Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The high amplitude ridge has shifted over the western Alaska
mainland with troughing over the western Bering. The hurricane-
force low from yesterday is well into the occlusion process,
although a few areas are still measuring storm force winds on
ASCAT near the Rat Islands. Focus has now shifted to the storm's
front, which can be seen moving across the eastern Bering on
satellite this morning. Gusty winds along the front's leading
edge are expected to bring blowing snow to the Southwest
coastline, prompting the issuance of winter weather advisories for
Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim Delta. To the east, Southcentral
remains under high pressure, which has resulted in mostly clear
skies and cold temperatures. A few areas of fog and low stratus
are apparent on satellite over the Knik and Turnagain Arms.
Outflow winds have decreased overnight as surface high pressure
breaks down over the interior and the polar low over the Yukon
Territory moves east.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good agreement with the track and intensity of
the Bering low. Discrepancies begin Thursday morning with the
formation of a triple point low along the front as it crosses the
AKPen. By Thursday night the upper level shortwave associated with
this low becomes disconnected from the jet stream, resulting in a
fairly static surface low. The differences in the location and
compactness of the low have fairly substantial differences for
snow accumulation over Kodiak Island and the eastern Kenai
Peninsula. As a result, forecast confidence is fair to average
past 48 hours.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist on Wednesday.
Patchy fog may form in the vicinity of the terminal again during
the morning hours. A period of light snow is likely to begin around
midnight as a weak shortwave moves through the area. This will
lower ceilings to MVFR criteria. Snow is expected to be very
light with accumulation less than 0.5 inches expected. Downsloping
should bring an end to the snow sometime Thursday morning but
overrunning moisture should keep ceilings MVFR through the end of
the TAF period.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Friday night)...

The frigid temperatures in place across much of Southcentral will
be short-lived as a storm system moves into the region tonight
through Thursday, leading to gradual warming. The forecast for
this storm is generally on track, though there are the typical
model differences in storm track which will impact where the
heaviest snow sets up. A frontal system currently over the eastern
Bering Sea will reach the western Gulf this evening, with snow
spreading northward from Kodiak Island to the Kenai Peninsula
ahead of the front and an upper level short-wave trough. The
complicating factors (and where the model solutions differ) are
on the track of a triple point low which forms near Kodiak Island
this evening and the timing of development of an upper level
closed center. The surface low track will greatly impact
precipitation type and snow accumulation for Kodiak Island.
Snow amounts were increased for Kodiak in the latest forecast
based on a low track east of the island. If the low tracks farther
west, then we can expect more warm air with a quick transition to
rain and less snow accumulation. There could however be more snow
on the back side of the low Thursday night.

Meanwhile, snow will spread across nearly all of Southcentral
tonight. The primary forcing for the snow will be the upper level
short-wave, along with some weak overrunning and the more
localized upslope flow. As soon as the upper level low closes off,
the trough will shear apart and snow will diminish over inland
areas of Southcentral. This looks like it will hurt Anchorage and
the Matanuska Valley the most and have cut amounts back to one
half inch or less. Expect higher amounts along the western Kenai
Peninsula coast northward to the Susitna Valley. This set-up will
be particularly good for western Prince William Sound/eastern
Kenai Peninsula as the low stalls somewhere over the northwest
Gulf Thursday, leading to a prolonged period of snow through at
least Friday. With east to northeast low level flow throughout the
event, this looks most favorable for the immediate coast,
including Whittier, with lesser amounts as you head inland across
the eastern Kenai Peninsula. However, with uncertainties in low
track, will need to continue to refine the snow accumulation
forecast for these areas.

The storm will dissipate Friday night as an upper level ridge
approaches from the west, pushing the trough off to the south and
east and eventually setting up northerly offshore flow once
again.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

As seen on satellite, the front that has been monitored the last
few days is slowly approaching the Southwest coast. With this,
blowing snow is anticipated with the initial frontal push for both
the Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Dillingham west. Due to the slowing
of the front, Winter Weather Advisories for blowing snow are in
effect today from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. for both areas. As the front
pushes inland later tonight, snowfall will continue across the
region.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The front that is slowly approaching the Southwest coast is
currently stationed over the eastern Aleutians with a rain/snow
mix continuing across the area. The low is currently stationed
north of Shemya and is anticipated to move into the north-central
Bering this evening. Expect widespread gales across the Bering
Sea with this system heading into Friday, with the potential for
storms here and there. Precipitation will continue throughout this
timeframe, becoming a more showery pattern once the low moves
across the Mainland Friday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5): Friday through Sunday...

Gulf of Alaska: Models diverge through the forecast period, so
confidence decreases through Sun. A Northern Gulf low exits
through the Southern Gulf late Sat. This wind wrapped low brings
widespread small craft winds and waves over the Gulf with local
gale force winds along the North Gulf Coast diminishing over the
Northern and Eastern Gulf Sat. A strong gradient west of the low
maintains Northwesterly gale force winds from the Barren Islands
southwest to the Shumagin Islands through Sun. Wave heights to 17
feet subsiding over the Northern Gulf for Sat, and building to 25
feet across the Southern Gulf through Sun.

Aleutians/Bering: Models diverge through the forecast period, so
confidence decreases through Sun. The Southwest Alaska low
continues inland sat. Widespread gale force winds and waves exit
through the Eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula for Sat. A
front entering the Western Aleutians and Bering Fri night moves to
the Central Aleutians and Bering by Sun. Widespread gale force
winds over the Aleutians and Bering with areas of storm force
winds over the Northern Bering move with the front through Sun.
Wave heights to 25 feet subside near the Alaska Peninsula Sat,
and build to 25 feet over the Western and Central Aleutians and
Bering through Sun.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)

A pattern change is likely during the extended period. The pattern
will begin with an upper trough extending across the Alaska
mainland and an upper ridge extending across the Bering/Aleutians
Saturday morning and transition to an upper trough over the
Bering/Aleutians and an upper ridge over the Alaskan mainland by
Tuesday. In a nutshell, this is a cold and fairly dry pattern for
Southcentral and Southwest on Saturday and Sunday. The cold air
will become more moderated on Monday and Tuesday when the upper
ridge moves over Southcentral and Southwest Alaska. This pattern
will promote dry conditions as well due to continuous offshore
flow. A more active weather pattern is expected across the
Bering/Aleutians as upper level troughing becomes the dominant
pattern. There is good ensemble agreement in the longwave pattern
during the extended period which means forecast confidence in the
broad overall pattern is above average. However, there is larger
disagreement in models with resolving the placement and intensity
of lows in the western Bering which will make for a lower
forecasting confidence in that area.
