Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A high amplitude and progressive upper level pattern is in place
across the North Pacific and Alaska. This morning there is a
ridge axis over the Copper River Basin and a trough axis over
Bristol Bay. On satellite imagery there is a low and the remnants
of an occluded front over the northern and eastern Bering. On the
radars at Bethel and King Salmon light snow is still discernible.
Overnight Thompson Pass had a wind chill of -40. Most of
Southcentral Alaska is dry this morning, however the leading edge
of the precipitation shield for the next front is just north of
the Augustine volcano (west of the Barren Islands). There are
some areas of fog and stratus by Nunivak and the Kuskokwim Bay.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in decent agreement with synoptic/large scale pattern
over the next 48 hrs. There are minor differences between the NAM
and the GFS regarding the timing of the front up Cook Inlet later
today. Additionally, there are differences with the intensity of
the next surface low that moves into the Western Bering.
There are some differences amongst the NAM, ECMWF and GFS with
the magnitude of the jet core by Saturday morning.

.AVIATION...
PANC...At the beginning of the TAF package expect VFR conditions. A
front is approaching and the cigs will decrease. Light snow is
expected by midday Thursday. MVFR and IFR conditions anticipated
for reduced cigs and period of reduced visibility.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: today
through Saturday)...

The forecast remains on track. The clear, cold, and dry
conditions that have recently dominated Southcentral are finally
coming to an end as a ridge of high pressure aloft continues its
track eastward across Southcentral. The negatively tilted ridge
axis is passing through the Copper River Basin early this morning
and will move into Canada later today. Following this ridge is a
front that extends from a Bering Sea low. Along this front, a
weak, developing triple point low will form in the western Gulf.
This system will spread light snow through Southcentral today as
it tracks across the region. Snow started for Kodiak Island early
this morning and there might be enough warm air to allow some
rain to mix in at times this afternoon. The snow will spread
northward to Kenai, Anchorage, Mat- Su Valleys, and Prince William
Sound later this morning. Anchorage is expected to get around 1
inch while the Anchorage hillside, Mat- Su Valleys, and Kenai
Peninsula could get anywhere from 1-3 inches. It's looking like
Prince William Sound areas will get the most snow from this
system, with the west (Whittier) seeing around 6 inches and the
east (Valdez and Cordova) likely getting about 2-5 inches. Pockets
of blowing snow will also be possible from eastern Turnagain Arm
through Whittier this afternoon and evening.

A new upper-level ridge will push eastward into the Gulf starting
later tonight. This will start to taper off the light snowfall
from west to east across Southcentral as the ridge moves through
on Friday. Thus, a brief break from impactful weather can be
expected for Friday under the influence of the building ridge.
Conditions look favorable for fog/stratus across much of
Southcentral Friday evening through early Saturday morning,
especially for places that receive new snow. By Saturday, however,
another front will move eastward across Southcentral and produce
light snow throughout the day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA AND THE BERING
SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The front that brought blowing and at times heavy snow throughout
Southwest Alaska is beginning to push out of the region and into
Southcentral. As it departs, some light to moderate snow will
continue this morning over Bristol Bay and interior areas, only to
be replaced by some light showers behind the front. Meanwhile,
another low has made it's way into the Western Bering and will
take a similar track to the storm currently impacting the area.
The main difference between this next system and the current one
is the lack of high pressure over the interior. This will allow
for more warm air to make it's way into the region, with southerly
winds and warm temperatures reducing the likelihood of blowing
snow. Instead, expect heavier snow to reach the Kuskokwim Delta
early Friday morning, with a brief period of rain or a mix of rain
and snow possible Friday morning from Kipnuk to Hooper Bay. Cold
air is expected to quickly follow the initial warm front, which
will transition precipitation back to all snow if rain were to
mix in. The front will move slowly east across Southwest through
the day Friday and into Saturday morning, bringing another round
of snow to the region. Quick on its tail will be another system
moving into the Western Bering, with widespread storm force winds
expected over the Western Aleutians. The push of warm air with
this system is expected to be considerable, with rain looking
likely for Southwest Saturday evening. Stay tuned.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Saturday through Monday)...

Gulf of Alaska: An area of weak low pressure persists over the
northern Gulf from Saturday to Monday. Winds will develop out of
the northwest through the Alaska Peninsula and into the western
Gulf on Saturday behind a dissipating frontal system, with peak
winds near the Barrens and southwest of Kodiak Island up to gales
possible from Saturday afternoon to early Sunday. Winds will
subside to small craft or lower on Sunday and Monday as a high
pressure ridge moves over the Gulf. Forecast confidence is
generally high.

