Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A highly amplitude pattern aloft has an upper level ridge over the
Gulf of Alaska and an upper level trough from the Alaska Range
north and east into Canada. An upper level shortwave is currently
over Southwest. An upper level ridge over the western Aleutians
is closely followed by an upper level trough currently stationed
off Kamchatka Peninsula.

At the surface, an area of weakening low pressure remains over the
central Gulf with an area of small craft winds and waves to the
north and east of it. Snow is continuing across Southcentral this
morning as seen on radar. Temperatures are not nearly as cold as
they were yesterday, with cloud cover helping to bring them up
through the overnight hours. Temperatures have started to come
down from the brief warm up earlier across the southwest with
dissipating snow showers seen across Bethel and King Salmon. Gale
force winds and waves can be seen on observations along the
western Bering and Aleutians as the front continues across the
area.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good agreement this morning as to the synoptic
scale. Finer details, including a low forming along a front in the
eastern Bering, remain difficult to hone in on.

.AVIATION...

PANC...MVFR/IFR conditions continue due to snowfall. As the snow
tapers off this morning, low stratus will persist across the area
with a chance for some fog to potentially reduce visibility.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3 Wed
through Fri)...

An upper level wave that brought snow to most of Southcentral
overnight has moved through the Cook Inlet region as of early this
morning and should clear the Copper River Basin by late this
afternoon. Clearing in the Cook Inlet region will not be quick as
stratus and patchy fog is likely to develop behind this wave and
persist into tonight. Farther south toward Homer there is a better
chance for clearing later today but Anchorage will likely remain
cloudy.

Thompson Pass continues to see persistent temperatures well below
zero with sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph. These wind chills have
been running from 40 to 45 below all night. The winds are
expected to diminish this morning as the upper level wave moves
through, but as we see over and over, once these winds get going,
it takes the pressure gradient relaxing greatly before they
diminish.

An upper level ridge amplifies over Southcentral on Thursday and
should clear things out around the region then, but this will not
last long as an upper level low pushes into the area again Friday
which will bring in another quick shot of snow Friday through
Friday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Wednesday
through Friday)...

Light snow is tapering off this morning over eastern Bristol Bay
and the Lower Kuskokwim Valley. The winter weather has been
replaced by low stratus and patchy fog throughout the region. A
few flurries are possible over the Y-K delta today as an upper
level trough moves through the area. Otherwise, calm winds,
seasonal temperatures, and overcast skies are expected before the
next front approaches Thursday afternoon. As with the forecast
earlier this week, the question of whether or not a low pressure
system will form along the front remains the most difficult aspect
of the forecast. Regardless, snow is expected to reach the Y-K
Delta Thursday night and extend farther south into Bristol Bay by
Friday morning. The speed of frontal propagation across the
interior remains uncertain, but at this time it looks like the
interior will receive snow by Friday afternoon or evening. Winds
are not expected to be as strong with this front due to lack of a
strong surface high over the interior like we saw on Monday. As
such, blowing snow should be less of an issue with the dominant
impact from the front being light snow.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Wednesday through Friday)...

Quiet conditions across the eastern Bering today as a gale force
front moves slowly east. The front is just west of Adak this
morning and is expected to reach the Pribilof Islands and Dutch
Harbor Thursday morning. Winds, by that time, should fall to
around 30 mph with rain and snow expected. By Thursday afternoon
the front will reach the AKPen bringing rain and then snow on
Friday morning as cold air moves in behind the front. The weather
then becomes active again over the western Aleutians Friday
afternoon with storm force winds possible near Shemya.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A low lifts along the Alaska Peninsula to form an
elongated trough along the North Gulf Coast. Model tracks and
development vary, but confidence is good through the forecast
period. Widespread high end gale force winds and waves move across
the Gulf Friday night through Sunday, with a lingering area of
small craft winds from the Barren Island into the Gulf Sunday.
Winds will be easterly along the North Gulf Coast, and westerly
over the Gulf. Wave heights build to 18 feet Saturday over the
Gulf, subsiding Sunday.

Bering Sea: A weakening low tracks northward over the eastern
Bering through Saturday. Widespread small craft winds and waves
dissipate Saturday. Model tracks and development are mixed, so
confidence is low. A well developed low and front enters the
western Bering late Friday. Widespread high end gale force winds
with the front move into the central Aleutians and Bering for
Sunday. Wave heights to 20 feet on the Pacific side of the Alaska
Peninsula subsiding Sunday. Waves to 21 feet Pacific side of the
Aleutians, 15 feet Bering side Saturday and Sunday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

An upper level ridging pattern will extend across the
Bering/Aleutians and Alaskan Mainland on Saturday and Sunday.
This will help bring warmer temperatures across Southcentral and
Southwest as well as the Bering/Aleutians for this weekend.
Uncertainty increases on Monday as differences in ensemble
solutions arise during this time. The GFS and ECMWF ensembles show
a deep upper trough building in from the northeast while the
Canadian ensemble keeps this upper trough far to the north as well
as keeps this trough much weaker. For now, a blend of the
GFS/ECMWF ensemble is the preferred solution which will help
amplify the ridge across the Bering/Aleutians. This amplifying
ridge is likely to assist in driving an upper trough across the
Alaskan Mainland during early next week which will help decrease
temperatures across Southcentral and Southwest Alaska. Overall,
this pattern will support quiet weather across the Alaskan
mainland. Over the Bering/Aleutians there is a better chance of
storm activity, particularly in the western Bering/Aleutians as
the upper level pattern will support storms to move northeastward
along the Kamchatka Peninsula.
