.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Upper level flow is progressive, but amplified. Multiple out of
phase short-wave troughs are tracking from the eastern Bering Sea
and Southwest Alaska into Southcentral Alaska and the Gulf of
Alaska. At the surface, a weak low is positioned over the far
northern Bering Sea with an occluded front draped across Southwest
Alaska and into the western Gulf where a weak triple point low has
developed east of Kodiak Island. Widespread light snow is falling
ahead of the short-waves and front, from the Southwest interior
to Southcentral and Kodiak Island. Temperatures are slowly
creeping up as snow moves in, but remain well below freezing
across most of southern Alaska.

Meanwhile, an occluding low is tracking into the Bering Sea just
to the west of Attu Island, way out at the end of the Aleutian
chain. The associated frontal system is tracking north and east
out ahead of the low, bringing widespread gale force winds and
rain to the region. There are likely some small areas of storm
force winds near the low center as colder air wraps into the
system.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good agreement with handling of large scale
features through the weekend. The primary forecast challenge will
be the transition of precipitation types over Southwest Alaska as
warmer (above freezing) air advects into the region Saturday
afternoon through Sunday.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Ceiling/vis will hover in the low end VFR to high end MVFR
categories with some very light snow remaining in the area through
this evening. Then expect conditions to drop overnight as an
upper level trough approaches and heavier/steadier snow develops.
Snow will quickly end by 15Z Friday, but with weak low level flow
and a ridge quickly building in from the west it looks favorable
to maintain low ceilings (possibly even some fog). This is always
extremely challenging to forecast. For now, have gone with MVFR
conditions on Friday, but there is a chance of IFR conditions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: Tonight
through Sun afternoon)...

A frontal boundary in association with a low in the northern
Bering Sea continues pushing eastward tonight. A weak, triple
point low has formed along this front southeast of Kodiak Island
this evening. The low will slowly strengthen as it pushes east
across the Gulf towards Southeast Alaska. As a result, light snow
is expected to continue across much of Southcentral this evening
and overnight. The best chance time to see a steadier light snow
for the Anchorage Bowl and Matanuska Valley will be between 12-4
AM before trough passage. Otherwise, expect mostly flurries or
brief light snow showers till then. Up to one inch of snow remains
expected for the Anchorage Bowl and Matanuska Valley with 1-2
inches on the Anchorage Hillside before all is said and done early
Friday morning. For Prince William Sound, expect total snow
accumulations of 2 to 5 inches with the highest amounts for
eastern Prince William Sound.

A transient upper level ridge then moves overhead for
Friday/Friday night keeping the weather quiet across Southcentral.
Temperatures area-wide Friday will be in the teens with 20s for
the Kenai Peninsula with single numbers to near zero for the
Copper River Basin where the coldest air will hold on. Some areas
of fog are possible throughout Southcentral Friday night into
early Saturday morning due to the fresh snow that recently
occurred. The one caveat that might hold the fog off is the clouds
with the next system will be quickly moving in. Therefore, how
much fog occurs will be dependent on how quickly the clouds from
the next system move in and how much it radiates out beforehand.

The next system is expected to move into Kodiak first Friday night
into Saturday with a potential rain/snow mix though it could end
up being all snow with little to no accumulation as temperatures
will be near freezing to even slightly above. This same system
will spread another round of light snow into Southcentral
Saturday with mostly one inch amounts, with isolated up to 2 inch
amounts mostly in the Susitna Valley. Most of the moisture isn't
expected to move past the Chugach Mountains keeping most of
eastern Prince William Sound dry. Winds are expected to increase
for Thompson Pass, Seward, Whittier, and the Valdez gap wind areas
on Saturday into Sunday as the pressure gradient increases. Other
than that, expect quiet conditions with mostly clear to partly
cloudy skies for Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Some snow showers persist in southwest mainland Alaska this
evening, but fog may become a bigger issue. The next front moves
in later tonight to the Kuskokwim Delta coast and will bring more
snow and even some blowing snow...especially near Hooper Bay.
While this system is much warmer than the previous one, it does
look like precipitation type will remain all snow for the
Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay. The challenge comes in with the
next system on Saturday night into Sunday. This system is much
warmer and will increase temperatures aloft to above freezing. The
question is whether the precipitation will end before conditions
become favorable for freezing rain, or if it will be snow for the
whole time. This will become a focus of the forecast over the next
few days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The low in the western Bering Sea and associated front will
continue to bring warmer air into the Bering as well as some storm
force winds. This storm will bring rain and snow across the
region as it tracks eastward through Saturday night. The next low
is stronger and warmer and will enter the western Bering Sea
Friday night as a warm upper level ridge builds over the central
Bering Sea. This will bring in the strong south to southwest flow
aloft over the area and the warmer air. Rain will be the
predominant precipitation type for the Aleutians and Alaska
Peninsula with this system Saturday into Sunday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: Winds remain generally less than 35 kt and waves
less than 20 ft for Sunday and Monday as weak low pressure
meanders in the far northern Gulf with high pressure ridging
spreading across the remainder of the area. By Tuesday, expect a
new low to develop over the northern Gulf and exit towards
Southeast AK by Tuesday evening as it deepens. Forecast confidence
for this system is lower than for the generally calm conditions
expected through Monday. The greatest uncertainty will be for the
strength of northwest gap winds developing in the wake of the low
on Tuesday, with winds increasing mainly to gale force expected.
However, there is a chance for the low to deepen faster than
expected, and winds up to storm force on Tuesday and subsequently
higher waves above 20 ft over mainly parts of the western Gulf
cannot be ruled out at this time.