Bering Sea: A strong low will track northwest along or just east
of Kamchatka from Saturday to Sunday, and then cross into the
Chukchi Sea by Monday. An associated front will bring a swath of
southerly gale to low-end storm force winds across the
western/central Aleutians and Bering along with 20 to 30 foot
seas between Saturday and Sunday, with winds progressing slowly
east with the front through Sunday morning. The front will begin
to weaken as it stalls out near the eastern Bering/Aleutians by
late in the day Sunday, with winds likely to drop below gale force
along the entire frontal boundary by Sunday night. Confidence is
high for gale to possibly storm force winds with the front, with
some uncertainty remaining for how quickly the front weakens on
Sunday. Southwest winds to gale force will also be possible over
the far western Bering near the parent low as it tracks north on
Sunday. Winds and waves will begin to subside Monday as a high
pressure ridge moves over the Bering. Potential picks up for
easterly winds reaching at least gale force late Monday near the
western Aleutians as a deep North Pacific low approaches the
forecast area from the south.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Sunday through Wednesday)...

A quite anomalous but predominantly less impactful pattern is
expected to evolve during the course of the forecast period. At
the start of the period on Sunday, an extremely amplified longwave
pattern will be taking shape as a strong Pacific ridge expands
into much of mainland AK. Upstream, a very strong Kamchatka low
will be approaching northeastern Siberia, supporting deep
meridional and south to southwest flow across the Bering and up
towards the crest of the Pacific ridge moving into Southwest.
This deep fetch of southerly flow expanding from lower latitudes
of the North Pacific will bring a firehose of impressive
warm/moist advection that will flood 7-10°C above average 850 mb
temperatures into much of the forecast area, with parts of
Southcentral perhaps escaping the surge of warm air initially.
This will be especially true across low valleys near sea level,
with both operational and ensemble model surface temperature
projections strongly hinting at low elevations (including the Mat-
Su Valleys and Copper River Basin) holding on to much of the cold
air in place near the lowest few hundred feet or so, at least
until Monday when the corridor of southwest flow begins to intrude
farther east.

It will meanwhile be a very different story for Southwest and the
Alaska Peninsula, where any lingering cold air in place will
become mostly scoured out and replaced by temperatures at or above
freezing on Sunday with southwest winds out ahead of a weakening
front approaching from the Bering. This brings some concerns for
any precipitation moving across Southwest in tandem with the
frontal system on Sunday and Monday, with periods of light sleet
or freezing rain possible where cold air damming over inland
valleys keeps surface temperatures at or below freezing. Even
where air temperatures warm above the freezing mark, any rain
falling on the still very cold ground/ice surface could still
freeze on contact. The threat for mixed precipitation will end
abruptly on Monday night as a much colder air mass moves back into
all of Southwest behind the front, turning any lingering falling
precipitation to all snow.

Looking back east again, the brief extension of warm/southwest
flow into Southcentral is most likely to occur ahead of a
potential shortwave trough. This trough will attempt to ride over
the ridge axis and flatten it out temporarily as it lifts into
Southwest AK on Monday, then dive south towards the Gulf on
Tuesday. Models vary with the progression and evolution of the
shortwave trough, with the GFS and the respective ensemble suite
depicting the trough moving faster into the Gulf/Southcentral and
becoming sharper and deeper on its approach to the northern Gulf
early Tuesday morning. The ECMWF and its ensemble mean are still
showing a much more diffuse and slower trough that would not make
it into the northern Gulf until Tuesday evening. Even with these
differences, its likely that a quick thump of snow will move
across Southcentral with the trough passage. This would be some
point on Tuesday or Wednesday, and snow is most likely with
terrain induced lift along/west of the Talkeetna, Chugach and
Kenai Mountains as westerly flow advects colder air back in from
the northwest through Wednesday morning. The Pacific ridge will
quickly rebound as the aforementioned shortwave exits to the east,
with a pronounced, sharp ridge axis extending back across the
Bering on Wednesday. This will keep most of the Bering/Aleutians
abnormally warm, with contrastingly colder air possibly allowed to
spill back over most of Southcentral going into the middle of
next week.

...Localized areas of blowing snow in Whittier and Portage
Valley...

Light snow combined with localized east wind gusting to 20 to 25
mph will produce blowing snow and reduced visibilities in
Whittier and through Portage Valley this afternoon. Snow along the
Seward Highway corridor will remain quite light. Though the
movement of cars will blow snow around, visibilities should
generally remain greater than 1 mile.
