weather Advisories have
been issued as a result. See these products for more details.
Nighttime Microphysics is showing clouds embedding the whole
domain with low level clouds/stratus and some pockets of fog over
much the Bering and some isolated portions of Southcentral this
morning.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue to handle the incoming system and freezing rain
potential well, with overall good synoptic agreement through
Thursday. Models continue to indicate a blocking high remaining in
place over the North Pacific with a series of shortwaves riding
the western periphery, bringing continued potential for periods of
strong winds across the Aleutian Chain and Bering Sea and mixed
precipitation changes to the Southern Mainland.

.AVIATION...
PANC...MVFR conditions will persist with freezing rain starting
around 18z. Ceilings will bounce back and forth but mainly stay
MVFR until Monday 6z where IFR conditions become possible.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Tuesday night)...

Warm and moist air moving up and overtop of a strong subtropical
ridge over the North Central Pacific will make it's way into
Southcentral today, bringing freezing rain to many inland areas.
The 12Z Anchorage sounding shows an above freezing warm nose from
about 3800 ft to 7800 ft, while surface temperatures across all
but the Gulf coast remain below freezing. The trend of the past
couple days continues, with a slightly further north track of the
primary short-wave trough which crosses the state from west to
east today through tonight. This will allow warmer air to progress
farther inland across Southcentral today, from Anchorage and Cook
Inlet northward to the Mat-Su and into the western Copper River
Basin. This northward shift also means less precipitation across
the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage.

Have maintained Winter Weather Advisories for Anchorage and the
eastern Kenai Peninsula. However, freezing rain appears less of a
threat than in previous days. Any precipitation that falls this
morning will be light and patchy in nature. The heaviest and
steadiest precipitation looks to be right with the short-wave,
roughly from 3pm to 6pm. With south winds expected to move into
the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage, surface temperatures rise above
freezing by the time the steady precipitation develops. Still,
rain falling on snow covered roadways and walkways can be equally
hazardous.

The most sustained freezing rain and highest ice accumulation is
expected in the Matanuska Valley and northward up the Susitna
Valley to around Talkeetna, where a quarter inch of ice
accumulation is possible. There may be some light snow
accumulation early this morning, but expect a fairly quick
transition to freezing rain for these areas as we head through the
morning hours. The freezing rain will become heavier as we head
to the afternoon hours. Precipitation should remain mostly snow as
you head north of Talkeetna up through Broad Pass to Cantwell,
though even here there could briefly be enough warm air to cause
snow to mix with sleet or freezing rain. Also, expect snow to
transition to freezing rain as you head northeast of Palmer along
the Glenn Highway, all the way through Tahneta Pass. The rest of
the Copper River Basin will remain mostly snow, with the heaviest
snow expected up along the Alaska Range and along the Tok Cutoff
from Chistochina to Mentasta Lake. Bottom line, travel will be
hazardous across much of inland Southcentral today through
tonight.

Precipitation will gradually diminish this evening into the
overnight hours as the upper level short-wave exits to the
southeast. Weak cold air advection behind the short-wave should be
enough to change any remaining precipitation back to snow over
interior Southcentral. While the airmass over the region will
cool, temperature inversions will remain in place. Thus, fog and
low clouds will be prominent on Monday. Another upper level
short-wave rounding the ridge top will just clip Southcentral
Monday night, bringing a quick chance of snow for inland areas.

The next more significant chance of precipitation will come
Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night as a stronger short-wave
and surface cold front move through. The bulk of precipitation
will fall ahead of the cold front. While the southern tier of
Southcentral looks like it will see plain rain, a mix of
precipitation types is likely as you head inland, including
freezing rain. The cold air advection Tuesday night looks strong
enough to change precipitation to snow before ending.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today
through Tuesday)...

A persistent wet pattern is likely to continue for Southwest
through early next week. An upper level wave moving downstream of
a ridge over the eastern Bering Sea is bringing light to moderate
rain and increasing southerly winds over the northern Kuskokwim
Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley this morning. As the ridge axis
flattens and slides east into the Alaska mainland, rain will
spread south into Bristol Bay for the rest of today. Some colder
air from the north may spill over early Monday morning, giving
Hooper Bay and Chevak a chance of light freezing rain before
transitioning back to all rain with upcoming systems. Otherwise,
two distinct shortwaves will provide additional rain on Monday for
areas of Bristol Bay northward and then tapering off by Monday
evening. After a brief break, a warm front extending east from a
western Bering low will send another round of rain and gusty
southerly winds into the forecast area on Tuesday. With a warm,
moist airmass coupled with a deep saturated layer in the wake of
previous storms, widespread low stratus and fog will linger over
the next couple of days. Much like yesterday, daytime highs will
be in 40s with overnight lows in the 30s.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2:
Today through Tuesday)...

A weakening low pressure system is providing rain and widespread
small craft to gale force winds across the Aleutians and northward
into the Pribilofs. Based on the CIMSS MIMIC imagery, a deep
plume of moisture of more than 1” of precipitable water is
extending northeastward to the Bering Sea. Rain is expected to
taper off briefly as the system weakens further and enters the
Bering Strait with winds decreasing to small crafts by late this
afternoon. Meanwhile, an upper level wave and surface low will
track from the North Pacific and into the western Aleutians by
this evening. This system will bring a second round of rain,
widespread gales, and elevated seas across the the forecast area
through Monday. In the western Aleutians near Adak to Kiska,
localized storm force winds are likely from late Sunday night
through Monday morning as some colder air works in along the
backside of the low. As this system lifts northward near the
Kamchatka Peninsula, another low will follow on its heels with
rain, wind, and high seas at times from Monday afternoon through
Tuesday. A warm airmass associated with these systems will help
maintain temperatures well above freezing through early next week.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Tuesday through Thursday)...

Bering...A low moving towards the Bering Strait will bring Gales
across most of the western and central Bering on Tuesday. A
stronger low will potentially bring storm force winds across the
western and central Aleutians and much of the Bering Wed afternoon
and Thu. Seas of 15 to 20 feet possible on Tuesday across the
western and central Bering and increasing to 20 to 30 feet on Wed
afternoon and Thu with stronger low.

Gulf of Alaska...High Pressure and light winds mostly less than 25
knots expected Tuesday. On Wed a low will develop over the
eastern Gulf this combined with cold air advection may produce
gale force winds across a good portion of the Gulf on Wednesday
including Kachemak Bay as well as building seas of 15 to 20 feet.
Winds quickly decrease, as well as subsiding seas less than 15
feet by Thursday morning as a quick moving area of high pressure
move across the area. By Thu afternoon another low moves into the
western Gulf with increasing winds to near Gales but uncertainty
exists with wind strength.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 8 / Wednesday through
Saturday)...

The blocking ridge over the eastern Bering and western Gulf will
begin to break down on Wednesday as a cold front and low over
the Gulf bring snow to parts of Southcentral. Another low
pressure system tracks across the Bering on Thursday. This low and
its frontal system will bring a mixture of rain and/or snow to
Southwest Alaska on Thursday, but some uncertainty on
precipitation type. By late Thursday into Friday snow possible
across parts of Southcentral as the low pressure system moves
across the Gulf. By Saturday models are expecting a strong ridge
to develop across the Bering and could become a blocking ridge.
This will bring cold arctic air into Southcentral by Saturday and
possibly into Southwest Alaska, however there is uncertainty on if
the cold air gets into Southwest Alaska, stay tuned.