Bering Sea: A Kamchatka low exiting into the Chukchi Sea will
continue to bring its associated gale force front across the
central Bering/Aleutians on Sunday, with the winds generating
waves of 20 to 30 feet initially over the majority of the Bering
Sea. To the west, a separate North Pacific low will cross the
Western Aleutians and into the Bering, sending more southerly
winds up to gale force and 20 to 30 ft seas briefly across the
Western Bering on Sunday. The frontal system and low entering the
Bering off to the west will both weaken below gale force by early
Monday, with high pressure ridging moving into the southern Bering
and allowing predominant winds and waves across the majority of
the region to drop below 35 kt and 20 ft respectively for Monday.
Another North Pacific low will approach the Western Aleutians
from the south by late Monday night. Forecast confidence decreases
by this point in time, with uncertainty for the track and
strength of the low. Nevertheless, expect this low to be gale
force or perhaps higher, with higher easterly winds/waves
spreading into the central and western Bering/Aleutians on
Tuesday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Monday through Thursday)...

Questions are popping up almost immediately for the first part of
the extended period, largely hinging on the fate of a shortwave
trough in the eastern Bering poised to ride over top of and
consequently flatten a very amplified Pacific ridge extending
well into mainland AK at the same point in time on Monday. Deep
warm/moist southwest flow upstream from this ridge should also be
giving quite a warm-up to virtually the entire state, with the
exception of Southeast AK. The other exception will be for the
lowest elevations of Southcentral, where cold air entrenched over
valleys will be stubborn to move or mix out with winds in the low
levels not sufficiently strong enough to erode the colder air in
place. To the west, a weakening frontal system will cross into
Southwest and over the Alaska Peninsula, with the winds ahead of
the front likely to erode more of the cold air in place, resulting
in potential for mixed precipitation before colder air rushes in
behind the front and turns everything over to all snow by Monday
night.

The overall picture beyond Monday is muddier, with models diverging
with the handling of the aforementioned shortwave as it rides
over and temporarily weakens the Pacific ridge on Tuesday. The 12z
GFS and GEFS ensembles are still by far the most gung-ho with the
amplitude of the trough, depicting a fairly deep low developing
in the northern Gulf in response to the likewise sharper/stronger
upper wave digging into Southcentral by Tuesday morning. With
strong cold advection materializing behind the deepening Gulf low
and strong ridging moving back over Southwest, this would imply a
significant northwest gap wind event developing for the North
Gulf Coast and Alaska Peninsula on Tuesday. However, other
solutions are much less aggressive with the strengthening of the
trough and keep the track farther north, casting significant doubt
on this scenario and keeping the consensus that the operational
GFS is overdoing it for this system. Even so, it continues to look
likely that much of Southcentral will get a round of snow late
Monday to early Tuesday as the wave moves across and as winds
strengthen from the west.

Beyond Tuesday, there remains good consensus that the Pacific
ridge will bounce back in strength quickly farther west over the
eastern Bering/Aleutians as the shortwave trough and attendant
low exit towards Southeast AK on Wednesday. This will extend the
period of warmth for much of the Aleutians through Wednesday and
Thursday, with cool temperatures favored downstream from the ridge
over much of Southcentral. Any further details really start to
fall apart by this point, with even poorer agreement and run to
run consistency for another possible system traversing the Bering
Tuesday/Wednesday and then shifting somewhere toward the western
mainland by Thursday.
