Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A low that was responsible for the major snowfall event over
parts of Southcentral on Wednesday and Thursday, including over
much of the Mat-Su Valleys, is now departing as it slowly fills
and drifts south over the northern Gulf. Broad northerly flow
continues to the north of the center across mainland AK, with
Arctic air flooding into nearly everywhere but the Aleutian
Islands. Outflow and gap winds are continuing across the typical
locations from the AKPEN to Southcentral, including Resurrection
Bay, Thompson Pass and the Copper River Delta. Cloud streets
are visible on GOES-17 satellite products south of the AKPEN
where northwest flow and cold air advection are strongest in the
wake of a shortwave now moving south of Kodiak Island. Clear and
very cold conditions are prevailing over much of Southwest and
Southcentral along with mainly north to northwest winds.

To the west, a strong ridge axis extends over most of the Eastern
Bering/Aleutians, bringing a break in the weather across much of
the region for now. Farther west, a low near Attu is tracking
along a storm force front, and strong southerly gales to storms
now cover nearly the entire expanse of the western Bering. The
front is bringing mainly rain as it crosses the Aleutian Chain
from west to east.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in very good agreement for nearly all noteworthy
features through the end of the weekend. Thus, forecast confidence
for the next several days is above average. Some differences with
the handling of the front currently in the western Bering appear
by early next week as it moves into the Southwest. Models are in
good agreement that a triple point low will form along the front
along the AKPEN or to the west of Kodiak Island by Sunday morning,
and all solutions show the low move towards PWS late Sunday into
Monday. The exact track and timing of the low as it approaches the
sound vary somewhat from run-to-run, and this will have
significant implications for the snowfall potential across parts
of Southcentral on Sunday and Monday with this next possibly
impactful system.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2...Fri and
Sat)...
After the biggest snowfall of the season for much of the Anchorage
area on Wednesday, we continue to track into a much quieter
weather pattern to end the week. The low responsible for bringing
all of that snow to the area is now pulling away quickly to the
southeast across the Gulf of AK. An upper level trough from the
Arctic is helping to usher it away from the mainland. This is
allowing cold air to settle in across much of Southcentral. This
also means that many of the typical outflow wind areas (Valdez,
Thompson Pass, Whittier, Seward, etc) are seeing gusty conditions
with cold air advection. Places that saw fresh snow fall over the
past few days could see some blowing snow as these winds
resuspend some of that snow. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for the Thompson Pass area to highlight this potential and
some gusty winds.

A shortwave ridge of high pressure will push over the area tonight
into Saturday. This should produce enough of an offshore gradient
to keep some of those offshore winds blowing and also keep any
chance for fog/stratus to a minimum. Where clear skies do persist,
expect very cold overnight temperatures with interior areas
easily dropping to -20 F. The good news is that with abundant
sunshine during the day Saturday, this should allow for
temperatures to climb steadily back towards the low teens for many
of the population areas. The next chance for snow to return will
be late Sun into Mon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Friday
through Sunday)...

Mostly clear and cold conditions are expected across Southwest on
Friday due to a ridge over the eastern Bering. High clouds will
spread west to east throughout the day as a front moves slowly
toward the mainland. Easterly winds are expected to increase near
the Kusko Delta coast late Friday night prior to the front, which
may produce some areas of blowing snow. A Blizzard warning has
been issued for Nunivak Island and the Kuskokwim Delta Coast to
the north of Kipnuk on Saturday. Winds gusting to 45 mph combined
with snow will reduce visibility to one quarter mile at times.
Farther inland will likely see winds around 25 mph out of the east
with potential for visibility reduction to one half mile. Snow
totals of 2-4 inches are expected for the Y-K Delta.

The front is expected to reach Bristol Bay coast Saturday night,
pushing east into the interior on Sunday. A general 4 to 6 inches
of snow accumulation can be expected across northern Bristol Bay
and the Lower Kuskokwim. Winds shouldn't be an issue although some
isolated areas of blowing snow are possible. Southern Bristol Bay
should see less than 3 inches total snow accumulation to the
south of King Salmon due to downsloping, with areas south of Pilot
Point having some rain mixed in. Temperatures Saturday and Sunday
should be on the warmer side due to southerly warm air advection
along the front.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Friday through Sunday)...

An occluding storm force low moved north of Shemya this morning
with its front moving slowly east across the western Aleutians.
Winds are expected to decrease as the front moves east, arriving
at Dutch Harbor Saturday morning. Rain is expected along the front
due to the southerly push of warm air. Cold air behind the front
may produce a brief period of snow before the westerlies kick back
in, which will bring spotty, brief snow showers to the Aleutian
Chain and Pribilof Islands through Sunday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Bering: A low and front moves across the Northern Bering through
Tue. Model confidence is good. Widespread westerly small craft
winds and waves with areas of gale force winds become northerly
small craft winds with areas of gale force winds over the Eastern
Bering for Tue. Seas to 18 feet on the Pacific side, 15 feet on
the Bering side, subsiding Tue. A new low and front approach the
Western Aleutians and Bering for Tue.

Gulf: A low and front enter the Western Gulf Sun and move to the
Eastern Gulf for Tue. Model confidence is good. Widespread
southerly small craft winds and waves with areas of gale force
winds move with the front through Tue. The low tracks along the
North Gulf Coast, bringing barrier jet gale force winds through
the lower Cook Inlet and Barren Islands Sun into Mon, developing
into easterly storm force winds across the Gulf Coast Mon,
diminishing Tue. Seas with the front to 14 feet, subsiding late
Mon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through
Thursday)...

The long term forecast period will start off with a broad upper
level trough situated over the eastern Bering and Southwest
Alaska. An upper level ridge will be building in behind this over
the western Bering. The broad upper level trough will remain in
place though slowly being pushed southward into the North Pacific
moving into Wednesday as the upper level ridge tries to build in
across the Alaska Interior. As a result, the Monday and Tuesday
timeframe is expected to be quite active across Southcentral as
another potential low moves into Prince William Sound bringing
another round of snow to some of the same areas that were hit with
this last event. Depending on the exact placement of the upper
level low over the North Pacific and the strength of the upper
level ridge over the Mainland will determine how far north any
storm system gets Wednesday and Thursday. As of now much of the
activity is expected to remain over the Gulf and potentially for
Kodiak Island while Southcentral remains dry. Overall, expect the
continued below temperatures through the period though warming a
little bit day by day closer to near average by Thursday. Continue
checking back for the latest forecast updates as any shift in the
placement of these upper level features will dictate what happens
at the surface.
