Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level low was seen on water vapor imagery this morning
across the Gulf of Alaska. This upper low was moving slowly
southward while continuing to weaken. Weak upper level ridging is
present across much of Southcentral this morning. As a result,
quiet conditions are in place across much of Southcentral this
morning with a mostly clear and moonlit sky. Temperatures across
the area range from the single digits in the Susitna Valley to
upper single digits and teens across Anchorage, the Matanuska
Valley and the Kenai Peninsula. The cold spot this morning is
Willow with 7 degrees below zero and the typical cold spot Gulkana
in the Copper River Basin at 16 degrees below zero.

A weak upper level shortwave was seen propagating through the
Middle Kuskokwim Valley this morning. This upper level wave is
responsible for the flurries and light snow showers across the
region. Much of the rest of Southwest was quiet and mostly clear with
the only caveat being some areas of low stratus around Bethel and
Dillingham. Temperatures range from single digits below zero
across the YK Delta to teens across Bristol Bay and single digits
for the Middle Kuskokwim Valley.

Lastly, an upper level ridge was seen across parts of the eastern
Bering. Cold air advection with some upper level support out ahead
of the ridge axis was bringing strong gusty winds to the eastern
Aleutians and AKPEN this morning with the typical stronger winds
out of bays and passes. A gale force frontal system to the west
of the ridge axis was bringing gusty winds and unsettled weather
to the western and central Aleutian Chain.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model guidance remains in fairly good agreement on the synoptic
scale features out through Day 3. The main forecast challenges
will be determining how strong the winds will get for the local
effect edit areas across Southcentral through the next 3 days as a
cold snap moves into the area. Across Southwest Alaska, the main
issue arises when the frontal system currently impacting the
western Bering tries to move onshore in the Monday night to
Tuesday timeframe. This has the potential to bring precipitation
type issues to the area.

PANC...VFR conditions and light northerly winds will persist.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Monday night)...
Frigid temperatures will settle across Southcentral the next few
days, along with localized strong gap winds. A high amplitude
ridge over the Bering Sea will slowly approach Southcentral
through tomorrow. Cold air advection on the leading edge will
move from Southwest Alaska into the western Gulf today while
multiple lows spin over the Gulf and serve to provide a strong
east-west pressure gradient. This will lead to strong winds and
freezing spray, especially along Shelikof Strait up to Kamishak
Bay and the Barren Islands.

A few snow showers will linger over western Prince William Sound
this morning, but will then be pushed southward into the Gulf as
northerly offshore flow increases. A weak short-wave trough
dropping down the east side of the ridge will phase over
Southcentral late tonight/early Sunday with a much stronger
trough dropping southward across mainland Alaska. Expect clouds
and areas of light snow to develop ahead of these troughs, roughly
from eastern Prince William Sound to the Copper River Basin. The
exact timing of each of these waves will determine where the snow
develops. In any case, snow will be light and short-lived as the
newly phased trough continues to dig southeastward into the Yukon
on Sunday.

Polar air will dive southward across the state behind the trough,
bringing one of the coldest air masses of the winter season to
Southcentral. This will lead to gusty winds through mountain
passes as well as bays along the coast. As is typical when cold
air dives southward into the Gulf, the strongest winds will be
along coastal gaps such as Seward/Resurrection Bay, Whittier/Passage
Canal, Valdez/Thompson Pass, and the Copper River Delta. This
particular set-up favors Valdez and the Copper River Delta and
have upped winds quite a bit in the latest forecast. At the
moment, the forcing does not look strong enough to reach warning
level winds (75 mph), but it may not be far off. Cold air
advection is moderate to strong, but there won't be a really deep
low in the Gulf to ratchet up pressure gradients. Meanwhile, aloft
the Jet will be overhead, while many high wind events occur on
the polar side of the jet where subsidence tends to be strongest.

While the gaps will see the strongest winds, do expect most of
Southcentral to see at least a little bit of wind out of this
Sunday through Monday. The presence of any wind at all will
limit how far surface temperature fall while also lowering wind
chill temperatures. It looks like the coldest night will be Monday
night/Tuesday morning when winds will likely lighten up. Expect
all but coastal locations will have a good shot of dropping below
zero, with the typical cold interior cold spots likely dropping
as low as -20 to -30 degrees.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The arctic air mass continues southward into southwestern Alaska
this morning with temperatures quickly dropping into the negatives
in some locations. Pockets of fog and low stratus have been seen
across the Kuskokwim Valley and coastal areas on satellite and via
observations. However, due to the dryness associated with the
polar air mass, cloud cover should continue to diminish throughout
the day. This pattern will continue through Sunday night when an
approaching front brings warmer temperatures aloft and an increase
in winds towards the coast. Wind chill concerns for coastal
locations are a possibility tomorrow night as thickness values
indicate a continuation of cold air at the surface despite warm
air aloft.

Winds continue to taper off across the eastern Aleutians as the
remnants of the previous low move fully out of the region. Behind
this, cold air advection will continue until it is overtaken by
the next front currently stationed over the central Bering. This
front will move eastward through Sunday night bringing warm
temperatures, gale force winds and rain across the Bering Sea and
Aleutian Chain.

Gulf of Alaska:

Light winds and low seas will persist.

Aleutians/Bering:

A front will extend across the eastern Bering Monday.
Southeasterly storm force winds are possible northwest of Saint
Matthew Island between a strong Arctic High and a series of lows
in the western Bering. Waves may exceed 25 ft in this area given
the long southerly fetch. Otherwise, good agreement exists
indicating a weak gale-force front entering the western Bering
Tuesday evening and tracking eastward through Wednesday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through
Friday)...

A progressive pattern will continue across the Bering/Aleutians
next week as a front will extend from Saint Matthew Island across
the eastern Bering. This will bring gusty southeasterly winds
(strongest farther north) and moderate rain to this area. Another
front will bring similar conditions west to east across the
Aleutians Tuesday through Thursday. High pressure looks to move
into the central and eastern Bering/Aleutians by the end of the
week, though the timing is still in question.

Farther east, the aforementioned front will track across the
mainland Tuesday into Wednesday leading to snow accumulations in
Southwest Alaska. Amounts will lessen farther east as the front
dissipates, though accumulating snow appears likely in Anchorage
and the Mat-Su late Tuesday. Precipitation will again track across
the Southwest on Thursday. Agreement degrades thereafter, however
the generally active pattern looks to continue into the weekend.
