Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Anchorage AK 632 PM AKST Tue Nov 30 2021 .ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS... A broad upper level trough is in place across the state while a jet streak at 300 mb remains well south of the state, draped across the eastern Gulf. Anchoring this trough is a complex low, currently centered over the northern Gulf. Surface observations and radar imagery confirm snow spreading in across Southcentral this afternoon while coastal areas across Prince William Sound have remained rain or a rain/snow mix at times. Meanwhile farther west, northerly flow and snow showers continue across Southwest Alaska as colder air wraps around the backside of this complex low. Widespread northerly flow across the eastern Bering has led to persistent cold air advection and snow showers along the eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula. A weak upper level ridge is in place over the western Aleutians, however it continues to weaken as an incoming Kamchatka low approaches the Bering. && .MODEL DISCUSSION... Models continue to align on the large scale progression of the Gulf low as it moves inland, centering on the Prince William Sound. Behind it, model consensus moves the elongated low over the Bering Sea in behind the Gulf low, reinforcing it with a new injection of upper level support, extending it's life, and impacts on the ground across southcentral and the larger Gulf of Alaska coastline. A northerly flow continues in the wake of the elongated low across the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Island chain. As the low propagates eastward, models hone in a pattern shift as a more progressive pattern looks to take hold beginning with a stronger incoming storm force system affecting the western islands late Wednesday through the end of the week. && .AVIATION... PANC...Periods of IFR conditions due to visibilities and lowered ceilings are expected to continue through tonight. Ceilings and visibility will remain low tonight as well. Conditions are expected to gradually improve to MVFR after 01/12Z. Winds are expected to remain 10kts or less over the course of the period. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tonight through Friday afternoon)... An upper level trough remains negatively tilted over the Alaska Peninsula this evening with diffluence downstream of the trough, overspreading much of Southcentral, Beneath favorable forcing for ascent exists a compact area of low pressure which has slowly lifted into Prince William Sound. This low has been accompanied by plentiful moisture, which has manifested itself into rain and snow showers from Cordova to the Anchorage Bowl and southward into the Kenai Peninsula. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect on the western coast, including the towns of Homer, Anchor Point, Ninilchik, Kenai and Soldotna. Periods of light to moderate snow will promote reduced visibility into Wednesday with accumulations to cause hazardous road conditions. Current snowfall over the Anchorage Bowl appears to be breaking up in coverage which should should leave 2 to 3 inches of snow on the ground with locally higher amounts on the Hillside. Also of note, strong cold air advection associated with the Alaska Peninsula upper trough continues to overspread the western gulf. Strong outflow winds to gale force will become more prominent across Kamishak Bay and portions of the Shelikof Strait on Wednesday and Thursday with storm force winds possible near and west of the Barren Islands. Initial winds tonight into tomorrow morning will also be funneled into Kachemak Bay with gusts ranging from 25 to 35 knots. By Friday the upper trough over southern Alaska will finally shift east across the Gulf. Westerly outflow winds spilling out of the Alaska Peninsula and Kamishak Bay will gradually wind down. Dense cold air is then forecast to filter out of the passes from Seward, Prince William Sound and Copper Delta as west winds become northerly along the northern Gulf Coast. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: tonight through Friday)... An elongated low currently over the Southwest will spend the remainder of the evening feeding energy into a Gulf low. Light snowfall will will across the region through the night and into tomorrow. Cold, northerly, Arctic flow produces sub-zero temperatures essentially everywhere, aside from the immediate coastal regions and southern portions of the AKPen, who will remain just above zero during daylight hours. Winds will continue to be gusty across the Kuskokwim Delta tonight, with temperatures reaching as low as 20 below zero, warranting the need for a Wind Chill Advisory. The Winter Weather Advisory for the Southern AKPen, specifically near Cold Bay and King Cove, will continue into late tonight, with snow showers and blowing snow creating visibility issues at times. These snow showers, gusty winds, and visibility reductions will extend northwards and spill into areas near Port Heiden and Pilot Point as well. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: tonight through Friday)... A longwave trough pattern persists over Southwest Alaska, producing northerly flow along the eastern Bering. The associated arctic air mass pulls colder air across the Southwest coastal waters and through the gaps and passes of the Eastern Aleutians and southern AKPen. As a result, expect increasingly gusty winds to persist through tomorrow. Additionally, snow showers are likely to continue through the night across the southeast Bering and areas south of the southern AKPen. A building ridge moves into the western Bering Wednesday afternoon, followed quickly by a front extending off a Kamchatka low. The incoming front moves into the western Bering Thursday morning, with widespread southwesterly storm force winds moving eastward, diminishing to high end gales by Thursday night. A band of precipitation, mostly rain or a rain/snow mix, will move west to east along the front as well, reaching the Southwest coast by Friday morning. && .MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Friday through Sunday)... Bering/Aleutians... Forecast confidence remains above average from Friday and Saturday as high pressure extends over the central Bering. Slightly lower confidence along the western and eastern Bering where the overall synoptic pattern will allow for small areas of gale force winds. Confidence decreases on Sunday as a front moves across the Bering due to differences in placement and intensity between solutions with respect to the evolution of this front. Gulf of Alaska... Forecast confidence remains moderate at best from Friday through Sunday. However, winds are expected to remain below gale force and no high seas are expected during this period. && .LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Saturday through Tuesday)... The cold temperatures are expected to continue throughout the extended forecast period. Teleconnections support upper level ridging over the eastern Bering Sea/Aleutians and Southwest Alaska with upper level troughing over the eastern Alaskan mainland. This set up will allow for broad-scale northwesterly flow and cold air advection across Southcentral. There is a decent degree of ensemble agreement that below normal 850 mb temperatures are expected during this period. The warmest portion of the extended period which is also when there will be the best chance for snow in Southcentral will be on Monday afternoon as an upper trough moves across the Bering Sea, thus pushing the aforementioned upper ridge eastward and allowing for southwesterly flow aloft across Southcentral. With respect to the snow forecast, there is uncertainty on exact snowfall amounts Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning due to differences in deterministic guidance. However, the overall pattern is conducive for snow across Southcentral with the highest snowfall expected to remain on the windward side of the mountains and lowest across leeward locations. Farther out west, a brief warm up is expected on Saturday and Sunday across Southwest Alaska due to the aforementioned broad upper-level ridging across the eastern Bering Sea/Aleutians. However, this warm up will only be temporary due to the aforementioned upper trough moving eastward across the Bering/Aleutians towards Southwest on Tuesday. For the Bering/Aleutians, there is low confidence in the forecast during the extended period due to significant differences in position and intensity of two low pressure systems and the front associated with this lows Saturday through Tuesday. && .AFC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
