We're starting out the mid afternoon hours with the only clearing
being across the western half of SD. Otherwise, we're still being
impacted by the deep low to our northeast, not only with abundant
cloud cover but with breezy winds that have only started to relax
this afternoon. The current weather map shows the stacked 500mb-
surface low stretching from northern WI and Upper MI through eastern
Ontario. A small ridge was along the ND/MT border and into far
western SD. Quick north to northwesterly flow continues overhead at
500mb.
Expect the surface high to move across central SD by 03-06Z
Saturday, allowing winds to relax significantly to less than 10kts
across the forecast area, before switching out of the south as
the ridge exits into MN late Saturday morning. Have issued a High
Wind Watch for Corson and Dewey counties of north central SD,
where I'm more confident that conditions will occur. Will see if
the stronger winds will be able to spread farther east or not.
There are a few solutions, like the FV3, ARW, and ECAM that do
have 40mph winds moving as far east as Brown and Spink Counties
between 00Z and 03Z Sunday.
Otherwise the other concern will be light precipitation as the low
tracks to near the northeastern SD/MN border by 00Z Sunday. A light
wintry mix of precipitation will be possible over north central SD
Saturday morning, and over northeastern SD Saturday afternoon,
before changing back to all snow and ending Saturday night. Little
to no accumulation is expected, with the potential to around an inch
or less of snow over portions of west central Minnesota. Winds to
slowly diminish overnight and any lingering precipitation to come to
an end over northeastern SD/western MN.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

When the extended forecast period opens Sunday morning, surface high
pressure is working, generally, east across the region, with a
return flow southerly component pressure gradient setting up Sunday
night. At this point, despite there being a couple of short/long-
wave trofs working through the region between Sunday and Friday of
next week, the forecast is basically a dry forecast, except for a
chance for light precipitation (waa-force) Sunday night into Monday
morning.
Ensemble and deterministic model solutions still compliment each
other nicely regarding temperatures in the out periods. Readings
near to below normal on Sunday will rebound within the Sunday
night/Monday waa sequence to above normal. Above normal temperatures
are expected to stick around into Tuesday before the next noteworthy
cold frontal passage sweeps through the region, turning temperatures
back down to below normal for pretty much the rest of the 7-day
forecast.
