.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
An upper level trough is extending from the Bering Strait, over
the eastern Bering Sea, and into the North Pacific. At the
surface, a low is under this trough just south of the Alaska
Peninsula. This low has been the main Bering Sea weather-maker for
the past few days. A stronger low can be seen on satellite south
of the Gulf of Alaska. This low center is heading northeast, but a
plume of moisture can be seen heading northward to the north Gulf
Coast. This moisture, in association with a surface trough
extending out of the low and toward the eastern Prince William
Sound region will be the source of snowfall over Southcentral
tonight into Thursday.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The main model issue today is subtle, but important. It is the
westward progression of the inverted trough moving along the Gulf
coast from east-to-west overnight into tomorrow. The location
where this trough stops progressing westward and then stalls
before dissipating as it is then pushed back to the east is where
the heaviest snowfall will occur. Models had been in good
agreement with stalling it over the Anchorage and Matanuska Valley
region, but later model runs are wavering between having this
location or stalling it out farther east and keeping most of the
snowfall over the Chugach mountains with little making as far west
as Anchorage. That is the forecast problem of the day.

Other than that, models are in good synoptic agreement into the
weekend over the Gulf of Alaska and most of southern mainland
Alaska. There is still a bit of spread on the development of a low
along the front moving into the Bering Sea on Friday, though most
models have a similar track on where this low will move after
that.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist through most of the night and
then snow will lower conditions to at least MVFR and possibly IFR.
There is still a bit of uncertainty as to whether the heavier snow
will set up over the airport or farther east over the Chugach
Mountains.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Wednesday Afternoon through Saturday)...

Snow likely for most of Southcentral tonight through Thursday,
then colder as we end the week with outflow winds late Thursday
into Friday.

The upper level ridge over Southcentral will shift east as low
pressure moves north across eastern Gulf and an upper level
trough moves east from Southwest Alaska. This low pressure over
the Gulf will bring another front to the Prince William Sound area
with rain and snow tonight. As this low pushes north an inverted
trough will form and move over the Chugach Mountains tonight and into
the Anchorage and MATSU valleys extending south into the Kenai
Peninsula by Thursday morning. Upward vertical motion will
increase by daybreak on Thursday as a 70 to 80 knot jet streak
moves over the area this will put the Anchorage and MATSU Valleys
in the right rear quadrant of the jet enhancing upward vertical motion.
This trough and upward motion will result in bands of snow
forming with 2 to 4 inches expected from the eastern Kenai
Peninsula and up towards Anchorage and the MATSU valleys. Valdez
and Seward will see a couple of inches of snow and Cordova may see
around an inch. Clouds will begin to clear as we head into Friday
morning so expect some patchy fog and low clouds possible
Thursday night into Friday morning around Cook Inlet to include
Kenai, Anchorage area, and parts of the MAT valley. As the upper
trough moves east tomorrow evening this will shift the snow to the
east with an inch or two possible across the Copper River Basin
Thursday night and Friday. Outflow winds will increase late
tomorrow into Friday.

On Saturday another front and low pressure system will track
across the Gulf and this will bring another round of rain and
snow for mainly coastal locations from Kodiak City up towards
Cordova and Prince William Sound, while the rest of Southcentral
will remain dry on Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A Blowing Snow Advisory remains in effect through 9pm AKST tonight
as Doppler Radar combined with observations show a snow band
bringing light to moderate snow to the Kuskokwim Delta (Bethel on
westward) with 20 to 25 mph northeasterly winds and visibilities
reaching 1/2 mile at times. The snow and blowing snow is expected
to gradually taper off this evening. Otherwise, the pattern will
remain quiet until Saturday when a front is expected to move near
Southwest Alaska. The front on Saturday is expected to bring
widespread snow to the AKPEN. There is a higher degree of
uncertainty on the extent of the precipitation into the northern
Bristol Bay area as there are different solutions on how far north
the edge of this front will extend. The offshore flow pattern
will help keep the cold air in place keeping the precipitation all
snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A front will move across the Bering/Aleutians this evening through
Saturday. Widespread gale force winds are expected in the western
and central Bering/Aleutians tonight through Friday morning before
the front begins to weaken. Winds will ease to below gale force
across the Aleutians Friday morning, with the only area of
widespread gale force winds being over the north central Bering
Sea at that point. This front will bring a mix of rain and snow to
the Aleutians with rain being the dominant form of precipitation
in the mix. There is potential for a weak low to develop along
this front over the eastern Aleutians Friday night into Saturday
morning, though there is only moderate confidence at best as
guidance shows different solutions in the position and intensity
of this low.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Saturday through Monday)...

Bering Sea: An area of easterly gales over Bristol Bay will
diminish early Saturday morning. Heavy freezing spray will remain
possible through the day near the ice edge. Sub-gales and below 20
ft seas will continue through the weekend. Generally southerly
gales and greater than 20 ft seas will approach the western Bering
Monday, though the timing, strength and exact position remain
uncertain.

Gulf of Alaska: Brief easterly gales will possibly develop over
the Barren Islands and southern Cook Inlet Saturday evening,
though seas are not expected to exceed 20 ft. Model solutions
diverge thereafter, however westerly gales and greater than 20 ft
seas are possible in the southern Gulf on Sunday. Confidence is
actually greater on Monday as a low develops south of Prince
William Sound leading to potential high-end northwesterly gales
and building seas between the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through Wednesday)...

A series of lows will move over the Gulf through Tuesday leading
to offshore flow and cooler temperatures across much of the
mainland and precipitation along the coast. Snow is possible
across the Copper River Basin as the GFS shows a relatively
strong upper low tracking over Southwest Alaska Sunday into
Monday. All models show an upper ridge moving over Southcentral on
Tuesday which would bring warmer temperatures, before a trailing
trough and its associated front lead to more precipitation chances
for Wednesday. A series of upper troughs and surface fronts are
likewise expected to persist across the Bering/Aleutians through
mid-week. Overall model agreement is quite good, however any time
there is a pattern shift, it takes some time for them to hone in
on specific details and thus confidence remains average.
